Several more goblins go down as the archers shoot at the further platoons and the dwarves hold the line at the gate, but will it be enough. Only a handful of defenders are left.
Then you see them, two young brass dragons diving from the air, breathing fire out at the goblin bowmen. All of them perish in a burst of flame, including their hobgoblin leaders. Trapped between the dwarves and a wall of flame which was their companions, the other goblins try to run as their hobgoblin leaders attempt to keep them in line with the help of the hobgoblin centurion.
Several fleeing goblins are mowed down by the defenders at the gate. A few more surrender to the mercy of the dwarven guards and elven archers. The eight hobgoblins and their captain/centurion do not surrender, however; so, the battle continues while the dragons spread chaos amongst the rest of the army laying siege to Daruinjak.
Dire misses with his sword, but Rhi is able to take out a hobgoblin with his hand axe and flurry. The dwarven defenders take out two more hobgoblins, leaving only the hobgoblin on Dire.
Rhi takes out the last hobgoblin in glorious fashion before it has a chance to strike at Dire.
With the chaos wrought by the two young brass dragons, the goblinoid army is scattered and the siege of Daruinjak is lifted. The little mining town took some heavy losses, and the survivors are happy to be alive.
Joe Smith comes to you, thanking you for your help in defending Daruinjak. "But we need to get back to Freeport as quickly as possible. Over half of the army is headed that way, and people are waiting for us there. Have you ever ridden a dragon before, Dire? Rhi, can you fly ahead to Freeport and meet up with Sergeant Sloane at the FDF office in the Port District?"
Outside of the gate sits one of the brass dragons, preening itself and looking a little bored.
Here is what I have been sending to potential players:
This adventure takes place in my homebrew world of Niersala. The heroes main objective would be to prevent an army of goblins, hobgoblins, and bugbears from attacking Freeport City. Other (homebrew) creatures such as akreni (similar to aakocra and kenku), grilleni (intelligent apes), and pigeni (orcs) from the Dark Realm may be involved. Giants and dragons may also make an appearance later in the campaign.
Humans (Umeni), elves (Liroseni), dwarves (Darveni), gnomes and half-elves are common in Niersala, but I am willing to admit any character that is not too broken.
Welcome to Freeport, travelers (or toreni, as the Liroseni call you adventurous folk). As you make your way through the city, either from the port area or through one of the gates leading into the town, you notice a mix of people: elves, dwarves, and humans mingle freely in the streets. You know that this is the largest port in all of Niersala, a likely place to find adventure. Your first stop should be at the Frelian Defense Forces' (FDF's) station nearby. Posted there you will notice a sign warning of goblin activity in the hills north and east of the town. The notice goes on to say anyone interested in helping to defend Freeport should contact Sergeant Sloane.
If the reports from Daruinjak are anything to go by, then the times are no longer peaceful. It came as no surprise to Sergeant Sloane that a certain number of them would be detailed to work with volunteers and other adventurers in the defense of Freeport.
A soldier walks up, arms and armour clinking softly amidst the morning din, backpack bulking out the travel cloak. A somewhat hoarse contralto asks Is this the transport back to Freeport?
Misha looks at the sign that says to locate Sergeant Sloan. She never realized how many people lived in cities. It was definitely not like her forest home. Her raven black hair, tied up high with two ribbons in a top knot spilled over like a waterfall, rust-colored highlights dazzling in the sunlight. She scampers between everyone’s feet. Her lithe 2’4” frame easily dodges everyone’s legs, though a couple of humans nearly trip over her. She finds herself at the Frelian Defense Forces station. She jumps up onto a chair and then onto a table where a soldier sits, busy with administrative paperwork.
Her voice is bright and cheery, with a hint of musicality, “Good day, Mister! I am looking for a Sergeant Sloane. I saw the posted note when I entered the town. I am ready to help, now that my forest has been razed by those dastardly goblins. May I help, Mister?”
Misha smiles cheerfully at the soldier and hops down. She takes a few steps in one direction before the soldier clears his throat, grabbing her attention. Misha looks back and sees him pointing the opposite direction. She about faces and scampers off to the Inn of the Swan in the Port District, hoping that Sergeant Sloan makes himself known,, or at least wearing a name tag.
The soldier steps off the dragon at the landing inn Freeport, touching foreheads with them in gratitude for the lift, and in memory of those left behind at the mine...
Then, doffing the hood of her cloak, she turns around, long red hair down her back tightly braided, and scanning the crowd for any other Guardsman...

Not sure why the rolls are not working:
If they are close enough, then Rhi will attempt to reach the Centurion and attack:
Attack: 10 Damage: 10
Rhi will then expend a ki point to have 2 unarmed attacks as a bonus action
Attack1: 16 Damage: 7
Attack2: 17 Damage: 7
IF Rhi is too far to engage in melee then he will throw a dart at the centurion:
Attack: 18 Damage: 5
With a flurry of blows, Rhi takes down the hobgoblin centurion, who had already been hit several times. The other eight hobgoblins persist.
The dwarven defenders take out a hobgoblin and wound several more. The archers take out three more, leaving four hobgoblins.
(Not quite sure where we are in the initiative order; so here is Dire's next move)
If there are still baddies within melee range (or can be moved to) he will continue to use his Sword
Attack: 11 Damage: 9
Plus Crimson Rite: 1 Lightening Damage
If they are ranged then he will use his crossbow:
Attack: 23 Damage: 9
D&D since 1984
Rhi continues his onslaught moving onto one of the remaining hobgoblins.
He uses his handaxe to slash at the attacker:
Attack: 18 Damage: 10
Then uses another ki point to use a flurry of blows to finish the hobgoblin off:
Attack: 14 Damage: 8
Attack: 12 Damage: 6
Dire misses with his sword, but Rhi is able to take out a hobgoblin with his hand axe and flurry. The dwarven defenders take out two more hobgoblins, leaving only the hobgoblin on Dire.
Rhi charges at the last hobgoblin and slashes with his axe
Attack: 24 Damage: 10
before hammering with his bare fists.
Attack: 13 Damage: 7
Rhi takes out the last hobgoblin in glorious fashion before it has a chance to strike at Dire.
With the chaos wrought by the two young brass dragons, the goblinoid army is scattered and the siege of Daruinjak is lifted. The little mining town took some heavy losses, and the survivors are happy to be alive.
Your characters level up to level three.
(Huzzah!
Rhi flys back to his meditation spot to rest and absorb the energy around him to center his ki, and ponder on his experiences.
(@Bruce_the_Barbarian - May want recruit some more players for the next phases. I'm fine with soloing but it's up to you.
Yes, I agree. We need more players.
Okay.
