Vilus puts his hands up as the guards become hostile, as his human disguise is recognised and the weapons are lowered, Vilus gives a nod, "yeah, dead, killed by cultists... you all need to know what's going on. Me and my group have been tracking this cult from the shield pass to TenSmith to here, their ranks stretch the continent and they have placed themselves in positions of power. One of their leaders is councilwoman marigold, it appears that their grunts are made up of people who have been out to sea, beyond the horizon, those who came back changed. Their goal is to burn this continent to ash, by unleashing a godlike power called Rasmus. But to complete this task they must invade this city with the main body of their forces, they are currently out at sea, not far, and heading this way. Thaeir tactics are ancient and underhanded, using arcanum that I have never seen before, tattoos in a language of their god, they are not afraid to explode their dead as a last stand, to literally steal the faces of thier prey to infiltrate us.
My group and I will do what we can, we will have to break into their lair under the city and take out important people and important mechanisms for their invasion. You all need to collaborate, get reports from people your people on the docks, organise the forces you have at hand, get every able bodied citizen out there with whatever they can get their hands on. Once those boats reach our shores and this cult puts their plan into effect everyone you have ever known on this continent will die. STOP THEM." with that Vilus opens the door back up to Jean Lou's office and beckons the group of councillors inside.
"You know this lunatic, Councilor Hargrave?" One of the female councilors says to the one who spoke to Vilus.
"Not exactly," Hargrave says. "But what he speaks of is not new to me. Councilor Jean-Lou brought this cult conspiracy to me, and I appointed him a small task force so he could dig up proof."
"Without going through the proper channels? This is unlike you, Councilor Hargrave," another shouts.
"Jean-Lou is-was my friend, and not someone who would go accusing a fellow councilor without cause. I made a judgement, and I am prepared to accept accountability for the outcome. Come, let us..."
When the door opens, several councilors gasp or cover their mouths at the sight of Jean-Lou lying dead. Joren stands with the sword in hand, but hardly anyone takes note. Hargrave pales, but steels himself and walks up to Jean-Lou's body while the guards go around checking the bodies of the dead cultists. Hargrave bows is head in silent prayer much as Joren had done just moments earlier. Then he stands and walks to the desk. He shifts some papers aside and holds up folder. He carefully empties the contents and skims the first page that comes out. He sighs and runs a hand down his face. "He was here compiling his report and waiting to meet with me when he was attacked. If the bodies in his office aren't evidence enough for you, perhaps his final actions in life will convince you." Hargrave tosses the folder at the feet of the other councilors. "Cryptic runes, bloodstains, and and what appears to be a discarded human face...."
Joren voice is deathly quiet, but carries in the room. He remains kneeling, head bowed.
"Courage and honor, Councilor Jean-Lou was having in abundance. Resting upon us now, the duty to match him. Dispatching six of the nine face-transplanted cultist assassins sent after him, and injuring another so that Vilus and I could finish them off when we were arriving. My countryman, he was. Showing me this greatsword which belonged to my father, his friend."
Joren looks up, nodding briefly at Vilus, then at Councilor Hargrave who he does not know, standing and facing the other councilors. Wondering if they remember his warnings about Marigold and the cultists from the arena floor "I am taking my father's sword now to finish what Jean-Lou started."
It is a statement, not a request. He holds the flat of the blade horizontally across his body, resting upon the palms of both hands so everyone can see it.
"My friend Vilus is correct. We must be acting now. Reaching out to Marshal Lanya and Mayor Berg in Tensmith too, if able. Tensmith where Councilor Andra, another cultist leader, was working to keep mining operations shut down, stealing Tensmith's mining equipment, building tunnels between here, Tensmith and an inn near the Shield Pass, uncovering monsters and fire in the depths. All of Cambria must be defending herself before it is too late."
