“A glorified puppet… that’s what’s been scaring the goblins and us. I wonder why though. Certainly there’s more investigating to be done, perhaps a chat with this gnome if we can get to him.” Javier says with a bit of embarrassment in his voice. He’ll look around the room and cast light to better illuminate his surroundings.
Belkaria looks to Javier, "You're embarrassed, I just lost a spell slot to a damn puppet!" she declares frustrated. "Salamir, what do you see over there? Any idea what caused this? Damn thing is falling apart now."
she starts following Salamir to see what is going on.
Garth starts laughing, "And I thought the damned sprites were trouble enough!" After gathering up his weapons he stares down at the small door. "We have no quarrel with you, Sir Gnome. And the goblins are gone." He glances in the direction of Tark and winces. "Mostly."
As you walk closer, the small metal handle is a crank, and if you look up you see a pulley system and a line that the “creature” was attached to. Apparently he was checking and resetting the system when you were observed.
A little opening in a door 3 feet off the ground slides open and you see some eyes look at you curiously, then he says :
“We don’t want any cheesy salesmen, vagabonds or otherwise no goods around here, be off and go bother the goblins.” And the the little opening in the doorway slides shut, but you can tell he hasn’t moved away, you figure he might be remaining, listening.

This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
Salamir sheathes his rapier as the others look about at the contraption and it's mechanism, and walks over to the small door behind which remains the Gnome.
"What a wonderful deterrent", he says loud enough for the Gnome to hear. "It takes a keen mind to think of something like that, and to build it too".
"And to think, even the mighty Sawtooth was fooled by one Gnomes ingenuity. To meet the mastermind behind this would surely be an honour", he adds, hoping flattery might be the way into the Gnomes good books.
Javier looks at Belkaria “don’t be too harsh on yourself. We all got fooled hehe.” He turns towards the others speaking towards the gnomes. Waiting for a response.
Hlin's demand to open up is met with silence, but when Salomir turns on the charm, you see the small window in the door slide open. You see a pair of eyes and the voice from beyond the door speaks up.
"Thank you. It is quite a deterrent, isn't it? Fooled you, didn't it? Hah! Well, it works pretty well on the goblins. But now you've ruined it. Much to do, much to do .... You know, I have some information about them if you could make it more profitable for me. Perhaps some gold, mmm?" A little hand extends from the window, then pulls back inside, holds his palm up. "My name is Glim, by the way. Who might you be?"

A wizard is never late, nor is he early, he arrives precisely when he means to.
“Good to meet you Glim”, Salamir says tipping his hat, unsure if the Gnome sees the gesture.
”We are very much in the business of information”, he adds, dropping 3 gold through the little window into Glim’s upraised palm.”But please, do come out, it’s hard to have a proper conversation through a door”.
Salamir, you look down and see five expert looking locks on the door, it looks extremely sturdy. The small hand grasps the three gold coins and pauses for a minute. You hear some voices in the background. You are able to pick out 2 female voices and 3 male voices (one of which is Glim). After a moment, a different set of eyes appear at the door and you hear a female gnome say, “My name is Yebe. We are very cautious here, ever since the goblins and that orc moved in a couple of months ago, we have been afraid, we created our display out there to keep them away.” She pauses for a moment, looking at everyone she can through the small opening.
“They have dug several traps, you must be careful in these caverns. They aren’t just goblins, the orc is their leader and we have seen some hobgoblins as well. The orc has stolen some gold from the mining company, we heard some of them talking about it. There is also a dwarf with the Orc (whose name apparently is Sawtooth, sounds beastly), he fell through the ceiling a couple of weeks ago.” At this point someone is speaking deeper in the background, she turns around and talks to them in a hushed voice, and then she turns back to you and says “We have lived here since the end of the Goblin wars. There is a passage to the left that leads outside, it leads to a tiered garden where we grow our vegetables (in the background a little voice shouts “Don’t steal em!”) and some difficult paths through the canyons for big folk like you. If you’re going to leave here probably best to go the way you came.” She pauses and then says “Up in the mine area where that dwarf was digging, there is the sacred burial place of Fivin Brevian, one of the Shadow Guardians. We have seen it, but we did not disturb it. Look, if you run into trouble with the goblins and the orc, you can stay in here with us, we’ll let you in for …. mmm… 10 gold should do it. You might have to squeeze to get in the door, but at least it would be safe if you need to hide. That’s about all I know. Good luck with them, if you could clear those goblins out of there that would be wonderful, but for now our little creation has been working quite well.”
