The man flies back over the rail into Joren's arms before the tall dwarf sets him back on his feet. "I owe you my life, Joren," he says, clapping Joren on the back before running back to the ropes.
The ship starts to turn, and the silks are adjusted to catch the wind at the new angle. The boat starts to navigate the emerging debris field with Haymitch at the wheel, steering around crates and barrels, along with splintered timbers and the occasional bloated corpse.
Vilus keeps an eye out for what he can do to help, losing his bulky tiefling form he lets the crew of the boat see who he really is as he rushes forward to help pull tension into one of the ropes to make it easier to tie off. squinting out at the debris he sees some of the floating bloated bodies and tries to determin how long these souls have been sunk for.
Malachi clings to the rigging along the main deck, keeping an eye out for debris and any sign of the creature he saw below the ship. He calls out obstacles in their path as the ship heads toward the shallows. “What’s bringing these wrecks up to the surface? Is it Deep Blue, or something else?”
Ashley fills with wonder as the wreck from below starts coming up. She heads to the side of the ship that is closest to it as the crew attempts to get out their ship out of the way. She watches with increased fascination and echoes Mal's curiosity as to what is making this happen.
The boat swerves to avoid obstacles, one hard turn after another, each costing the boat speed and time. Vilus goes unnoticed in the frantic but well-coordinated hustle of the crew. Then another thud strikes the bottom of the ship. The boat lurches to the side. A second impact strikes the opposite side of the boat, but it sounds different. This time, above the waterline, it makes a loud wet slapping sound. Everyone looking over the side sees the source.
A large, ink black tentacle, a goliath's arm span wide, is attached to the wooden planks of the hull just 2 feet below the railing. Then the black tentacle ripples with iridescent bands of colour radiating toward the tip rapidly. Suddenly the boat gives a small lurch downward, costing several sailors their footing.
(Everyone give a dex saving throw not to be knocked prone)
With most of the party and crew knocked off balance, the creature below sends more of its tentacles up, surrounding the ship. The wind continues to draw the ship forward, but with each tentacle that attaches to the side, it slows further and further. Soon, a total of four tentacles are attached.
Suddenly, another one lashes out from the depths, crashing through the railing on the side of the ship, and slithering towards Joren's leg in a attempt to grab him. Spined suction cups line the bottom of the tentacle. (15 to hit, 10 piercing damage and grappled if hit)
From the other side, another one whips toward Malachi (14 to hit, 13 piercing damage and grappled if hit)
"Sakra." Joren growls, cursing almost conversationally in his mother tongue. Knowing that if he was simply wearing his armor, the spined tentacle would not have found purchase around his leg and grappled him as it has. Instead, being unarmored, he finds himself bleeding and rooted in place.
Gritting his teeth, he moves his echo (already having been summoned) thirty feet adjacent to where the other tentacle has grappled Malachi. In the next moment, Joren appears there, swapping places with his echo, which floats free next to the tentacle that had grasped Joren.
From his new position, Joren draws his Dunamis Blade and attempts to hack repeatedly at the tentacle (2?) holding the half-elf. He had managed to keep his balance thus far after all the impacts to the ship, but the shifting deck makes his footwork more uncertain than it ordinarily is.
(No Action Required): Joren moves his echo thirty feet into position next to the tentacle (2?) grappling Malachi.
Bonus Action (and fifteen feet movement): Joren swaps places with his echo, freeing himself. The echo is immune to the grappled condition.
Action: Joren attacks tentatcle (2?) which has grappledMalachi with his Dunamis Blade from his own position. IF tentacle (2) is down, any subsequent attacks are from his echo's position against tentacle (4?) which had grappledJoren previously.
Attack 1 on tentacle (2?) to hit: 13 Attack 1 on tentacle (2?) damage: 13 magical slashing
Attack 2 on tentacle (2, or 4 if 2 is down) to hit: 14 Attack 2 on tentacle (2, or 4 if 2 is down) damage: 10 magical slashing
ASSUMING AND ONLY IF tentacle 2 still survives, Joren uses his Action Surge to attack it twice more.
Attack 3 on tentacle (2?) to hit: 17 Attack 3 on tentacle (2?) damage: 10 magical slashing
Attack 4 on tentacle (2, or 4 if 2 is down) to hit: 10 Attack 4 on tentacle (2, or 4 if 2 is down) damage: 13 magical slashing
"Keeping the ship moving, always moving," he shouts to the crew. "Not letting the beastie get a solid hold on us while my friends and I are battling it."
As the ship lurches and shudders, Samir is unceremoniously thrown from his feet to sprawl across the deck. His eyes widen as he watches from his back as tentacles, dripping with seawater, shoot up and over the railing. Cursing through his gritted teeth, Samir lunches to his feet and scrambles towards Malachi. Electrical energy snaps and arcs around his outstretched hand as he attempts to free his friend.
The skin is tough, and as Joren batters it, only one of his blows really feels like it connects. As electricity arcs from Samir's hand to the tentacle, the skin ripples with the involuntary seizing of muscle, though it manages to maintain its grip (resistance to lightning).