Malachi bursts into the councilor’s chambers ahead of the others, breathing heavily from exertion as they raced back. “The docks”he shouted “They are ablaze, set on fire by the cultists. Two ships stand in the harbor, we think Marigold is on one of them.”He stops as he takes in the presence of the other Councilors in the room and the carnage from the attack on Jean-Lou. Gathering his composure he continues, directing his remarks to the councilors “You need to muster forces to the docks, help control the fires and get your people to safety. We did what we could, as little as that was.” He nods to Joren and Vilus “Good to see you two are okay, I wish we could have arrived in time to help Jean-Lou.”
Samir huffs up behind Malachi, catching himself on the frame of the door. His head droops at first as he catches his breath, before looking up and catching his first real view of the interior of the office. Behind his spectacles, Samir's eyes widen and dismay is writ clear on his face.
Ashley follows close on Malachi's heels. Taking in the scene before her, her knees buckle and she has to grab hold of Malachi before she hits the ground. She frantically searches for Joren and Vilus and once they are spotted she breathes a small sigh of relief.
Looking to the council members, she adds, "Yes! What my friends say is true! And, and we need to get to the mines. I'm assuming there are mines here as well? We need to see them, we need to see what Marigold or others might be doing underground right under our noses."
"leave them" Vilus asks of the group curtly, motioning to the councilmembers, "they have faced the truth of the situation and will do what they must. Come on we need to get into the sewers and disrupt the cultists plans as much as possible... Joren are you prepared?"
With a short sharp nod to Joren, Vilus begins to walk out, exiting the chambers and heading out of the building.
"Wait," Hargrave calls out to Vilus as he turns to leave. "We need more information. Let's take a moment to discuss and coordinate a plan..."
Marion looks at Ashley and then cuts the man off. "No, we have lost too much time as it is. My friend here has warned us of a potentially imminent threat. I know there's a lot going on, but to delay now could prove disastrous." She turns to the rest of the group. "Maybe I should stay back and help the council coordinate a response. If we can get the situation in the city sorted out, perhaps reinforcements could be provided?" She addresses the question to Hargrave, who looks to the other councilors before nodding.
Ashley gives Marion and Vilus a look of deep gratitude when they take her ramblings seriously. She doesn't even know why she feels so strongly about going into the tunnels. She knew how great it felt to get out of them and she never wanted to return and yet here she was.
She gives Marion a quick hug, gives Jean-Lou once last quiet look, then heads towards the door, "Vilus, lead the way!"
“Thank you, Marion. You will be missed, but reinforcements in the sewers would be greatly appreciated.” He clasps her arm in farewell before turning and following the others.
Malachi looks toward Ashley “There is no guarantee that the sewers connect to the tunnel system, but it is the first place to look for answers. Why are the tunnels so important to you anyway? I would think we spent enough time in them under Tensmith.” Malachi gives an involuntary shudder as he remembers their last trip in the tunnels.
Malachi hurries to catch up. “Vilus, wait we are coming. What did you find in sewers when you escaped, what can we expect?”
"it's like a maze down there, the tunnels were over the sewers, myself and another escaped into the sewers by jumping into a cistern below the tunnels and out into the city... It may have just been that one part, but after tailing steadwell, or whatever that guy was called, the other day, I'm pretty sure we can figure it out. Expect patrols, though I'm not sure if things have changed since the invasion began proper." Vilus stops in his exit and turns to give Marion a nod, "give them hell, I hope your blue lady protects and guides you..." He telepathically conveys.
Joren relaxes a bit as his friends make an entrance, though his face remains grim. Not to mention covered in blood, most of it his own.
He lets the others take the lead in the continuing discussion with the councilors, making eye contact in particular with Ashley, then Samir. Listening intently to the genasi's urgency and the sympathetic with the half-orc's dismay at the bloodbath.
Once, such carnage would be shocking me too. Perhaps it should still... but we cannot be waiting.Underground it is, then.
To the councilors, he adds: "If you are having any ballistae or mangonels and other such long range artillery, and they have not been pre-emptively destroyed, booby-trapped or coopted by the cultists, now is the time to be bringing them to bear from fortified positions on the the cultist-controlled vessels standing out in the harbor. The more we can be disrupting their plans, the better."
Joren hefts his father's greatsword and gives Marion a gruff but heartfelt arm clasp as he follows the others out.