"Oh come on guys! They need to know, not fair that they have lived here who knows how long and these freakin goblins come and take over the place." Belkaria steps up to the little door, "Yebe? I thought you'd like to know that I think we took care of most of the goblins, we know there is one outside this door that you all have scared the bejesus out of, his name is Tark, not a bad fella. And you don't have to worry about Sawtooth and his rats. Thank you for the information on the paths, but you all can relax now, I hope that helps. Could you please return the 3 pieces of gold back to my friend here? Oh, and would you happen to have a cart we could borrow?"
The eyes behind the door look at Javier and say, “The reward of a job well done. The satisfaction that you have eliminated some evil from the world.”
Salamir walks away and begins to look through the cavern, through the passageway to the east. As described it leads up to a an area where there is a tiered garden, but as to going down or joining other pathways, the size of the passageways are too small, perhaps large enough for a gnome bent over, but too small for you. You come back out into the main chamber.
Yebe looks up at Belkaria, a little started by the tiefling, and then says, “You people wrecked our floating monster. You were supposed to run away and leave it alone. This is .. compensation for expenses. I’m glad that you handled the goblins and we will check to see that it is true. As far as a cart, if you step outside to the east, there is a cart out there that we use to bring our vegetables back and forth, a wheelbarrow. You can use it if you want. We’ll call it even. We can fashion another. Good day to you. Good luck in youradventuring. Tell that goblin out there to clear out, and don’t come back.”
With that, the little door shuts. Salamir and Belkaria step back outside and see a cart behind a boulder on the way to the garden. It would help with being able to get the gold back to town. Dirak walks into the chamber finally, looking up at the strange burned creature on the wire overhead and says, “What happened here? Hey, by the way, can I walk back to town with you? They won’t believe it, I’d like to be there to tell the tale with you to the Sheriff and finally have a warm bed and goodbath. Should we head back?”
Hlin nods "Of course you can travel with us Dirak. Don't mind the singed puppet. lets get the gold and head back" Hlin looks around a bit and roughly grabs the cart and moves back towards the gold
Javier a bit embarrassed by his apparent attempt at haggling. “My apologies, I meant no harm with the suggestion of reward. Be well.” He turns to Dirak “so these yellow blotches you have. A result of the cave?” He begins to assist with loading up the cart
Salamir instructs Tark to untie the other goblin and to travel far away from the mines, impressing on him the displeasure that the group would feel were they to hear that Tark had turned once again to life of crime.
He then joins the others loading up the wheelbarrow and making his way back to town.
Tark is amazed by what you have accomplished, he walks warily into the room and looks at the "creature" hanging on a wire, his jaw is open. As you all finish talking to the gnomes, Tark nods to Salamir and says "No more of this for me! I want to be a farmer! Perhaps I can make my own farm, I don't want any more violence!" He says this with feeling, and you believe him. He heads back to Sawtooth's chamber and unties Uzz, who promptly gets up and runs off. He appears that he has learned a significant lesson as well.