The tentacle then responds to the pain from the attacks by releasing its grip on Malachi, slinking back down into the depths. Suddenly, there is another lurch as the four tentacles attached to the ship give a might tug to the right. A few sailors on deck, stumble and lose their footing, sliding across the deck and tumbling over, though most who were holding on to a rope or railing have an easier time keeping put.
Legendary action: Shake (Dex save DC 16 [4 x # of attached tentacles]. On a fail, forced movement 5 feet to the left. On a 6 or lower, knocked prone again)
The tentacle erupting from the water catches Malachi by surprise and crushes down around him. He loses his grip on the rigging as he is squeezed and immobilized by the tentacle. Suckers tear against his flesh and he gasps for breath as the tentacle constricts. Thankfully, it shudders and releases him as both Joren and Samir strike against the beast. He places one hand on the railing, the second grabbing the crystal hanging from his necklace and wheezes “Thanks, that is Deep Blue, I assume.”
He steadies himself against the railing as the tentacles find purchase on the boat and shakes it vigorously. Malachi leans over the railing, clutching his crystal, and gazes into the water, finding the Kraken’s mind through the waves and attempting to slow the creature.
(DC15 Wisdom save or the creature is slowed. An affected target's speed is halved, it takes a -2 penalty to AC and Dexterity saving throws, and it can't use reactions. On its turn, it can use either an action or a bonus action, not both. Regardless of the creature's abilities or magic items, it can't make more than one melee or ranged attack during its turn.)
Vilus, once again finding himself with his face pressed against the deck of the ship has a time getting up as the fall had loosened his false leg, (bit of flavour for the nat 1) as the ship shakes one way suddenly he hops 5ft to the left trying to keep his balance, he stretches out a hand and casts two warbling purple bolts of eldritch energy at the tentacle north east of him (3) creeping up behind Ashley (eldritch blasts, 9 to hit, 7 force damage. 11 to hit, 4 force damage)
As chaos begins to break out he closes his eyes and breathes deep pushing his consciousness lower until he finds the tentacled beast below them and speaks into its mind...
Ashley lays on the deck of the ship a bit stunned and the view of the tentacles reaching over the rails and taking hold of Joren and Mal... she isn't ready for this. She raises to her knees, looking around for her friends, making sure they are all still on deck.
Seeing that they are, she hangs on to the railing as the creature shakes the ship, water flying everywhere. She tries to reach out with her free hand to catch any of the sailors sliding across the deck, to try and stop them if she can.
Pulling herself up, she leans over the railing, searching for the main part of the creature, hoping she is within 15' of it since it is below her. She brings forth a new spell, a bright spirit that comes forth and surrounds her. Starting by swirling around the fire genasi, appearing as fire dancing sprites, the translucent creatures spread out till they are 15' away from her. She includes all those on deck and within to be immune from her Spirit Guardians as they release radiant damage of 11, DC WIS save of 15 (half if saved)
Another tentacle breaches the surface before Malachi's eyes, larger than the others but what follows is the strange sight of the tentacle suddenly slowing down while the water bursting up around it continues to fall at a regular pace. The tentacle slowly draws itself up, looking like it is preparing to smash down across the ship, but not reaching its full height this round. Meanwhile, the tentacle that had released Malachi begins to writhe and gather before whipping out again attempting to grab one of Malachi's legs (27 to hit, 6 piercing damage, grappled [DC16] if hit)
Meanwhile, over on the other side of the ship, the sprites of flame dance around Ashley. Down along the side of the boat where one of the large barbed tentacles is hooked into the wood, several sprites coalesce, briefly forming the outline of a genasi warrior with a halberd in mid-swing. At the point of impact, the slimy skin of the kraken begins to bubble and blister like a bad sunburn. Ripples of purple spread outward along the tentacle, visual flashes of pain, and its grip loosens just a bit (Full damage, made Con save to keep its grip).
The kraken is affected by slow. Failed its save at the end of its turn. If Malachi doesn't lose concentration, it will only have one legendary action and one attack next round.
Ashley grins wildly as she watches her new sprites attack the tentacle alongside the ship. She stands tall afterwards and turns to assess what is going on on deck and sees Mal wrapped up again. Her grin fades quickly to a frown as her friend flails against the great creature.
Keeping her concentration on the sprites and not leaving her post hoping they will affect the beast even more, she flicks her wrist bringing forth her flame and flinging it at the tentacle holding Malachi. Attack: 20, Damage: 6.
Joren's head snaps around as the new, larger tentacle emerges from the sea, slowed but apparently ready to smash the ship to splinters. As the smaller tentacle strikes Malachi once more, it leaves itself open and Joren opportunistically slashes at it with his Dunamis Blade. Glancing back and forth between the tentacles, he holds ground next to the grappledhalf-elven sorcerer, moving his echo over the water behind the larger tentacle.
As Joren draws his Dunamis Blade against the tentacle grappling Malachi twice in an X-pattern, attempting to force it to release its hold, the echo floating over the water appears to go through the same motion as one of the attacks, targeting the larger tentacle that just emerged.
