Released from the stone, Two casts one last hateful glance at Ashley before making off down the hill, limping considerably. He looks back over his shoulder to see the armoured figure of Marion watching him from the hill's crest. He continues retreating to a copse of trees where Marion sees a horse has been hitched, out of sight of the inn. Mounting it, Two heads for the west-bound road near by and takes off. Following him to the road, Marion is able to watch him leaving for a long ways before he finally disappears from view.
Content that this man has at the very least departed a reasonable distance up the road and is not an immediate threat, Marion backtracks to the copse of trees where he had hitched his horse to look for any sign of a camp or other setup where he may have been waiting.
Silas Makes eye contact with Ashley once the door is closed and Marion has returned, He keeps his voice low trying not to wake the survivors in the adjoining rooms "Ashley... If I had spoken out loud what I needed to tell him then he would be bound by oath to either kill you then and there or die trying. I don't doubt your capabilities at all and I'm glad you had my back there, but I also needed him to do something for me, so couldn't chance him dying here either." a moments pause as Silas looks from Ashley toward Marion and Malachi, giving a knowing glance at what he shared with them earlier, he takes a deep breath before continuing. "It was a precarious situation that I think I navigated okay, by all rights, nobody died and I've hopefully recruited help, If I'm to be taken seriously. The help might come with drawbacks further along the line, but this in no way means you'll be accomplice to anything untoward" he makes note to direct that statement to Marion, "...any of you can know my real name if you wish, but It doesn't change who I am, or where I've come from, Also saying it out loud especially in the city could be dangerous for any of you, which is why I've kept you all in the dark, I'm sorry, but I felt it necessary, especially with the nature of how we all met."
Silas takes a seat, physically lowering himself as to not impose in the conversation and therefore lowering his status in the social parameter, he stays quiet letting everyone present have the chance to say what they would like about the settling situation and the revelation that 'Silas' is not his real name.
Reaching the copse, Marion manages to find horse tracks that indicate that Two rode up the trail before seeing the inn, and then backtracked to the copse to keep his horse out of sight. From the grazing nearby, it seems that he hadn't set up camp or anything, and had only been in the area for a few hours. All in all it gives the impression of a man who likes as little to be known about him as possible, and who didn't have the time to stake out the area before hand.
Having learned what she could, Marion returns to the inn.
Joren stands up immediately when he hears the prolonged, loud but distant roar down the tunnel. He checks the cultist prisoners and the state of the cave-in blockage that he shored up but does not otherwise move from his station unless someone comes down from the Inn to relieve him. He tries to identify whether the noise sounded like a living being or like some natural phenomenon.
"Joren is watching the prisoners. He asked if someone could relieve him after a bit." Samir speaks quietly, not entirely certain what is happening up here, but knowing that whatever it is seems to involve Silas' distasteful connections. Which brings to mind once more the cold blooded killing of the former innkeeper, and the welter of thoughts that go with it.
He shakes his head and begins gathering food for himself and Joren. "I'm going to take this back down to him. I was able to circumvent the rune on one of the staples, by the way. Theoretically, I should be able to use the same techniques to circumvent other versions of these... symbols."
"I...I need to take a walk, Samir, may I join you? Also, should we see if there are others that will be able to keep watch so we can maybe get a rest? I know I really need one." She turns back to Silas and the others, "As for this situation, I.. I don't know. I know I'm just tired and sick of the secrecy. I'm glad to know we might have more allies in whatever fight we have coming, but I'm just a simple fire genasi from the Sands and well, I am feeling more than overwhelmed and I need a break." And with that she starts heading down to the cellar to see if anyone down there is up and willing to help relieve Joren from the lab area.
Silas remains seated and nods in quiet acceptance of Ashley's decision, he attempts a weak smile but quickly averts his eyes, looking to the floor pensive.
Eventually he turns to Marion and Malachi concern returning to him as he regards Malachi's state after the experiment.