Samir gives Marion a last look before following the others, his throat tight and clenched around the rising of his own nausea. A deep ache has settled into his chest, and it is all he can do to contain the dread and repugnance that fills him at the sight of the slaughter. Swallowing hard, he attempts to pull himself more upright and follows after his friends.
“Stenwick. He was the one called Stenwick.” Malachi responds to Vilus. He was not likely to forget the man’s name or face after the uncomfortable meeting at the inn. “But who knows whether or not that was his real name or face with what has been going on.” He looks over at Joren “How are you doing? Jean-Lou was a good man. He trusted in us when others would not.”
Though clearly feeling better to be reunited with his companions, Joren does not crack a smile. He takes a last somber look back at aftermath of Jean-Lou's last stand and turns grimly to answer Malachi's query.
"The goliaths of the Dalmodh Plains have ever stood true as we Khirians defended our homeland, even when their northern Khorinian brethren were attacking across the Veil Mountains. I can only be hoping to be as steadfast as Jean-Lou was in the face of impossible odds."
Joren is covered in wounds, and looks as if he has been in battle all day, which is not far from the truth, though he still has some fight left.
"In truth, I have been better. Yet now, I am having my father's blade." (It is not immediately apparent exactly what the significance of this is, though everyone can see that he now wields a second, larger and more finely-crafted greatsword, with his old one still stowed at his back).
"If Ashley is sensing that we are needed underground, I am trusting her. Lead on, Vilus. Don't want to keep the gloazworms waiting."
Ashley looks to Malachi as he questions her, and with a bit of despair in her voice, "I don't know! And no, I don't want to go down there, but it is giving me great pains in my head the longer we are not. At least I think? I hope! I mean, I hope by going down there the pains in my head will stop, though I don't know why I would even think that? I keep getting visions of a crack growing underground...deep underground. Maybe even below the terrible gloazworms?? How would I know this or see this? I just don't understand...and... Jean-Lou!" Her voice cracks at the end of her rambling and she barely manages to stop herself from losing it and releasing great sobs.
A tear falls down her face as she continues to follow Vilus, trying to push thoughts from her mind and just physically moving.. hoping that will calm the storm that is happening within her.
The usually crowded are far sparser during the trip to the sewer entrance. It only takes another five minutes to reach the entrance that Vilus had noted. He leads the group to the spot Stenwick had unknowingly revealed to him, and there he finds a dark opening in the ceiling. Peering innto the gloom, Vilus makes out a trapdoor above him.
"well looks like we're here, anyone got any last prep before we head in?" Vilus whispers, one hand on the trapdoor looking and feeling around for any gaps or perhaps a key hole.
Joren appears preoccupied, gripping and re-gripping Jean-Lou'sgreatsword, larger and better-made than his old one, whose pommel now peeks out from behind his shoulder. Mumbling to himself as if he is trying to understand the blade. His summoned echo flickers.
He shakes his head at Vilus' query, ready to follow along, then as if remembering something while distracted, tells the others: "I was telling Vilus - I am having one Potion of Healing in my pack. If I am recalling, some of you also have such potions from the herbalists' shop. I will be trying to stave off any attacks with my echo, but if it comes to a fight, we may be needing these potions."
With that, Joren moves his echo to take a lead position along with Vilus, while Joren himself follows a few steps behind. Only then does it hit him. "Wait, Ashley. You are feeling pains in your head with these visions? Are you having such visions before? I wonder if it is having to do with this 'heart of fire' we heard the cultists may be seeking below the continent." He sounds undeterred, though concerned.
Malachi remembers something at Joren’s comment and checks the satchel slung across his body. “I have a potion as well, if it is needed.” He pats the hilts of the four daggers hidden across his body and then kisses a crystal hanging from a cord around his neck for luck before tucking it back into his shirt. “I am ready”he responds to Vilus.
He glances over as Joren discusses the heart of fire. “Do you have any idea what that is, Ashley? I wonder if it could be the column we saw in the tunnels, the one with the gloazworms and whatever they change into around it, I wonder what it does?”
