Joren reaches the edge to see a soaked, half-drowned cultist (3) trying with little luck to scale the ledge and get back up onto dry land. Even through the narrow eye slits in the mask, Joren's acute vision in the dark allows him to make out the cultist's eyes going wide with surprise as his undead comrade careens down at him, knocking him back into the lake.
Meanwhile, Marion sees the lightning coming her way and has just enough time to stab her sword into the ground between her and the rail, acting as a grounding rod. The heated hilt of her blade still burns her hand, but she avoids the worst of the damage (10 lightning damage). No longer able to bring her sword to bear on the cultist, however, Marion turns her head to look at her and shouts, "You've chosen the wrong God to follow, but it's not too late. Surrender!"
Her last word is laced with a powerful compulsion. The cultist's knees buckle reflexively as she is nearly forced to kneel, but her resolve holds firm. Instead, she pulls out a second dagger and flicks it behind her, dashing Joren's echo into pieces before trying once more to get her blade past Marion's armour, but Marion is ready with shield in hand long before the dagger can find its mark.
Vilus: "How long 'til the ships arrive Andra? what ritualistic bullshit you got going on around here? what's the plan? huh?" The goliath barks out as he fires off a bolt from his crossbow at the man.
Andra, his attention now on Vilus and Samir, begins walking forward. He tilts his head to the right as one bolt sails past. "I estimate between 25 and 27 days, weather permitting." His head leans the other way as Samir's bolt whistles through the air next to his ear. "There are no rituals involved in the next part of our plan. Just digging until we find what we need to cleanse this land with fire. My turn."
He drops his dagger and snaps his fingers. Instantaneously, half of his dress coat melts into wisps of shadow, leaving just a tattered black cape. And underneath, gleaming platemail adorns a tall muscular body with broad shoulders that contrast impossibly with the narrow figure he cut while wearing the magical coat-turned-cape. "Three Answers, three questions. Is the one who is called Jon dead? Are there more of you? Did you break the seal on the Hydaelym?" He reaches over his shoulder and grabs a hilt that almost hadn't been there before his transformation, and pulls forth a greatsword to rival Joren's in size. He suddenly lunges forward, slashing at Samir's back as he passes. (16 to Hit. 14 Non-magic Slashing damage)
Joren whips his head around at Andra's advance. Unlike the others, he has nothing to say any more, just the boiling rage inside him.
He advances mostly west (1 square NW and 5 W) past Ashley. As a bonus action, he re-summons his echo 15' to the west and sends it 15' further, directly blocking Andra's advance, flanking with Samir. Attempting to distract Andra's attention from the artificer, he attacks from the echo's position.
Jorengreatsword attack with advantage from flanking: 14 Joren [item[greatsword[/item] damage (won't matter as 14 almost certainly misses): 9 (Some terrible rolls to make up for the critical success on Athletics last time). (All of Joren's attacks on cultists will be non-lethal unless otherwise described).
Ashley smiles as Andra gets closer to her. A devilish smile that lights up her countenance in a different way than her friends typically see. She walks towards him until she is within 30 feet of the man and lifts her arms, hands clasped together as she stares at her foe. Lanya, the only thing on her mind. She vaguely knows that Vilus is questioning this awful man, but it doesn't truly register with her.
After Joren attempts to hit the man, Ashley starts talking, and spreading her arms wide as she casts suggestion... "Andra, bring Lanya to me."
Once the spell has been accepted, she watches him closely, and says to the rest of her friends, "Do not touch him or the spell will break. You can have him once Lanya is safe."
Andra brings his sword up swiftly, blocking a strike from the echo, and then sneers at Ashley as she speaks to him. But as she completes her command, his eyes go wide with surprise, and then settle into a blank, half-lidded expression as he lowers his sword tip.
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
Samir gasps as Andra's blade cuts into him, his hand instinctively gonig to the painful wound. He turns and stumbles backwards away from the now far more imposing figure, even as a flicker of light plays over the few bits of armor that can be seen beneath his coat. Small sigils, almost invisible before, glow briefly as they feed regenerative energies into the artificer's body, partially healing his wounds. Both wanting to put distance between himself and Andra as well as get closer to Lanya, Samir pushes himself further towards the point where he last saw the Marshall.