Returning to the inn Marion stands quietly as she listens to Ashley and Silas, her discomfort at the nature of the conversation plain on her face. When Silas talks of complications in the future, and makes a point out of stating that they will not be accomplice to vague and likely unsavoury consequences her discomfort turns to open disapproval.
As Ashley departs Marion remains standing alongside Silas, her body language betraying a expectation as she looks towards the goliath. After a he sits down and begins to study Malachi once more she eventually runs out of patience, her tone of voice betraying her annoyance. "We should not need to ask. Such is the basis of trust."
Ashley and Samir head down to the cellar. One of the women who had been keeping watch with Rana lies still awake. Connecting eyes with Ashley's weary features, she says quietly, "Kairem tells me you've got some of Jon's allies locked up back at the lab. Want backup?" She rolls over and nudges the orc beside her with an indiscernible word. The orc begins to stand, shaking the shoulder of an elf on his other side, and the two of them rise and fall in behind Ashley and Samir as they make their way down the tunnel.
Unfamiliar as Joren is with the local fauna, he feels pretty certain that what he just heard was a distant cry of pain from some sort of large animal. Even without the cultists, it seems the natural cave is not entirely uninhabited. Nothing indicates to Joren that whatever it is draws closer, but the sound of its cry sends a shiver up his spine nevertheless.
Ashley looks at the woman gratefully and thanks her. As they walk down the tunnel, Ashley turns to Samir, "So you've figured out how to circumvent the rune on the staple? That was so quick! You're a genius!" Ashley beams at him with excitement, "So maybe we can make those people bombs inert at some point and hopefully help out Mal. Ugh, what a day, or night? I'm exhausted. I swear, will I ever not be??" her excitement is quick lived as they move on and the weight of the past day wears on her. She hopes she can sleep soon.
"I trust..." Silas begins, as he turns in his chair to address Marion "...that you'll not use the name in situations where you'd be endangering myself and others by using it, and I trust that you'll be capable of dealing with any issues that arise from it should I not be able to deal with them myself. You've both learned a little of where I've come from and the abnormal situation in which I was raised, so trust isn't an intrinsic part of me, It's something I have to learn to use better, even so... after these short days, I trust you guys." he reaches out a hand in formal greeting. "Marion, Malachi, I'm Vilus, I'm also "The Eye"... Pleased to meet you."
Malachi follows the others into the tavern and collapses into a chair. He does take time to devour some of the food and drink while the others talk, so distracted that he doesn’t even realize Samir discovered a technique to disrupt the rune markings. A fact that he would have otherwise been very interested in. After Samir and Ashley left to return to the caves below, he began to pay a little more attention to the conversation around him. He took the revelation that Silas is not, in fact, the goliath's name in stride. He had a few other names of his own if needed.
“Vilus, never fear, I will be discreet with your name. The Eye, uh? This is a reference to your ability with visions? Do you get those often? The red, the blue, the yellow, does that mean anything to you?”
Malachi looks at Marion “I assume the blue references the Azure Queen. Have you heard any references to the others in your knightly studies?”He pauses “I am spent. We must bring the others up to speed and determine our next steps, but I need rest.”
Joren summons his echo and sends it to stand next to the cave in which he has shored up. He himself stands 30' back, keeping eye on the cultist prisoners, but also keeping an ear open for anything coming through the cave in.
If that was indeed a large creature in pain, then more enemies coming there may be. As we were knowing there were. Who else would Daniel have been sending his rat to warn? Attacking or enslaving whatever made that noise, most likely. Once we rest, if we can rest, we must pursue. Surprising them. We keep just reacting to these cultists. We should be taking the fight to them. Yet we are stuck guarding these three, unless Samir can defuse the explosive death runes as well.
Joren was never an expert at complex tactics, but he feels he knows the danger of letting the enemy dictate the timing and pace of battle. He slowly moves through drills with his greatsword, watching and listening. Once the others arrive, he tells them what he heard.
