For those seeking the Sheriff, you’ll find him at the jail. Sheriff Redd is sitting at his desk, writing in a journal. He is a stocky male dwarf with a red beard and two braids down the sides. Each braid has a gold band with dwarven runes carved into them. He wears a thick leather breastplate over his ruby red shirt. On his shoulder is a small brown scaled pseudodragon, and as you enter you can see Redd turn and talk to him with clear affection. He looks up as you open the door.
After you have settled up with all supplies and monies have been paid, you proceed to the jail. As you open the door, the Sheriff looks up and says, "How can I help you today?" He closes his ledger and stands, the pseudodragon on his shoulder keeping his balance. "Jasper, we have guests!" a pause, and then "Is anything the matter?"

A wizard is never late, nor is he early, he arrives precisely when he means to.
He turns back to Duke and sighs, "Alas, even that is beyond my current budget, but once we collect on that next job of yours, who knows".
He starts to turn away, then pauses for a moment and turns back. "We are also interested in that reward for the payroll bandits. That would help some too. Don't suppose you know anything that might help on that score?", he adds, watching Duke carefully to try and read him when he replies.

Duke nods to Salamir and says “I am worried about bandits around here, taking the payroll, striking our supply wagons. You should talk to the Sheriff about it, but my suspicion is something like that group of goblins that hit you yesterday. He may have some leads on where to find them. I don’t think anyone else has found them yet. You have plenty of time to look into that before I need you again, and I think it would really help this town.” He looks concerned and interested, but has no other specific information to help.

Salamir nods to Duke Bergen. "That is our next stop as it happens, for that very reason. Thanks for the time, and the bonus for a job well done", he says pocketing the playing cards that Duke offered for free. He gives Duke a tip of his hat and leaves with the others and heads to the jail.
Glitter Creek Jail
Salamir walks into the jail and removes his hat, noticing the interaction between the Sheriff and the Pseudodragon. He stares a little at the creature, not having seen one before, but then focusses on the Sheriff.
"Good day, Sheriff Redd I presume. My companions and I are new in town, having been hired as guards for Duke Bergen's shipments, and we thought it worth introducing ourselves to the local lawman. Not least because we have noticed that wanted poster of yours, for the Payroll Bandits", he says whilst trying to size up the Dwarf.
"I am Salamir", he adds, giving a respectful bow of his head, then moving aside to let the others introduce themselves if they wish.

Javier smiles nervously from towards the rear of the group, “And I’m Javier, Javier Whitdew. Like my companion said we are in town for a few days and are looking to take on the aforementioned quest in the meantime.”
Belkaria, noticing the pseudodragon right away, scurries up to it, and barely giving the sheriff a glance, coos, "Why hello there little guy!" she stops just short of petting it and smiling, finally turns to the sheriff. "Good morning! I haven't seen one of these little guys in so long, I just love them! I used to have one as a friend back where I'm from, but well, I wish I stilldid."she looks a bit wistful, then in the next beat, "What's their name? Oh, and mine is Belkaria, nice to meet you."
Redd says "Hello Salamir, my name is Sheriff Redd. I heard from Duke that his guards killed some goblins. I guess that's you fellers? You look like you could handle yourself..." He looks all of you over. "Payroll Bandits? Yessirree, that is a big problem we are having around here. They have been robbing the shipments from Norwick. The mining company, RJ Mining Company has put up a reward to catch 'em, they also took their payroll meant for these honest folk, 100 gold pieces ... no one has claimed it. We're stretched a little thin around here..."
Javier :
Redd turns to you and says "Nice to meetcha Javier, I would love to have your help with catchin the payroll bandits. I think they are holed up in the Forbidden Caverns. I don't know much more about 'em though."
Belkaria :
"His name is Jasper, ma'am. We've known each other quite a while. Most of the time he minds me, until he doesn't. Like when it's about food, right you whippersnapper?" You see Redd pause, seems to be in brief communication with Jasper, then says "I know dangit, it's coming soon! You just wait, it's not noon yet! And no, Bob isn't back yet!" Jasper makes a look of disappointment, digs slightly into Redd's shoulder for emphasis, then settles down.
Salamir, you get a very clear picture of Redd, observing his mannerisms, his tone, his conversation. He seems to you like a good man who's in a little bit over his head, like he doesn't have enough help. Your intuition tells you that he would have gone after the bandits himself, he does seem to be a brave, stalwart sort for a Sheriff, he only has one Deputy, Bob, who apparently likes to travel and spend significant time off work. He seems glad to have your help, receptive of outsiders, and will help you in any way he can.

