Sparhawk pulls out the map to try to hone in on the location. "I think we are about here, judging from the landmarks." "We can now get the the lake, and follow it toward the river."
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
You move through the desolated terrain of the Valley of embers towards the tip of Lake Luo. As you near it, the word lake seems generous at best. The surface of the water is covered with a layer of ash, making the area more mud than water. Occasionally some of the mud boils up and burps steam.
"In this open terrain, it may make sense to move more quickly." Sparhawk looks at the disgussting water, realizing he will not be able to wash off here." As we get closer to the water, we will stay far enough away that any creatures within will not be within range, say at least 100ft, but close enough we can use it to help guide our way. Sparhawk asks the group which way makes more sense, but he is leaning toward following the drier south side of the lake toward the west and then North by the river.
"Everyone mostly healed up?" Sparhawk looks at his friends. (Can use some or most of your hit dice during the short rest to heal)
Sparhawk considers Bjorn's situation with some concern, but for now, he doesn't feel it is worth doing anything about it.
He has also been thinking about what to write to their present and future employers. What will he tell Kutoti Irongrass about what they have discovered and of the death of Abernath. What should he tell Dietrich Thornston about their current situation. Clearly, they have let Fist down, but there is nothing he can do about that right now. He suspects that the magic tube he has will allow for two way communication.
Slowly, he begins to compose the letter in his head, remembering that sometimes, "less is more" he says out loud to no one in particular.
It occurs to Sparhawk that they have not really briefed him on their mission for Dietrich.
"So Eberk, we haven't really caught you up on our mission for Dietrich. If you recall, Dietrich is the lone rider we met on the road when Sorsha was with us, just before we found the river boat wreck on our way to finding bugbear Bernard." He looks at the dwarf, knowing he would recall him. "We looked him up when we returned to Luskan. He is a rare goods acquirer of sorts, and has this huge hall filled with rare skulls. One of them was like the T-rex we fought."
"Long story short, he wants to find the skull of the first storm giant from the beginning of Faerun, and the location is somewhere on Chult."
Sparhawk will look to any of the others that want to fill in details.
"Then our employer anticipates there are stages to our mission. (1) find the location of the skull, (2) extraction (which may prove difficult for a number of reasons, including potentially other storm giants and other groups seeking the skull, (3) bring it back to Luskan."
"Our other two missions were to discover the wherabouts of Abernath and if he was alive, and to help Fist recover the artifact stolen by Bernard."
"So here we are, now heading to civilization I hope, and we have a way to contact Dietrich with this magic scroll."
( will assume you take the south side of the lake as you indicated)
while you catch Eberk up on the details and sweat horribly from high temps and humidity you make your way, remaining 100’ approximately away from the lake itself. Intermittent belches from the surrounding volcanoes sending fireballs of various sizes across the valley that crash into the earth with grand showers of embers. Usually followed by burps from the mud-lake pushing up steam and mud particles in the area. A few of these ground eruptions happen near to you ( within 20’)
After a moment you realize something is different with these bursts of mud and steam. They don’t dissipate and seem to have taken on a humanoid like shape
The creatures will use their surprise to encircle your group, and the steam beings forms become a hard to perceive blur causing disadvantages to sight based attacks against them

"Less ... is ... more" Lir says, as if finally discovering some hidden truth.
Hearing the usually quiet Lir, Sparhawk is brought back into reality and hits a big off his neck.
“Pass that bug repellant over. “ the grouchy half-orc mumbles, the heat of the day starting to get to him.
"Guess we won't be seeing much wildlife here, after what's happened." Bjorn's machete shifts into a throwing axe, as if in contradiction.
(I'm good on HP.)

Frangipani grins, she's seen mephits before....back home...
" Let me try this."
Frangipani gestured and a sparkling deep green ocean wave appeared out of the air and crashed down onto 3 of the Mephits.

Frangipani’s wave washes over the elemental creatures and they seem to take it in stride.

Lit attempts to complement Frangipani's attack by using 'shape water' to freeze the sodden ground and pooled liquid around them.