Full move further towards Lanya, casting Cure wounds on myself.
Vilus knows that the man speaks with the confidence of a man who knows he will be victorious in this fight and as such he us not guarding any secrets or speaking any lies. With Andra now under Ashley's spell, Vilus pauses for a moment with his questioning.
Instead choosing to approach the man, one finger pointing out Vilus says clearly "ceaseless Watcher, turn your gaze upon this wretched soul, look deep and reveal his truths to me" with that Vilus casts True Strike, gaining insight into the mans weaknesses.
Through his battle rage, Joren is a bit startled at this new side of Ashley.
If the fire genasi's Suggestion continues to appear successful and Andra moves to rescue Marshal Lanya, Joren's echo will forgo the opportunity attack. If however, Andra moves in a different, hostile direction, Joren's echo takes the opportunity attack, with his Sentinel ability in play.
I wonder if Andra will even stay afloat in that plate armor...
Malachi struggles against the cultist in vain until Joren arrives and pulls the undead creature off of him. Freed at last, Malachi gasps and gives Joren a weak thanks as the warrior tosses the cultist over the edge. Sparing a quick look back at Marion to make sure she had the other cultist occupied, Malachi moves forward toward Andra.
He pulls up suddenly, eyes wide, between Ashley and Vilus as the fire genasi’s spell takes hold. “Well done” he whispers to Ashley as he watches Andra closely to see if he moves to rescue the Marshal. He turns slightly to Vilus “What is he babbling about? What is a Hydaelym?"
In response to the cultist's attack, Marion smashes her in the face with the pommel of her sword (6 damage)
The cultist reels back from the blow, but then hears Ashley's commanding voice. Turning around, she sees Andra under Ashley's influence and immediately pulls out a second dagger. With no regard for her own safety, she runs from Marion, who swings at her again. But Marion's sword clatters against the stone wall, numbing her fingers and sending the sword flying from her grip. "Ashley, look out!"she shouts, as the cultust leaps through the flames on the tracks and flings both daggers at the Genasi.
The first dagger strikes true (6 damage and a DC10 Con save to maintain concentration on suggestion), but the second throw goes wide and leaves the cultist looking out of breath (critical miss, has 1 level of exhaustion).
Gritting through the pain of the dagger, Ashley keeps her mind focused the biggest threat. Andra.
He bends over and retrieves a length of rope from a nearby miner's corpse, walks over the the edge where Lanya fell, and begins tying the rope onto a rocky outcropping.
Joren feels a surge of grim pride at Ashley's mental domination of Andra to help save Marshal Lanya. That's the brave, resourceful lass I know!
He notices the cultist who threw the daggers looking winded and decides to remove her from the battlefield if he can.
"Malachi, please help me in heaving this last cultist over the side so she is making less of a nuisance of herself!"
He moves to Cultist 1, attempts to grapple her and drag her to the cliff and drop her over into the water on top of the other two.
Contested Athletics: 16 if no help or 23 if advantage through help. (Cultist 1's check should be at disadvantage due to 1 level of exhaustion.)
With his bonus action, Joren re-summons his echo, letting the old one dissipate. He moves it into the midst of the three cultists (if above grapple is successful, otherwise just two). Just above them, hovering a couple feet over them with a greatsword, attempting to hinder movement or projectiles.
Malachi looks back at Marion’s shout and flinches as a dagger flies by on its way toward Ashley. Sparing a quick look to make sure she is okay, he follows Joren’s guidance and moves to help him subdue the cultist. Going low while Joren goes high, he grabs her legs and drags her to the edge. “Over you go!”
The cultist turns to face Joren just in time to catch his burly shoulder to her stomach. A gasp of air escapes her already winded body, and she has neither the time nor presence to resist as she is unceremoniously dumped over the edge, landing with a splash amongst the other two.
