From long training, Joren reacts as the zombie (ZO6) not ignited by Samir charges out of the hatch at Vilus, attacking opportunistically from his echo's position by the hatch. Hooking the Dunamis Blade behind the zombie's knees to lock it in place and prevent it from reaching anyone other than the echo.
Joren's Attack of Opportunity on ZO6's turn from echo's position: Dunamis Blade to hit: 21 Dunamis Blade damage: 9 magical slashing Sentinel Feat: on a successful attack of opportunity, the target's movement is reduced to zero.
Joren finds himself more surprised than he should be about the zombies coming up from the destroyed stern of the ship rather than the hatch. As he turns around, he is startled to see the creepily charmed cultist (C2) with the flame image reflected in his eye. What is Ashley doing to the man?
"As she was saying, then, helping me repel these undead," he commands the stranger before turning to his friends.
"With all these zombies, coming up and the ship sinking, I suggest returning to Chemain's ship and backing water. Perhaps thirty to sixty feet away in case a cultist corpse is exploding? I can be acting as rear guard, returning over the water using my echo when done."
With that, Joren advances to the edge of the ship's broken stern and begins his attack, once from his own position and twice from his echo's.
Movement: Joren moves adjacent to ZO6, attempting to interpose himself between it and his friends if he can. His echo also moves up.
Action: Using his Dunamis Blade, Joren attacks ZO6 from his own position, then from his echo's position, either ZO6 if it is still up, or if not, moving the echo down to attack one of the most injured of the remaining zombies that is attempting to clamber up to the main deck.
Dunamis Blade attack 1 from Joren's position on Z06: To hit: 12 Damage: 10 magical slashing
Dunamis Blade attack 2 from echo's position, either on ZO6 (if still up) or otherwise on most injured of other zombies attempting to clamber up from below: To hit: 17 Damage: 12 magical slashing
Bonus Action: (Dunamis Blade allows Joren to make a bonus action attack on a different enemy from his echo's position if he already attacked from his own position - he uses it to attack the most injured of the other zombies just below ZO6). To hit: 11 Damage: 12 magical slashing
Joren attempts to leave his echo in a position where the zombies would have to climb and run past it to get to him, incurring an opportunity attack.
One, Two Three, the blades slashes back and forth. Joren swings his arms twice, but his sword makes three deadly cuts. On the second swing, it seems to split in the air, marking two possible trajectories. Both are lethal.
The first takes two legs, and the second takes 2 heads. But the last of the three bodies to hit the ground continues to move, slowly drawing unnaturally back up to its feet and clambering once more at the edge. The cultist behind Joren moves forward beside him and plants a foot on the stump of the surviving zombie. He then shoves hard. It loses its grasp and falls back from the ledge, impaling itself on a jagged wooden board. (Dead)
One of the zombies below tries to make a grab for the cultist's foot, but he steps safely out of the way.
Ashley sees the hands of the zombies... so many that are clinging to the side of this ship. Marigold down below itches at her, but there isn't much she can do about that... and that is if the woman hasn't teleported out of there. Heading back down was a death trap. But those zombies, this would not do and she is hoping she can buy her team a little time.
Digging deep within herself, she focuses hard and converts all of her sorcery points to get back one 3rd level spell slot.
She grins.
Thrusting out her blaze tinder box gripped tightly in her hand she lets the fireball go. This one she feels burns hotter and brighter than any fireball she has ever released. She hopes it makes a difference and doesn't send them sinking either.
Focusing on the ball of flame to get the zombies and as little of the boat as possible, 36fire damage is delivered in this blow, DEX save of 15 for each zombie in this 20' radius sphere.
The flames instantly consume the press of zombifying bodies. As the morning sun rises higher, a sea breeze has started to blow through. It carries with it the ashes of most of Marigold's former crew, sprinkling Chemain's ship. Only one zombie (ZO10) remains, horribly charred. One leg is nothing but blackened bone.
Vilus seeing the majority of the zombies stop moving takes his chance and dashes toward the hatch that Ashley blocked from the outside, throwing the hatch open he has a straight shot to the door marigold disappeared through and if it is not locked he throws it open.
