Joren gazes at Ashley for a long moment trying to make sense of what she is saying. Really what she's been saying all along since she started speaking of the heart of fire and the pain inside her. He finds he has no earthly idea what might be happening. But then, it doesn't really matter whether he understands. He has already made up his mind he is going to back Ashley on this.
Taking a brief moment to stretch and relax his muscles after his strenuous toil with Vilus setting the minecart back on the tracks, he gets in as well, summoning his echo in the process as a sentry ahead. He too waits for Samir, Vilus or perhaps Malachi to decipher the runes on the lever of the cart.
Giving his companions a boyish grin, he drawls with his deadpan gallows demeanor: "Next stop being gloazworm central?"
Samir represses a shudder as he bends to examine the runes etche on the minecart's lever, trying very hard not to let the imagery that Joren's words conjure up distract him. "I certainly hope not. I'd rather go back and chat with Andra some more than that."
Vilus hastily gets into the cart and crouches down putting a heavy hand on Ashley's shoulder, he sits her down in front of him and gets uncomfortably close to her face, "close your eyes Ashley, concentrate and trust me. I need you to focus and remember... This connection I have isn't the only one in this group, we are each of us tied to a power greater than ourselves and you've seen it. Remember the lady sat in front of the white flame, the one draped in the blue veil, she spoke to you, she gifted you a boon. You are connected to her, and you can speak to her again... It might not be speaking like I'm speaking to you now, and you won't get to choose what answers you receive. But you can focus on that connection, concentrate on what you feel now, the white flame calling out to you, extending you beyond yourself. Meditate on it... we'll handle the rest, just keep that connection and update us if we are headed the wrong way, or going too slow."
If Ashley lets him, Vilus gently touches their foreheads together and telepathically repeats the words she heard in her vision about a month ago in Andras office, "Your kind were among our first. And though the process used in your creation seems crude and unrefined now, I still take pride in you".
Malachi looks over the minecart, helping Samir with the runes “Very clever, not what I expected. It will be better than walking for certain” he nods to Vilus “Do you think it is as simple as pushing the lever forward to go and pulling back to stop?” He looks on at Ashley with concern as Vilus speaks with her, his thoughts going briefly back to his own vision before he pulls his focus back to the task at hand.
As Vilus speaks to Ashley, reminding her of her vision and repeating the Lady's words in her head, a collideascope of memories swirl through her head.
Ashley:
The white flame from the vision, the Heart of Flame, creation... She and the Heart are linked. It has to do with creation and destruction. She recalls the nightmares she'd had many nights ago after escaping from Jon Shep's machinations. The molten fire from below, obliterating all. Unmaking her. Give me an Intelligence check DC 15 with advantage to put more pieces together now rather than later.
Looking at the lever, Samir quickly surmises that it is only slightly more complex than Malachi had put it. It looks like the runes on the lever interact with runes he discovers on the wheels, and with 4 total positions the lever can be set to. Essentially, it should allow them to set their speed and then magically power the wheels. Hopefully, it allows for faster speeds than would be possible by mundane methods. (Samir, Malachi, and Vilus can each give me an investigation check DC 18 regarding this magical apparatus to reach an additional conclusion)
Vilus looks at the runes and thinks back to the various applications he's seen of the magics that Razmus' followers have displayed. And then he considers his time imprisoned. How they were harvesting magic from people and collecting it. Andra had taken some of that essence to craft a new script... If Razmus' followers couldn't harness magic directly, and had to steal it from others, it seems reasonable that that magic would be finite. Hopefully there would be enough magic to get them to their destination, and quickly. But given the weakness of the magical aura it is giving off, Vilus is skeptical.
What he does know, is that if this cart obeys basic laws of physics, repeated acceleration and deceleration would expend far more energy then hitting a steady speed and coasting.
Vilus explains his assumptions and findings to the group, explaining that they will need to be conservative with their speed, "...though if it runs out and we get desperate I have a back up plan, as per usual it's risky and unpredictable, but it might work." he raises an eyebrow at Samir and then pulls a secondary vial of concentrated magic from his own pack, a different one from the vial he gave to Samir for experimentation.
