Edgardo
A chant fills his long ears. But not just any chant. They were chanting his name! Filled with confidence by the roar of the crowd he stands and begins to stomp a foot in time with the rhythm. He raises a cake high in the air, looks up at it and slowly stuffs the whole thing in his mouth in a most triumphant way.

Edgardo, Bob, Cad, and Ben (Feasting Orchard):
Cake 11: Edgardo nearly swallows his eleventh cake whole, to a rousing ovation. His gangly opponent tears into hers with renewed determination. CON Save: 10
It is well after midnight, and the carnival is still going strong. There are a couple of hours until the Crowning of the Witchlight Monarch - evidently a nightly ritual in the Big Top at dawn that marks the end of the night. Edgardo, Bob, Cad, and Ben are in the Feasting Orchard, a park full of music and mirth, delicious smells, stilt-walkers, musicians, dancers, and picnickers. Bob, Cad, and Ben, together with a gnome on a swing, a piper, a baby-faced referee, and other onlookers, are watching Edgardo and a gangly teenager face off in a cake-eating contest. Edgardo may make his next CON save on his twelfth cake (the advantage from his inspiring audience having worn off.) Ben has some new information, and Cad has a new toy spider.
Alyeira and Matilda are in the thorn-circled Staff Area, talking to Burly, the bugbear assistant to Witch and Light. After a less-than-satisfying meeting with the carnival owners, Alyeira and Matilda are skeptically mulling over Burly's conspiratorial plan to pressure the owners to talk. He also dropped some disturbing news about creepy creatures sneaking in and out of the Hall of Illusions. See posts 316-317 and 341.
Horatio is outside the wall of thorns, demanding to see the manager. See post 339.
Colin is poking around backstage, behind the Big Top, not far from Horatio. See posts 264-5. He's found a number of stage props, like costume jewelry, a unicorn costume, retractable daggers, a stilt outfit, a paper unicorn horn, etc.
(( Just to clarify - his tone isn't angry or disrespectful, he's asking to talk to the manager - not yelling. His action is to continue to wait and see if anyone replies. ))
"I gotta go," repeats Burly to Matilda and Alyeira, hearing Hoatio's call from outside the wall of thorns. "But consider what I said. We got to get to the bottom of this. I lost my brother, too, you know."
He beckons you forward, toward the wall of thorns, and puts his pumpkin helmet back on his head. As he approaches, the thorns part to form a wide doorway. Horatio is standing there.
"Yes? Who are you and what do you need?" he asks Horatio, gruffly.

Edgardo
That last cake tasted like the first. He devoured it with such ease he picks up another as if he'd only just started to hit his stride. The frosting, custard and Cing sugar that lay stuck to his whiskers told a different story. Again he holds up the cupcake. Triumphantly he shouts to the crowd "Are you not entertained?" He stomps his foot to initiate the chant again. The cake descends into his gaping mouth.
Sizing up the burly fellow, Horatio gulps to himself. "Hey... I need to talk to the owners. There's something wrong happening here and I think people are in danger. In fact, I know they are,.I saw someone almost get tricked into a mirror tonight by a creepy girl. I know there have been a lot of missing people - especially children. This place... it takes things from people. It curses them too..." He hesitates, looking at the ground while rubbing the back of his neck. "Look, I just need to talk to the people in charge, okay? Can I do that?"
“It looks like we have a few options. We can either follow through with Burly’s plan, talk to the workers he recommended, or head back to the Hall of Illusions and investigate ourselves. What would you prefer, Matilda?”
“It looks like we have a few options. We can either follow through with Burly’s plan, talk to the workers he recommended, or head back to the Hall of Illusions and investigate ourselves. What would you prefer, Matilda?”
" I don't know.....do you think any of the others we saw might have had better luck? Most of us seem to be searching for something.....is it mainly children missing? My brother, the big guys brother, the kitten....."
" I felt something weird in the Hall of Illusions but I don't know if that was just what magic feels like...."

