Sparhawk, 6ft 4, shiny armored greenish tinted skinned paladin, jumps dextrously from the boat and lands next to the port master.
"Ah, my good sir, congratulations on your wifes birthday, today is indeed a glorious day." Sparhawk smiles and reaches out a hand in friendship (Happy to see civilization at last) "We are associates of Volothamp Geddarm, so I expect we would get his customary tithe on our catch."
He winks at the man, and whispers under his breath, quickly pointing at Lir, then looking back a bit wide-eyed...
"That one almost ate me last week, he's kind of rabid and protective of his things." "Of course make a tired captain look good to his crew would garner a favor from me, Captain Sparhawk, in the future."
Sparhawk looks back at Frangipani, then back to the dock master. "See, they almost ate me alive! Me. Can you believe it?" He glances back again, worried. "I need to use my earnings to buy them some fresh fish and quickly."

“ Volvo you say? He is very famous. You must be a skilled crew indeed. Please give him my regards when you see him. The tithe goes to the city coffers, so the Prince can maintain the safety and security of all. You will find the city to be wonderous and well worth the small investment.”
the boys load up each of the pots and jars and other declared goods carefully on the scale and the mark the weights on a large grid of beads, similar to the abacus you are familiar but with more columns and colors. As one of the boys puts the strange native mask onto the scale, the dock master takes immediate notice.
” well, that is a wonderful specimen of a Baktiri war mask. Never have seen one with embedded jewels before…if you find it difficult to sell in town, give me an opportunity to purchase it from you…my wife collects these, has thing for Baktiri art.”
after they tally up, the goods by weight and write down a quick inventory of the types of goods, he tells you, “ all the jars would be too time consuming to properly catalog, so we will just call them bulk spices. The total tithe you owe is 50g 25 sp.”
he begins writing out the tax paid receipt as he holds his hand out for the payment.

“ you will be able to find great food and Mr Volothamp at the thundering lizard tavern. If you need a quieter place to stay there is also an inn called Kaya’s house of repose. Both places are located near the red bazaar..” he points it out on the simple map drawn on the back of your tithe receipt
When Lir takes a bit, Sparhawk flinches away like being chased by a bee. Then he laughs and offers his hands to them to unload. "Where can we secure our loot?"
(I think we still have money), Sparhawk pulls out the agreed on money and looks over the receipt for accuracy.
Disappointed that the man didn't give him a discount, keeps smiling kindly.
"Thank you. Any trustworthy merchants to look over our findings that you would recommend?"
"And, may I know your name and that of your wife should we choose to sell the mask to you?"
"Allright crew, anything else here or shall we find some drinks, food, perhaps a warm bath and soft bed for the night?"
( he did give you 2% off discount)
He sort of chuckles before responding, “ using merchant and trustworthy in the same sentence is very funny indeed. All joking aside, your best bet is to rent or purchase a cart just over there and keep good watch on it until you make a deal. The Prince has very strict punishment for thieves, yet they still seem more than willing to risk their necks. My name is O’ Thaylo and my wife is Miraj. “
Bjorn, having learned a very small degree of tact from his time on the crew, refrains from his usual exaggerated money negotiations, and instead takes the opportunity to get his land legs beneath him while the captain talks with O'Thaylo. "What a place this is!" He marvels at the vibrant, joyous city they've arrived in.
"Indeed, indeed. We'll be merchants for the time being, so we'll need a stall or a wagon or some such. But since we're likely moving on in a few days' time, a rental's in order. What are our funds?" (Looks like I've got 14.9 gp. If we take out the tithe, we're down to -35.35. If we don't have coin to get back to a positive number then we'll have to sell some loot (magic needles perhaps, gems) or do some work before we can get a cart or a place to stay lol.)
(Bjorn negotiates for a rental cart that can display our various goods for sale, then when nobody's looking, uses his 3rd level Distort Value to make our two priciest gemstones seem twice as valuable. The effect will last 8 hours.)
(I'll go back and figure out what those are shortly lol.)
Frangipani studied one of the dinosaurs drawing a nearby cart with interest then in a blur of motion became it. The newly appeared bluish Charonosaurus waited for Bjorn to return so it could be hitched to the cart.
Eberk pulls out his rope and begins making a makeshift harness to attach the cart to Frangipani. “Hopefully this won’t be too uncomfortable for you. If it is, give me a nudge and I can adjust it.”

The boys help load up your cart and tha harbor master wishes you good fortune and good luck ad he moves off to check in more cargo from an incoming boat
having secured a cart and unloaded their gear, Sparhawk flips the dock sailors some coin
As Sparhawk falls back several steps as the huge beast pushes him,
””Ah, I see we are ready to head out crew.”
“Let us secure a few rooms at Kayas, find if the place can guard our cart or take watches. Let’s split up and get information on this place. Relax and enjoy. see if anything is of interest.”
“We’ll meet at the Thundering Lizard an hour after sunset to regroup. And discuss next steps.”

Frangipani looked around wide-eyed, she stared at the man for a disconcertingly long time before breaking off and letting them handle the finances.
As Sparhawk talked she frowned dramatically, " It was very disturbing. I am the one who called dibs on eating the Captain."
Sparhawk looks back at Frangipani, then back to the dock master.
"See, they almost ate me alive! Me. Can you believe it?" He glances back again, worried. "I need to use my earnings to buy them some fresh fish and quickly."
Eberk shakes his head and smiles, happy to be back near the sea and out of the jungle.

"Master Bjorn, could you perhaps procure us a cart?"
