“certainly, we can decide who takes these things later. As I said, I merely want the spells- you can keep the book. . But let me see if there’s not some spells that may be of assistance to us in this immediate situation”.
Tetrevess peruses the spellbook (during a short rest), his own spellbook, a tome encased in dragon hide, out on a table to his side, a quill scribbling furiously in it in purple ink. His manifest mind hovers above the new spellbook, studying the spells.
he reaches out telepathically (using telepathic bond) to Angus and Sam (and Chadderly, who seems a bit stunned at the moment) and says “Watch her. She’s not to be trusted. It might be for the best to take… precautions.. “ ,
will take a long rest, but after he ensures the group is watching avarice for any signs of, well, avarice.
Avarice agrees and shows no outwards signs of enmity as she and Morwena scour the library. The arcana and investigation are to find things in the library, magical and mundane. You'll find things for sure, it's just a matter of time.
just to be extra clear, I want a check for each of those from Tetrevess, so we can resolve the time, but... if I understand #3367-8, not looking through the books, just, well - which one? a long rest or copy the spells from the book? One of these things comes before the other.
While keeping watch for threats from creatures known and unknown in the study, Angus comes across an ancient volume with a familiar symbol on the spine, the crest of the Knights of Myth Drannor
<does he open it?>
Morwena continues to search through books, as does Avaraice. After 4 hours she mutters something. Angus was either reading the book or watching Avarice. If it's tbe latter, he sees a portal open in the floor of the lower section of the study, where Avarice descends the stairs into the darkness below.
<If Angus was reading the book, he misses what she said, otherwise, he hears it.>
You'll all have to decide if you want to follow Avarice ir not. The hoke I. The floor with the steps is still there. You can go back to long resting or follow the teifling at once. It's an individual decision. Staff of power is still on the table, but Avarice took the spellbook. She left behind the scrolls of Tarrasque and Meteor, though.
Because search was only 1 hour, I didn't give any results, but let's say T uncovered the following.
The city was held aloft by the Ythryn mythallar. Up to eight mages could attune to this device at one time. If all of them agreed, they could use its power to move the city through the skies or control the weather for miles around it.
If disaster ever struck the city, the wizards could exploit the power of the obelisk to turn back time and avert ruin. The schematics contain instructions for activating the obelisk, which requires a staff of power as a power source. (Figuring out the schematics will take more time, but the arcana roll is sufficient to figure it out.)
(Assuming T is sleeping, but he wouldn’t have trusted her. If she grabs the spellbook his manifest mind would alert him, waking him up and he would follow her, but only if angus came with. He’d grab the staff and comet scroll (Sam grabbed the other one) before going down)
I was trying ro give Angus something to do, advance his arc and make a real paladin-y choice. But it's been 2 days, irl and i dont want ti keep everyone else waiting.
I will agree manifest mind can watch over the spellbook. If it's visibly there, it might or might not see Avarice tske it, depending on sltesrh/o3rception, etc. (She can also cast invisibility). Mainly, I'm trying to keep her actions aligned with her motivation and give an incentive for following her sooner rather than later. To this end, Avarice is careful to stay out if earshot of the magical smart phone, but might allow herself to be heard by the watchful paladin. Most I'd tbe things you've found are on the upper level. She is in the lower level.
What I'm not certain of is how manifest mind would alert Tetrevess, or anyone else, of what it sees. There are some spells and rhings tjst do exactly thus, but I don't see anything in the description if that feature that suggests it does. I might just hand wave it, assuming Avarice at least thinks she can get the book and ideally you'd still want to follow her, or at least go where she is going, too.
(Ok- well I don’t want to pre-empt angus- The whole manifest mind is really vague as an ability. I guess a lot is left to dm fiat. It’s like they never really finished fleshing it out. Cool concept, but needs a bit more clarity on what it can and can’t do. I assumed it has a mind of its own, can be talked with, etc).
Tetrevess rises, grabs the staff and comet scroll, and follows avarice down the stairs.
<No level up just yet. It is just ahead, though. Also, 4 hours into the resting, Avarice made off with the book, so the decision to keep resting is up to you, if you become aware of it. I thonk this was a good plan, but unforseen absence has maybe squashed the momentum here.>
Within the book, it is revealed that the ancient elves once opened a gate to the far realm. It is through this fate that the elder evil known as Father Llymic entered this world.
If you got the long rest, you'd be trapped for ten days in thst room. Thst woukd be a bad thing. So, following the teifling after a short rest (or 4), you find yourself on thr upper level of a large hexagonal space, open in the center with a glittering domed roof. statues and other objects of art have fallen from their plinths and lie in broken shards across the floor, and centuries of exposure have ruined most of the paintings that hang on the walls in elaborate frames.
Suspended from the ceiling of a spacious fifty-foot square antechamber is the glittering, frost-covered corpse of a thirty-foot-long aberration shaped like a funnel, resembling an anemone. A tooth-filled maw at the wider end is surrounded by rubbery cilia, and around it dangle four limp, spindly appendages, each one ending in a clawed hand. At the opposite end of the body is a tail with a stinger.
A frost-covered plaque is bolted to a pedestal nearby, and the entire display is framed by four stone pillars that are, oddly, frost-free.
The dead creature is a magically preserved phaerimm suspended from the ceiling by a dozen strong wires. Wiping away the frost on the plaque, you read what it says about the phaerimm in Draconic:
ADULT PHAERIMM—DO NOT TOUCH!
Dwellers of the Underdark, phaerimm are malevolent aberrations that are master spellcasters and highly resistant to magic. They use their telepathy to control the weak-minded. They strive to erase all other beings from existence and are known to have caused the collapse of the sarrukh empire of Isstosseffifil. They use their tail stingers to inject their eggs into alien hosts.
...
Proceeding farther into the upper floor can see the museum’s domed ceiling, which is still intact and a sight to behold. It depicts a powerful mage standing on a balcony of the enclave’s central spire, addressing a sea of Netherese citizens below, who stare up at the figure, cheering. This is an image of Iriolarthas at the height of his power, magically preserved in stained glass that glows with its own arcane light. Eight large portraits adorn the walls beneath the dome, depicting Iriolarthas’s eight apprentices, known as the Wizards of the Ebon Star. The portraits hang 20 feet above the ground, and a frost-covered plaque is fixed to the wall just beneath each one. The faces in the portraits are depicted as looking up toward their master, Iriolarthas, with expressions of respect. By scraping the ice from the plaques, you see their names: High Abjurer Taruth, High Conjurer Damorith, High Diviner Apius, High Necromancer Cadavix, High Evoker Zadulus, High Illusionist Ajamar, High Enchanter Ivira, and High Transmuter Metaltra.
(Ok! I love this module. The descriptions are so cool!). Tetrevess is totally fascinated by all of this, but is also looking for avarice. He wants those spells!

In about 7 hours, Tet can copy all the spells, (probably less because I’m sure he already has some of them).
Avarice agrees and shows no outwards signs of enmity as she and Morwena scour the library. The arcana and investigation are to find things in the library, magical and mundane. You'll find things for sure, it's just a matter of time.

ok was confused on what was here. He will start by looking through the library then.
He will do the long rest after searching for an hour, asking Sam and angus to keep an eye on avarice and the contested spellbook
(The time was just my calculations for how long it would take)
Sam will have a long rest during this time then help out

Let's see what Angus decides...
<FYI: The book is in Elvish, which Angus CAN read, despite the fact he doesn't speak elvish. Dove somehow makes it possible.>
