Ben opens the doors north – a hallway. Running the length of this hall is a rug woven with images of thorny white roses. Each of the doors on the north and south walls has an alabaster pedestal standing inside the room beside it. Atop each pedestal is an alabaster vase that holds several long-stemmed white roses. Carved into the vase are the words “Take one” in Common. Another set of doors leads west, and one more to the balcony to the east.
Horatio takes one last look back at the carriage. The door is completely sealed shut, with no room for a tool to pry. Trying to smash a window, rather than prying, would probably be the only obvious straightforward physical option.
Pud stands at the southernmost pedestal and weighs his options. His eyes dart back and forth from Titaani to Matilda and back. He looks back at Ben and Horatio and shrugs, reluctantly plucks out a rose. He does not tuck it behind his ear, instead he walks over to the western double doors, with his shoulders slumped as if he were pouting and listens for anything behind the door.

Matilda, Titaani, and Pud each take a long-stemmed white rose. They are remarkably fresh and nearly perfect in form. There are at least a dozen left in the alabaster vase on the pedestal.
Pud approaches the double doors to the west. A marble cameo depicting a lion wearing a crown is mounted above the door. Putting his ear to it, Pud hears nothing but silence.
After Horatio makes his decision on the key, Ben says, “Come on, let’s join the others.” Grabbing a rose as he enters and reads the inscription, Ben moves over to back Pud up.
Seeing the kid look a little dejected, Ben pats him on the shoulder and shows him how to properly attach the flower to his cloak so that it rests above his left pectoral. Ben quickly follows suit and looks back for Horatio’s arrival.

”Titaani, you have the chime…What do you think? One chime to open both the carriage and the door, or would we need one each? I suspect Horatio may be right about that key,” asks Ben, now quite sure how the Chime of Opening works.

(Alas, Titaani knows quite well from her prior knowledge and recent experience, that it can only open one lock, latch, or object at a time. Does she intend to use it now? If so, upon what?)
Booooonnnnnnnngggggg. The chime issues a clear, reverberating tone that vibrates through your body. *click* The door unlocks. (Chime use 2/10 expended.)
The doors open to reveal a sludge-filled tower. A five-foot-wide ledge at floor level circles the room, and a row of five iron levers protrudes from the wall above the ledge on the far side. Five feet below the ledge is the surface of a pool of reeking sludge. Five slender, gilded cages dangle from chains that hang down from holes in the sixty-foot-high ceiling. Three of the cages are occupied. Suspended in midair outside each cage is a pixie holding a tiny, gilded wand. Everything in this tower – like the rest of the palace – appears to be frozen in place. Standing motionless next to the levers is a man garbed in black whose face is half-hidden by a hood. A bat-shaped amulet hangs around his neck, and he tightly grips a quarterstaff.

Ben:
”You know, Horatio, you could easily be right. If you think it is worth the use of the chime’s magic to get the key, I say go for it,” responds Ben.

Matilda selects a rose and tucks it behind her ear...
Titaani grabs a rose and does the same as Matilda. "Look, we're matching!"

"Come on, flower family! Onward!" Titaani announces proudly, opening the western double doors. "Adventure awaits!"
Titaani finds that the double doors to the west are firmly locked.
Ben:
”If we play the chime in the right location, so you think we could unlock both the doors and the carriage?” asks Ben.

"I don't know," Titaani says, shrugging. "Maybe it works like my wand, and you have to point it at something for it to work."
Matilda watched eagerly to see what would open...

"Let's see what's behind this door first!" Titaani holds the chime up to the double doors and activates it.
