The stairway comes up directly into a hallway with a small reading nook and a window that give a nice view of the other houses and some sight on the river Mirar. There are 2 doors on the left side of the hallway ( looking in the direction of the arrow), 1 doorway at the end of the hallway, and 1 door to the right near the end of the hall. In the center of the hallway there is a rectangular alcove with 3 small globes lighting the alcove. The wall of the alcove contains 3 paintings. Each painting is a fanciful scene with a castle or tower.
Bjorn doesn't look directly at any paintings. "Sounds like a note for travel preparations, then. The city may have been surprised by Abernath's disappearance, but he wasn't. He planned it." He strides over to the reading nook and looks for any loose notes or hellfire burn marks. If possible, he moves one of the globes around to illuminate under the furniture. [Investigation:] 4
Trotting upstairs Frangipani stares in fascination at the Kraken.
" So....the Thay Wizards wanted their book, so they sent kidnappers who killed the servants and took Abernath because he wouldn't tell them where it was? Though there aren't too many signs of torture...so maybe the Thay Wizards want to question him themselves......either way the place doesn't look tossed so they weren't looking for the book here....unless they are really tidy kidnappers."
" Thats what I think anyway. If Abernath gets back to the Thay Wizards, from your expressions, we aren't finding him....so we need to find him before he gets there."

The reading nook if full of travel style books. “ Lands Of Chult” by Eldrick Bernicke, “ Play in the land of Shay” by Kutoti Irongrass, and “ Beasts of the Moon” by Elsinore Harpell…no notes or anything, some tea cup stains on a little end table, and dust.
Sparhawk examines the area by the warship. Looking for another secret door or something out of place
investigation 21
Sparhawk and Frangipani take a closer look to the warship, noticing the amazing details of the waves, the utter look of terror on the faces of the men visible on the deck of the doomed ship. You swear one of them looks a lot like Sorsha.
(Didn’t Sorsha see a secret/hidden entrance on the second floor?) If so and assuming she told us, which room would we guess leads to the hidden entrance?
Sparhawk trying to determine the next door to go through that may lead to that hidden
Sparhawk grabs the book by Irongrass. He would like to learn more about his magical employer. He quickly looks through it and puts it in his bag for later review.

That was down on the first floor. You only went into the rooms to the right of the hallway
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
Vars also takes a look in the reading nook, pointedly keeping his eyes off of the paintings. The last thing any of them need is to be whisked away again.

Across the alcove is another painting. This one is an ocean painting, with a large Warship being attacked and drug down by a Kraken
“Careful of those pictures. I would only want to visit that middle one”. Sparhawk wonders of any other pictures are teleporters.
Eberk casts detect magic in the hallway.
( how many slots have you used?)

I've cast it twice as a ritual and this will be my third with a slot (I have 3 total).
Frangipani looked delighted at the tableau and smiled happily as she turned to join the book inspectors.
Ok
The center of this hallway glows with strong magic essence