The zombie turns to watch Vilus go, but he is out of reach. He gets to the door, which swings open with a creak. Beyond he sees a small room with some spare rigging and another set of stairs leading the third deck. A soft glow is rising from below. He runs to the top of the stairs and pokes his head down to look into the space beyond. There in the center of the hold, he sees Marigold in the middle of an incantation. A circlet sits upon her brow, and a round silver brooch is pinned to the front of her councilor's robes. Upon her finger is a ring, much like Andra's.
Vilus feels a tension build in the air, and deep down he knows that in a matter of seconds, some manifestation of Razmus will be called forth unless the magic can be stopped or blocked.
Malachi turns his head and shields his eyes from the explosion of fire that Ashley’s spell unleashes, then looks in wonder at the charred and destroyed zombies. He turns to follow Ashley toward the other ship when Vilus surprises him by dashing deeper into the sinking ship. Malachi yells over to Chemain’s ship “Tell Marion to do whatever she is going to do now!”before hesitating slightly and following Vilus into the ship muttering under his breath the whole time. “I can’t believe I am doing this. I can’t believe I am doing this.”
He pulls up short behind Vilus as he sees Marigold in the room below. Trying to interrupt her spellcasting, Malachi sends a [Tooltip Not Found] of psychic energy into her mind and whispers to Vilus. "Do you know what you are doing? How do we stop her?"
(Marigold must make a DC15 INT save or take 13 psychic damage. On her turn she can only take one of a move, action or bonus action. Half damage and no other effects on a save.)
The tension in the air wavers, when Malachi strikes, though it quickly continues to build. But Marigold's concentration seems a bit more strained. A bead of sweat forms on her brow.
"I have no idea, but I am stopping her now, if it's the last thing I do..." Vilus mutters back at Mal through gritted teeth, not taking his eyes off marigold at all.
"What in all the hells are you doing?!" Samir, despite his better judgment, takes off after Vilus and the others, cursing under his breath in a decidedly un-scholarly manner and had any of the others heard it they may have wondered just how much time a young, curious Samir had spent watching the ships coming in at the river docks and the workers who bent their backs to unloading them. As it were, by the time he got to where he could see the object of Vilus purpose, the artificer was all but out of breath for cursing or much else for that matter.
Seeing the procession of people coming down the stairs on its flank, the last remaining zombie turns and shuffles after Samir at an alarming pace, but not fast enough on its nearly destroyed legs to catch up.
(Zombie took a dash action to follow Samir to the stairs to the hold)
Joren looks wryly at the charmed cultist (C2) as his companions all dash after Marigold, leaving the two of them behind.
"The good news," he growls to the bewitched cultist with his usual flat gallows humor, "being that whatever happens down there will probably kill us all before we can be drowning with the ship. For now, helping me out with the last zombie if I am not finishing it, yes?"
In truth, there had been no question in Joren's mind that he himself was going after Marigold once Ashley cleared most of the zombies. And his escape plan from whatever Marigold did with Razmus, or from the ship sinking, was going to be to echo-swap to the surface and then to Chemain's ship. Now, with his friends charging ahead (which is what he usually does), he racks his brain for how to keep them safe and finds he has no earthly idea.
As he moves to follow his friends, he yells back to Marion on Chemain's ship. "Thinking no time like the present, Marion! Now or never."
Joren advances 15', then re-summons his echo with his bonus action, 15' ahead of himself, then moves it 30' further ahead, attacking the last remaining zombie (ZO10) twice almost absent-mindedly as it passes by. Joren then continues 15' further so he is 60' from Marigold and the echo is 30' from her.
Action: Joren attacks ZO10 twice from his echo's position (as it passes by) with his Dunamis Blade. Attack 1: Dunamis Blade to hit: 26 Attack 1: Dunamis Blade damage: 15 magical slashing
The zombie falls into two pieces, split at the waist. Then, as the upper torso raises a hand to crawl forward, Joren's echo takes its head. The head starts to roll toward Joren, but the cultist steps in and kicks it away, but upon hearing Joren's grim joke, he pales. "I'm going to go ahead and get off, in that case and wait for Marigold to reappear!"
Seeing the rest start running back towards the trap door, Ashley does an about face and heads the same direction. She dashes to catch up with her friends.