... and then spits it out. She sits at the table and hangs her head in both defeat and physical discomfort.
"A winner!" shouts the baby-faced referee with a wide grin. The small crowd erupts in applause as the flautist pipes a merry tune. "Hope we didn't spoil your dinner!" He presents Edgardo with his prize: a special cupcake sealed in an ornate, festively-colored wooden box. (This special cake functions like a potion of invisibility. The whole cupcake must be eaten to gain its benefit.) The referee gives a sympathetic pat on the back to the teenaged loser.
--- Matilda, Alyeira, and Horatio: Burly claps Horatio on the back. "They know. They know and they can't help. But these two ladies might. Listen I gotta get back. You three talk." He waves and hurries back through the opening in the thorny wall, which closes behind him abruptly.
Cad whoops with joy at Edgardo's show of bravado. When his opponent throws in the towel Cad claps so hard his hands hurt. "Twelve! He ate twelve cakes! Amazing!" Amid the cheering he notices the teen's defeated air. He attempts to console her. "Don't hang your head, lass. You did great! You'd'a beat most anyone -- just bad luck you were against a cake-eating machine!"
Edgardo, Bob, Cad, and Ben sit down at one of the open tables as the small crowd disperses. Ben begins to share his new information as a merry dance springs up nearby.
Matilda, Alyeira, and Horatio (outside Staff Area):
Horatio looks silently at the departing hulk. They know? He looks over to the lady and the girl, his voice shaky with frustration. "They know and refuse to help? What does he mean by that?"
A wave of elation sweeps over him as the pimply teen falters on the last cake. Does that mean I won. The thought is quickly confirmed as the referee declares the winner. His ears stand to full height and twitch in excitement. "Woohoo!" He cheers as the cake-in-a-box is handed to him. "I'd like to thank my mothe...." He starts an acceptance speech only to find the crowd dissipating almost immediately. Standing now at an empty table, alone, he makes his way towards Ben, Cad and Bob who had apparently been there cheering him on. "Did you see that?" His face almost completely covered with a cake laced grin. It's then the nausea hits him. He'd never eaten so much cake in his life. He holds up a paw in an excuse me motion. He bolts to the nearest tree and dry retches behind it. Magically, no cake comes forth. When his stomach settles he returns to the group. "Sorry 'bout that. It was great though, wasn't it?"
Bob hops from one leg to another as the champion of the cake eating competition approaches. "Mister Edgardo! Mister Edgardo!"he chirps merrily, "many congratulations, many congratulations indeed sir!"
He watches as Edgardo bolts to the nearest tree and proceeds to empty his stomach. "The taste of victory, no doubt!" Bob calls after him.
Upon his return, Bob is fawning. "Wonderful, Mister Edgardo," he says, clapping. "Why I ne'er seen a bloke polish off so many cakes! Expertly done!"
Horatio looks silently at the departing hulk. They know? He looks over to the lady and the girl, his voice shaky with frustration. "They know and refuse to help? What does he mean by that?"
" Why is he looking at us?", Matilda whispered to the eladrin.
As the others join him at the table, Ben quietly relates the events at the carousel, allowing everyone to guess at the unicorn names based on the hints, then carefully relating the secrets to them (feel free to read the posts). When he is done, he adds, "I have always felt there was something missing in my life, and now I learn that this hag Bavlorna has had whatever was taken from me all this time? What should we do next?"

Cad celebrates with Edgardo -- "Twelve! How in the world can you hold twelve cakes!" -- and joins Ben at the table. He expects a story of another exhibit, perhaps another game won, but is dumbfounded by Ben's discovery. "A hag!" he hisses, looking to be sure no one is eavesdropping on them. "That is very bad! They're powerful, evil creatures -- no one we should be messing with. I'll admit I'd like to have my book returned, but it's not so important that I'd tangle with one of them for it. But that poor child's brother... Has anyone seen her? Or Horatio for that matter? He was with us before I got distracted by the guessing game. We should be careful not to tell him -- he's been acting crazy all night, and I think he just might go after the... person... himself."