Ashley obeys Vilus and kneels, closing her eyes. She listens intently to her friends words, recalling the dreamlike state in which she somehow met the lady in the blue veil. She lets her mind drift there as the goliath speaks to her. She lets him touch his forehead to hers and gasps a bit as he talks into her mind, but she stays put regardless. Letting her words resonate in her mind.
She whispers without closing her eyes, "We need to move, I am afraid of the last explosion... what will happen to this world if it goes off."
Samir's study of the runes etched on the cart doesn't take overly long, given the simplicity of the design and purpose. Finally he straightens, dusting off his hands. His eyes go to the vial in Vilus' hand, his own eyebrow raising in turn. "Perhaps... let's keep that idea as an emergency, last-ditch effort when possibly hurling ourselves off of the rails and into a nigh-bottomless chasm seems like a worthwhile risk. For now, I believe we should be able to get this thing moving and keep it at a moderate pace for some time. That should allow us to save it's... fuel... and result in an altogether shorter trip than trying to get as much speed as possible right out of the gate."
“Well, what are we waiting on? Let’s get started.”Malachi jumps in the mine cart and moves to one side, peering down the tunnel, trying to see if the path is clear. “Someone else should push that thing”he points down toward the handle “but I can try to help push anything out of our way.” He gallantly extends one hand to help Ashley, or anyone else, into the cart.
Joren keeps his echo active and moving in front of the mine cart as it begins rolling down the tracks. Attempting to "attack" minor debris or anything else movable from his echo's position ahead with his Dunamis Blade or handaxes to sweep it off the tracks and prevent it from becoming an obstacle.
With the whole group doing what they can it becomes easier for Vilus to manage the cart and avoid obstacles, he connects subconsciously with his patron and focusses his powers of observation.
Setting the cart to fast as they begin.
"I'm watching, but if there's something I miss shout it out" he asks of the group.
The cart sets off at a surprising speed. Even on just the second highest setting, it moves faster than a horse at a full out sprint. Joren monitors the path ahead with his echo, and the track is straight for the most part. Minutes go by uneventfully. The steady clack-clack of the wheels over the track is the only sound for a while. Then, Vilus' ears pick up on another sound. The high-pitched screeching of some kind of bat.
It sounds like there are many of them, and headed in their direction. Possibly drawn by the sound. But the band of adventurers has not been seen yet. There is time to react, and maybe an opportunity to avoid confrontation altogether.
Samir perks up at the sound of the bats, his attention drawn away from his study of the cart's mechanism even as it was in motion. He blinks round owlishly for a moment, though he sees nothing. "Bats... bats, bats... what do I know about bats...." His hands dive into his satchel bag, rooting around for a few moments before coming up with a small metal device formed of small gears and struts, formed into a sort of cube. He stares at the thing in the light of his still glowing Light spell before muttering to himself and setting his nimble fingers to adjusting pieces and rotating dials. "It worked once, maybe it's good for a second try on smoething other than wolves..."
Samir is preparing a Magical Tinkering to emit a burst of high pitched sound that he hopes will drive away the bats if they appear, much as he did way back when at the beginning of their journey.
Joren positions his echo ahead, hugging the wall just before a corner around which it sounds as if the bats are coming.
Hoping for a pre-emptive strike in case Samir's ingenious device (the likes of which Joren well remembers from just outside Tibben when a pack of wolves had posed a potential threat. Before the Shield Mountains... with long-remembered habit, he touches the pommel of his greatsword, or rather his Dunamis Blade, poking out from behind his back for luck. And then draws it, in readiness to attack from his echo's position.