Following the roar, Joren hears no more sounds for the next while, until footsteps from the east approach, signaling the arrival of Ashley, Samir, and their company. Relieved to see friendly faces, he explains what he heard.
"The Eye is my title, one I gained when this power was poured into me, I'm the first in a long long time, the last Eye has been all but forgotten.
Red was Ebb, Blue called Flow and Yellow was Apogee... I've never had visions of them before, the last is our threat I believe, a being of divine yellow energy, I don't know how it ties in here but if these rat bastards have plans to welcome them into port as soon as they arrive, then I've already set up a greeting party in the caves under Talmouth." Vilus looks to Malachi serious and stoney in expression,
"the visions are a daily thing but never this strong, although this time the mental tirade abated almost immediately, I think it was diverted directly into you, and for that I'm sorry.
If we need more information than that then I don't think the Watcher can provide much more without amplification, if I get the chance once we're done here I'd like to visit the crater in the middle of the first wood."
With that said Vilus grabs a bowl from the kitchen, resumes his seat with Malachi and Marion, and begins eating his fill too.
"Joren! Good to see your friendly face." Ashley exclaims when they arrive. As he mentions the roar down the tunnel, she looks concerned, but Joren can see the exhaustion starting to creep into her features.
"We had a meeting with Two upstairs. The bastard had the audacity to sneak through the window and put a dagger to my throat! Well, he won't be doing that again." She gives him a wink. Then she recites to Joren and Samir what all transpired between Two and Silas. "I just don't know what to think anymore. I feel Silas, or whatever his name is, is genuine I just don't get all the secrecy and well, it hurts."she slumps her shoulders at this and then gives a big yawn.
Joren brightens immediately when he sees his friends, giving both Ashley and Samir a quick bear hug if they allow him. After telling the others of the roar, hearing about what happened back at the Inn and eating a bit of the food they brought, he is quiet for a bit. (He is briefly, visibly enraged when he hears about Two sneaking through a window and putting a blade to Ashley's throat).
Finally, not really having come to any conclusion, but just based on his usual inclination to remain watchful and "on duty" based on his training, he suggests that with the other freed prisoners, at least three people remain on watch in the room at all times, one to watch the cultists in the cages, one to watch and listen at the shored up cave-in, and one ready to be a runner back to the Inn. Perhaps rotating every 2 hours, with each group of 3 containing at least one of the 6 party members at any time. He volunteers to be one of the three on first watch, sensing that the others, certainly Ashley, are tired. That way, everyone else can rest more comfortably back at the Inn.
Also to Samir: "With you discovering how to defuse the staples' electricity, can you also be defusing the runes on these cultists? We are still facing the problem of preventing them from detonating themselves as Jon clearly wanted and Daniel threatened to do. Until we know how to be dealing with that, they will be consuming our resources just to be guarding them."
“The tower in the crater, I saw that as well. It seems to be some sort of focus for your watcher. It feels it is in danger from the threat across the sea” Malachi stops eating and looks over at Marion and Vilus rubbing the mark on his temple “The apogee, I saw his yellow mark on me. The others in our group were marked in blue or red. I feel like the apogee and the others have fought in the past, but I don’t understand it.”
He smiles weakly at Vilus’ apology “No need, I took the opportunity willingly and learned much. But now I need rest. Please wake me when the others return and we decide our next move.” Malachi looks toward the room upstairs, then shudders at the recent memory of their link. He moves to a corner of the main room instead, covering himself with the heavy winter cloak and fading to sleep.
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
Vilus' face still wears a note of concern as he nods and respectfully listens to Malachi's insight and then watches the sorcerer turn in for rest.
He then turns to Marion, "were you schooled in the origin of magics? Was there anything in your history books perhaps about this red and yellow along with your blue lady? I'm also going to wrack my brains on it maybe shake something loose on the things from the ritual side of the organisation that I maybe don't recall just now"
Vilus stays in the room to listen to Marion's response, but he also moves around the room checking all windows and doors, making sure all is locked properly this time and the window that Two entered through isn't damaged or anything.