Hlin stares at Jasper for a moment and quickly focuses in on Sheriff Redd. "Well met, I am Hlin. Do you happen to have any leads or clues? These bandits seem quite slippery"
Garth has remained quiet after following the others from the inn to the sherrif. As they walked he looked around the town, trying to assess the quality of the operation being run -- well-managed, clean etc ... or something else.
When they reached the sherrif's office he in content to listen. Everyone seems to be asking what he wants to know, and Hlin's question seems most pressing to him as well.
Salamir listens as the sheriff answers all the questions the others have, before asking a couple of questions of his own.
”We have heard a lot about these Forbidden Caverns. We are obviously not local as you know, can you provide a map as to where they are? And tell us what is so forbidden about them?”.
Redd smiles at Hlin and says “Hello Hlin. I have a feeling, haven’t been able to look into it to be sure, but I think they may be holed up in the old Fritz mine. If you follow the trail along the northwest road out of town, about an hour out of town, you’ll come to a stone bridge. There’s a trail there by the stream, you’ll see some light colored gravel. There are some big cliffs on either side near there. I’ve been by there a couple of times before and wondered about it. I feel like if you look there Miss, you’ll find those bandits.” He looks grateful and interested in your help. “We would sure be appreciative of your help with this matter.” Redd draws on a piece of paper the trail leading to the bridge and the the gravel path leading to the mine, circles it.
Redd looks at Salamir and chuckles. “I don’t know exactly why lad. I don’t know who originally called ‘em that, but it stuck. I think it is something mysterious sounding, what with those rangers and druids that used to live deep in the caverns, the Shadow Guardians. There was also that crazy old wizard who lived deep in the caverns, they had some kind of a temple somewhere inside in honor of a Phoenix. These are just rumors to me you see, I’ve never actually seen ‘em. But “Forbidden”, I have no clue lad.” Redd chuckles to himself and he scratches Jasper who seems to be listening with interest.

Javier let’s out a loud gulp as she shakes his head abruptly to refocus. “Thank you for the information, it sounds like we’ll need to be cautious and prepared for a whole host of challenges when we arrive. This wizard, did he die in the caverns?.”
he looks to his companions “anything else we need to do before heading out?”
"So these Forbidden Caverns... I heard about a man named Dirk that went there and got yellow colored warts on his face? Is this true? Something we need to worry about? Cause.." and she swirls her hand around in front of her face, "this is obviously a precious commodity. No warts for me, thank you."
“Quite so”, Salamir says with a chuckle regarding Belkaria’s comments.
”I was also wondering, Sheriff, if there was a witness to the payroll robbery we can speak to? Has there just been the one?”, he asks curiously, wondering whether there was anyone else they could get information from before they left for the caverns.
Redd considers, says “I don’t know what happened with that old wizard, no one that I know is aware if he’s alive, I heard rumors of some temple devoted to a phoenix or some such, but who knows it he’s still alive.”
Belkaria :
“Dirak is a good miner, I heard that he bought a map off old Fritz, come to think of it. We usually see him in town every week to buy supplies but I haven’t seen him in 3 weeks or so. I don’t know anything about any warts, haven’t seen him.”
Salamir :
”I don’t know of any witnesses to the payroll robbery. Ole Zeke was driving a wagon carrying it, the wagon was found with his body in it, filled with arrows, the two horses were gone and the payroll, everything that was of use taken. That was a little more than a week ago. No leads since. But my hunch is that mine ….”
Redd sits back down and starts to write in his ledger, getting back to his work. “Any other questions you fellers have? If you could look into it I’d be mighty appreciative.” He carves up an apple and gives a little bite up to Jasper, taking a bite himself and then resuming his work.

Assuming all have asked their questions of Redd and handled their business in town, the group assembles and begins their trek up the northwest road. The trail follows a creek flowing out of the valley. There are tall looming cliffs on each side of the valley. After traveling about an hour, you notice a streak of light covered gravel in a talus field at the base of a cliff. There is a faint trail leading to the opening of what appears to be a mine, it fits the description of the Old Fritz mine. This is what Redd was describing to you and where he suggested that you go.
There is an alcove and a shrub oak and some briars that are hiding mine tailings and a mine entrance. A faint trail leads to the entrance and appears worn, but does not have fresh signs of recent use. The mine entrance is 10 feet wide and 6 feet tall.