Reaction: On the creature's turn, Joren's makes a reaction attack (Sentinel feat) with his Dunamis Blade on the tentacle which attacks Malachi. Dunamis Blade reaction attack on tentacle attacking Malachi, to hit: 22 Dunamis Blade reaction attack on tentacle attacking Malachi, damage: 9 magical slashing
(Then on Joren's own turn, his reaction resets.)
Free Action: Joren moves his echo 30', positioning it behind (on the other side of) the larger tentacle if he can, so any movement by the larger tentacle towards the ship would trigger an opportunity attack from his echo's position (and if the opportunity attack hits, it would reduce movement to zero).
Action: Joren attacks the tentacle grappling Malachi twice with his Dunamis Blade.
Dunamis Blade attack 1 on tentacle grappling Malachi, to hit: 27 Dunamis Blade attack 1, on tentacle grappling Malachi, damage: 10 magical slashing
Dunamis Blade attack 2 on tentacle grappling Malachi, to hit: 11 Dunamis Blade attack 2, on tentacle grappling Malachi, damage: 10 magical slashing
Bonus Action: On his first attack, Joren's echo, adjacent to the larger tentacle, mirrors his motion, making the same attack.
Joren's mirrored attack from his echo's position with his Dunamis Blade on the larger tentacle, to hit (same attack roll as first attack above): 27 Joren's mirrored attack from his echo's position with his Dunamis Blade on the larger tentacle, damage: 13 magical slashing
Samir staggers as the ship lurches, barely managing to keep his feet under him. Movement from the side catches his attention, and his eyes watch as the largest tentacle yet climbs slowly upwards, stretching and unfurling in a bizarrely languid fashion. Seeing the creature's slowed movements as an opportunity, he flicks his wrist back, a flaming rune blossoming into momentary brilliance on the back of his hand as he does so. Reversing the motion, he launches a bolt of flame across the open distance between himself and the larger tentacle, hoping to scorch the great sea beast into deciding that this whole exercise wasn't worth the bother.
The skin of the anchoring tentacle next to Ashley smokes and sizzles. There is a high pitched keening sound from beneath the boat, and the water adopts a strange vibrational pattern with the ship at the center as the creature below screams in discomfort. The tentacle (3) releases its grip and retracts into the the depths, leaving the ship a bit better able to maneuver.
As Joren slashes out, he blinks. In the split second his eyes are closed, he views a glimpse of another world where he is in the same spot, slashing at a massive tentacle, but the ship isn't beneath him. It is off in the distance, halfway to the horizon. Joren is hovering as an echo, and below him in the churning water is that world's real Joren clamped in the beaked maw of the horrible monstrosity below. He feels a wrenching as that Joren prepares to echo swap, leaving him in the jaws...
Back in his own reality, Joren's blade hacks deeply into the tentacle holding Malachi, and he feels his echo doing the same. The tentacle releases Malachi once again, and seems disinclined to attack him again, turning its attention instead on Vilus for some reason.
Samir's fire bolt flings across the divide, carving a chunk of singed flesh out of the side of the tentacle. It flinches, both from his attack and from Joren's, the tremors travelling slowly up its length.
Upon seeing the damage, Samir feels a shudder of something dark. A moment of bloodlust? Anger? A desire to cause more damage? It passes.
In response to the onslaught, the kraken once again wrenches at the ship, but this time with less control. (Legendary action: Shake (Dex save DC 12 [4 x # of attached tentacles]. On a fail, forced movement 5 feet to the right. On a 2 or lower, knocked prone again))
Vilus manages to keep his balance this time, his stump slipping back into place withing th confines of the false leg (nat 20). But he isn't looking at the tentacles any more, he takes a knee, eyes closed concentrating on the connection he has gained.
"It's intelligent, it's targeting us specifically. The wreck was a trap, it's premeditated..." He shouts to the group through gritted teeth. In the mind of the tentacles beast below, vilus' attempts to persuade it away are going unheard, but the thing is intrigued by something beyond Vilus, beyond the connection, something that is watching. Vilus picks up on this interest and opens the floodgates hoping to give the animal some kind of feed back like Malachi once felt. (15 intimidation)
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
Malachi calls out in pain as the Kraken coils him in its grip once more. Ashen and bloody, he loses his grip on his magical connection to the beast. As Joren slices the tentacle and the creature releases him, he staggers away from the railing.
He looks over at Vilus “This creature is ancient, older than the world itself, but it appears to have just awakened. I’m not sure it knows what it is doing.” He focuses on the thick tentacle rising from the waves and taps into the energy of his new circlet, sending three scorching ray bolts at it.
The kraken starts to speed up again. The large tentacle off to the side reaches the apex of its climb, and prepares to smash down across the ship, which will no doubt do considerable structural damage. The sky above darkens with the gathering a of singular thundercloud up above. Then there is a flash, and a bolt of lightning cracks downward at Vilus (Dex save 16 or take 17 lightning damage. Half as much on a save)