Vilus has eyes only for stopping marigold, blindsided against any magic circles or what she is doing he walks forward "I've seen where this path leads, and we stopped your excursion to capture the heart of fire, your invasion is done... we are going to figure out what you really are" and Vilus shoves at her attempting to push her prone. (Athletics 11) Before stabbing out at her with a dagger. (13 or 16 to hit depending on if she is prone, 5 piercing damage) "Fight Me You *****!" He screams through gritted teeth, something of himself lost in the moment
Marigold is caught flat-footed, unable to pull her attention away from the demanding magic she is summoning. She goes down hard, and shrieks as Vilus's dagger slashes through her calf. A line of blood splatters against the wooden floor. The magical pressure in the air wavers. It doesn't weaken, but instead fluctuates, seemingly unstable. She rolls onto her back to face Vilus and the others.
"You ANIMALS!" she screams. "No, you INSECTS! You're no different than those oversized bugs in the caves. A nuisance, but one that the power of our lord Razmus will have no trouble stamping out with nary a thought!"
The ship is beginning to tilt backwards, and water seeps under the door behind Marigold. The hold is filled with the sound of groaning timbers. Marigold's eyes then go over Vilus' shoulder to lock onto Ashley coming down the stairs. She looks at the charred cloth on her arm and the burns underneath and then back at Ashley. "Hahaha..." she chuckles. "Idiots. You've brought victory once more into my grasp. She bears the heart of flame. I can feel it. Now she need simply die!"
She points at Ashley and shouts "Ignomos!" The circlet on her head glows red and fires out three scorching rays directed straight at Ashley
(18 to hit, 8 fire damage; 22 to hit, 11 fire damage; Nat 20 to hit, 14 fire damage)
Then she holds out arms with a look of rapture as the magical pressure builds. The air distorts beside her as shadows twist to form a black maw that surges toward her, preparing to carry her off for the cost of a finger like Andra before her. Vilus feels it coming right at them and fears he will lose more than a leg this time...
Then everything freezes. The shadow, the water, Marigold, everyone else in the hold... The moment lingers. A voice drifts through air, authoritative but soft. The voice of the BlueLady.
"Razmus,"her next words are firm, but almost apologetic. "You will not have this day."
A ripple passes through the air, originating from somewhere beyond the port side of the ship where Marion was conducting her ritual aboard Chemain's vessel. As the ripple slowly passes through, everyone feels a warmth fill them, though still nothing else moves. (Everyone regains one spell slot of their choice, and one hit die) Then it is gone and time returns with a crash.
The shadowy maw, halfway over Marigold and Vilus emits a high pitched scream somewhere between a boiling kettle and a hurricane before imploding in on itself. As it passes through Vilus, it seems to run off of him like cold oil. But Marigold isn't half so fortunate. The aspect of her God closes in on itself with a crunch, taking a good chunk of the left side of her body with it.
"AAAAAAGHGHHH!" She screams. Her arm and leg are gone, and the side of her face and ribs is a mangled bloody mess. She lies writhing on the ground. The boat lurches once more and continues to pitch and sink, the water now just a few feet from her. Thick rivulets of her blood flow down the wood and mix with the cold sea water.
"You ANIMALS!" she screams. "No, you INSECTS! You're no different than those oversized bugs in the caves. A nuisance, but one that the power of our lord Razmus will have no trouble stamping out with nary a thought!"
Joren's best guess is already that things are about to go sideways. His drawl in immediate response to Marigold's rant is deadpan.
"I mean, not wanting to make you lose your train of thought ma'am, but not for nothing, we're all animals, including yourself. Thinking those gloazworms, now, they're animals too, though could be monstrosities having more than six legs, so not being technically insec- NO!"
He cuts his laconic interjection off in surprise and anger as the flames from Marigold's circlet batter Ashley, though not surprisingly, harming the fire genasi less than most, as one would expect from flames burning anyone who is resistant to fire.
As Marion's invocation of the Blue Lady's presence counters Razmus' avatar, Joren strides grimly forward, his echo pacing him to reach Marigold.
Not caring that his target is missing body parts, he brings the flat of his Dunamis Blade down from his echo's position, unleashing the echo's incarnation.
"Bringing what's left of her with us, Vilus," Joren growls to his goliath friend. "Having to leave now, us, and dying being too easy a way out for her..."
Movement: Both Joren and echo advance towards Marigold 30', with the echo reaching her and Joren 30' behind.
Action: Joren attacks Marigold thrice (Unleash Incarnation) non-lethally from his echo's position with advantage from Faerie Fire and her being prone.
Vilus is now bloodied
