The party quickly clears out the remaining golem and magens, leaving the space beyond the portal relatively clear. Sam enters again (having first met with the demiplane in thus chamber, before resuming the fight in the hall of stars) and Avarice and Morwena rush in as well. But, when Angus, Tetrevess and Chadderlay (assuming he's still here) cross the threshold, they feel a pain at the pit of their stomach.
The demilich's lair causes direct necrotic damage to non-evil creatures. Sam, Morwena and Avarice are all evil. It dissipates over a Ren day span if the demilich is destroyed, so it's still very much active.
<I framed it as a choice so you have agency over it. You dint, strictly speaking, have to go in there, but Morwena and Avarice definitely will.>
I do need to know who's in the the demiliches inner sanctum now, though.
Angus, Tetrevess?
The sunken library in the middle of the study has shelves lining its 10-foot-high walls and a ladder that can be pushed along a circular track to reach every shelf. Among the books and scrolls kept here is a bundle of parchment maps and schematics detailing aspects of Ythryn. Characters who study these papers for at least 1 hour learn the following facts:
The city was held aloft by the Ythryn mythallar. Up to eight mages could control this device at one time. If all of them agreed, they could use its power to move the city through the skies or control the weather for miles around it.
If disaster ever struck the city, the wizards could exploit the power of the obelisk to turn back time and avert ruin. The schematics contain instructions for activating the obelisk, which requires a staff of power as a power source.
The command word to deactivate the force field around the spire is “Olostin.”
Amid the rubbish on the upper level of the study: a small metal case containing four vials of quicksilver (500 gp each), an intricate crystal rod (1,800 gp), Iriolarthas’s fully charged staff of power, a hefty spellbook titled The Incantations of Iriolarthas, and an ancient Sarruck artifact: the scroll of tarrasque summoning.
The crystal rod and vials of quicksilver are nonmagical material components needed for the create magen spell in Iriolarthas’s spellbook.
<those last couple of items might interest Sam and Terevess>
Professor Skant is excited by the discovery of the scroll of tarrasque summoning, since the tarrasque is one of its areas of expertise. The professor orb knows all the tarrasque lore in the Monster Manual, as well as the monster’s traits, which it’s happy to share with the party.
Tetrevess reacts with pain as he enters the room, but he’s stunned by the library and doesn’t immediately run away (although he’s quite hurt). He heads to the spellbook and the staff, looks at chadderlay. “ I may need some healing soon. But I want to study this place. I think the power of this place is worth considering. I want to understand how it works- it seems the staff is used as a power source. As for the scroll… truly a devastating creature. If there was a civilization that needed destroying, it might come in handy. But we should ensure it stays in safe hands..”
(Does the necrotic damage repeat or get worse? If not, Tetrevess will happily start studying in here, taking a short rest if that is possible, to learn what he can. )He’d like to copy the spells in the spellbook, in particular he’s interested in creating Magens.
He’d like to carry the staff of power, offering his own staff (voyager staff) to chadderly. But when he discovers it can be used to power this device to time travel, he think’s carefully about what can be done with that. What is the motivation of the other wizards?
can we do a long rest in here? He’s down to 23 HP, and pretty much out of spell slots.
<Things are still happening. There will be a level up after this, but I'm Just waiting to see if Angus is in or out. @Tetrevess, read the spoiler in #3350. You actually can long rest after this too, if you want. Might not be a bad idea, then again.. who really knows?>
Does the spellbook have any other properties to it? He will start copying the spells he doesn’t know yet into his spellbook, using his ‘wizardly quill’ which does this quickly.
Angus recoils as the wave of evil necromantic energy hits him when he enters the room. Feeling the life drain from him, he considers a quick retreat... but his companions seem either unaffected or determined to stay, so he steels himself, and pushes forward. (the living demiplane thing was defeated?)
(Yes we had killed the living spell. But is this the extra dimensional space the living spell made? I’m a little confused:). Chadderly (Brian) hasn’t been online in a long time, I hope he’s ok.
if we can roll right into a long rest T will do that.

<That's where the galvan magen and flesh golems came from. They were trapped inside. The demiplane nwver went through the portal, or it would have exploded. This is a eeal space, it just doesnt have any real doors, and its not actually adjacent to the room you came from.>
After a minute, the portal closes, apparently trapping Avarice Morwena Angus Sam and Tetrevess (and Chadderlay, if he shows up) in Iriolarthas’s lair.
“Err.. hopefully there’s a way out of here. But I guess there’s worse places to be stuck. Imagine being somewhere with nothing to read.” Tetrevess says, on realizing the door has shut.

<staying here results in 16 necrotic damage>
<I was waiting to see who proceeds>

Is it 16 damage one time, or does the damage recur every so often?
That's the unknown element. Angus doesn't know if it's just his initial reaction or an enduring effect.
But I will tell you in the spoiler.
It's just once upon entering.

(Also- do we level up after this? Still 13th level?)

Tetrevess takes a short rest first, studying the library and the archives, then will take a long rest. He uses detect magic to study things found.
Does the spellbook have any other properties to it? He will start copying the spells he doesn’t know yet into his spellbook, using his ‘wizardly quill’ which does this quickly.