The cart trundles on, and the sound of bats gets closer. They chitter and chatter, screeches bouncing off the cavern walls. Then Samir activates his device. The bats come into view at the same time, and as the high pitched whine hits them, they start to swerve and dive, careening into the walls, the ceiling, the floor, rendered effectively blind by the sonic interference with their echolocation. One of them thwacks blindly into Vilus at the front of the cart, who has a chance to see its large fangs before it is falling away from him.
After a moment, the bats are well behind them, picking themselves up off the ground and crawling around awkwardly on their wings while they try to regain their bearings.
A few more minutes go by before Ashley feels a powerful pressure blooming through her head like before. Four more. Though it still feels like their destination is far away. They may be about a 5th of the way there.
The natural cave continues, but it is no longer as straightforward as it had been. The track winds and weaves, but Vilus and Samir carefully manage their speed on the corners to lose as little time and momentum as possible. Then they spot a problem.
Standing in the middle of the track is hulking subterranean bear. It looks at the oncoming cart with milky eyes, frozen in indecision.
(With your current speed and Vilus' scores for driving, you have a surprise round where it is effectively at 60 ft, and then one more round of actions with it at 30 ft before you collide with it)
Stowing his Dunamis Blade stowed for the moment, Joren draws a handaxe in each hand and moves his echo forward. It had already been 30' ahead but he moves it further to close the distance with the large cave bear, attacking it twice non-lethally with the flats of his weapons.
He attacks it from the side, hoping that the beast will either chase the echo in rage or reel away from it in confusion, hopefully laterally off the track either way. The echo disappears at the end of his turn, but Joren hopes to gauge which side he should attack from next round.
Free Actions: Draw handaxes and position his echo (already 30' ahead), 30' further ahead to 60', to the left side of the bear.
Action: Joren attacks the bear's haunches non-lethally from his echo's position with the flat of his handaxe (light melee weapon) To Hit: 24 Damage: 6 (non-lethal)
Bonus Action: Joren attacks the bear non-lethally with his off-hand handaxe (light melee weapon) To Hit: 11 Damage: 5 (non-lethal, no STR mod added)
Vilus extends a steady hand and gathers his purple energy ready to fire off an eldritch blast toward the blind beast, when he is suddenly jostled hard enough to make him not only miss completely but fumble his pack, he scrambles to pick up dropped items in the cart and retain control of the speeding vessel too, momentarily losing any focus he previously had on the bear whatsoever.
As her head feels like it is going to explode again, she holds her head on both sides, pressing back against it in reaction, worry blossoming inside of her as they move. "This isn't fast enough!!" she screams out, she can't help it.
As Samir gets them past the bats, she allows herself to breathe a little easier, loving how brilliant her team is. If anyone could do this, it was them. She tried to hold on to that thought as she peered over the edge of the cart, the exhilaration of the ride thrumming through her body.
Then the bear. "Gaaah!!" emits from her mouth before she even realizes it. She sees Joren attempt to get it to move and she decides to use a bit more heat in attempting to get the bear's ass moving. Seeing the direction the bear's nose was pointed, she flicks her wrist, producing her lovely flame in the palm of her hand then throwing it towards the bear's rump, hoping to get it moving and fast. (19 attack, 8 dam)
Malachi, remembering well what Samir’s trinket did to the wolves on the far side of the Shield Pass, covered his ears and ducked to the side as Samir adjusted the knobs on his device. He had little time to congratulate the artificer though before Ashley’s shout of frustration and then the sighting of the bear. “No time or energy to waste slowing down. We must clear the beast from the tracks.” He points his ram’s head ring at the bear and sends a blast of force at it, pushing it back.
As the cart gets closer, he sends a spike of psychic energy into the bear’s mind and follows it with a telekinetic shove, trying to push the bear off of the tracks.
Summary:
Surprise round (60 feet): Action: Ring of the Rams head attack: 26 Damage: Unable to parse dice roll.. On a hit the bear is pushed 5 feet away.
Next round (30 feet): Action: cast Mind Sliver INT 14 save or 2 psychic damage and subtract 3 from next saving throw. Bonus action telekinetic shove, STR 14 save or be pushed five feet away.