Watching Andra carefully as them an works ostensibly under the command of Ashley's magic, Samir backs away towards the others a few steps. Seeing the small group of cultists that have been hurled over into the water by Joren, the artificer reaches into his bag and pulls out a small metal and glass sphere. He glances at Andra quickly, weighing the item in his hand, then turns and hurls it at the edge of the cliff above the cultists. The container shatters, spilling out a thin sheen of slippery substance around the lip of the cliff. Hopefully, it would help keep the cultists from climbing back up and renewing the fight.
Move back ten feet, cast Grease at the top of the cliff just above the cultists.
Ashley breathes a small sigh of relief as she watches Andra work on her suggestion of bringing Lanya to her. Hurting as she was, and unsure of Lanya's current condition, Ashley moves 15 feet towards Lanya and casts healing word, twinning it so that both Lanya and she receives 7 hp of healing.
Letting out a frustrated growl and letting go of the insight into Andra's defences, Vilus dashes forwards until he is right next to his quarry. "Jon is dead, exploded. There are legions more of us working from the shadows, and I've no idea what a hymadelm is but your secret office went up in smoke too! what are you digging for? and what do you gain from cleansing the land? huh?" Vilus says to the man through gritted teeth, the goliath is careful not to touch the man, not yet, also watching closely for any hint of the man breaking the spell that compels him to carry out the task laid out for him by Ashley.
Marion stands up and retrieves her sword from where it fell, making her way over to the others, but not crossing the tracks yet.
Beneath Joren's echo, the two cultists desperately try to scramble out of the water over the grease-slicked wall, but the impossible task is made harder by the gohstly sword that swipes at any fingers that reach too high. Meanwhile, the dead cultist flails dumbly as it sinks out of view. It is soon only marked by the occasional surfacing chunk of still decomposing flesh along with some dead fish.
Andra finishes tying off and then begins descending down the steep bank into the lake below, holding the rope for support. "Noted. I seem to have underestimated your lot, and if there are more of you as you say, then I suppose we must be diligent in putting said shadows to the blade. When Razmus comes, none will hide from his sight. It is a shame about the office though. That's a lot of work and notes lost, but I was ready to leave it behind anyway, I suppose." He gets to water level to where Lanya can be seen struggling to keep afloat using only her legs as those strange fish begin to investigate the expanding cloud of blood around her.
He grabs the back of her uniform in one hand and hoists her out, tucking her easily under one arm. He starts pulling himself back up with the other hand as he continues to speak. His placid monotone of before slowly reveals a simmering anger underneath as he approaches the completion of Ashley's instructions.
"As for what we are digging for, there is supposedly an artifact left behind by a primordial civilization deep under the ground. An artifact whose destruction would see this whole country wiped clean. Removed from the map in a flash of fire and ash, leaving behind the perfect staging ground for our true invasion." Andra pushes himself up over the ledge and tosses Lanya unceremoniously at Ashley's feet.
Lanya's eyes are rolling dangerously as her body is wracked in convulsions. She gurgles and sputters, trying to get the water out of her lungs, but she cannot draw breath.
"Two more questions," Andra says, readying his sword once more. "First, how many in Talmouth must we put down? And second, which do you serve? The coward, or the kinslayer"
As soon as Lanya is on dry land Vilus takes a step behind Andra and attempts to lock the man's arms behind his back with his own, twisting around so that Andra is pinned between Vilus and the rest of the group, (grapple 13 athletics) "the number in Talmouth is in the hundreds, I've no idea what the coward or kinslayer are, but I serve my own interest.
What is the primordial civilisation called? And what is the artifact?...
Someone drag her away from him now, she's still drowning!" Every word from Vilus' mouth seems to be a bark laced with hate and venom, even whilst he's asking the group to help Lanya.
As soon as Lanya is brought before her, Ashley pounces on the woman. As Vilas takes hold (hopefully) of Andra, and barks about getting the marshal away, Ashley starts dragging her towards Malachi and Joren, "Please, help me with her Malachi or Joren? She desperately needs help!"