After gathering your things and putting the chests on the wheelbarrow and wheel them out of the caverns. You head back to Glitter Creek, follow the road that you originally came in on with the wagons. You bring the miner's payroll chests back to Sherriff Redd and he beams at you, very appreciative of your efforts. With negotiation, in light of not only finding the payroll but also preventing future raids, he graciously decides to give you 150 gold (instead of the agreed upon 100 gold) for compensation and reward. Dirak is thankful for his life and as you eventually show him the bags of gold dust that you found under his chest, he takes two of them back, giving you the third to split among yourselves, and that is worth another 150 gold. He says for you to keep his cloak and hopes that it serves you well. He does ask for his brown hat back. After you point out the warts on his face, he will seek out someone to cast lesser restoration on him to help remove them.
Upon returning to Glitter Creek, some tell the tale of a beloved adventuring group that rid the Forbidden Caverns of the perils years ago. The group was called the Shadow Guardians and was led by a Ranger named Fivin Brevian. The Shadow Guardians were a collection of adventurers led by a Ranger and Druid that mostly worked in the shadows slowly eliminating threats in the wild. In addition to fighting in the goblin wars, the group had confronted a growing threat in the Phoenix Temple. The battle was won but Fivin was slain. Legend says that his brother and the rest of the Shadow Guardians built a tomb for him somewhere in the caverns. Fivin’s famous twin scimitars, Lightening and Flash were buried with him in hopes some worthy adventure would find them and carry on the oath of the Shadow Guardians. Sadly, his brother was slain years later far away. His ashes were reportedly to be carried into the caverns to be buried with his brother. As you come into the tavern, Garth wearing Flash and Lightening at his side, the locals look at you, murmuring, wondering if the Shadow Guardians have returned, reborn somehow.
Shortly we will begin the second part of our adventure, the Curse of the Raven, an Adventure in the Forbidden Caverns!
After the success with the mine in the Forbidden Caverns, your adventuring group returned to Greystone, once again guarding a caravan for Duke at Hawhammer Outfitters. Before you left Glitter Creek, the miners celebrated your success at clearing the area of the payroll bandits. The Blue Mountain Tavern was hopping with miners, farmers and town fold. Some older folks spoke of the Shadow Guardians and of Fivin. However, when an old decrepit Fritz hobbled into the tavern, he immediately recognized the twin blades, Lightening and Flash. He shouted, "Look, its Lightening and Flash .... the blades of the Shadow Guardians. They have returned!"
With this pronouncement, the tavern went hush. All eyes were on the adventurers. Not a sound was made for what was like an eternity. A woman broke the silence by saying, "Look, thewhite scabbard with emeralds ... it's true, it's really true!" The silence broke with a deafening roar of delight. Flagons were raised high, and toasts were made to good times to come.
Fritz sat down with you and told how he found the mine and retrieved a small fortune, and in the nick of time too. Goblins poured into the valley and found the cave systems to be an excellent home. The goblins chased Fritz out. It didn't matter, he had enough funds to set up a shop in town. He opened Hawhammer Outfitters and Feed. The Shadow Guardians eventually rid the area of goblins in the goblin wars, but Fritz was too old to mine and was doing well with the store, so he stayed there. Fritz said, "Eventually I sold the store to Duke and retired. However, I stayed in town. I had friends with the Shadow Guardians and eventually met Dirak. I sold him my map for 1 silver piece ... I just didn't need it anymore."

A wizard is never late, nor is he early, he arrives precisely when he means to.
Time passes. You decide to meet up one morning at the tavern in Greystone.
You are all sitting in the Golden Dragon's Tavern in Greystone, thinking back on the events in the recent past. You wonder what it all means. Are you really the Shadow Guardians now? The townsfolk sure think so. What would happen if they came back while you were claiming to be the group? Certainly, it wouldn't matter anyway, you DID rid the caverns of the goblins and Sawtooth the orc. There can't be any trouble now, so there isn't any need to be the Shadow Guardians.
The thought passes away like a breeze on a warm spring day. You continue to eat your meal and lift a flagon paid for by a job well done. You hear a scream, shouting and some scuffling from outside, and then the door bursts open. A small dragon flies through carrying a scroll. Inside your head you hear a voice say, "Jasper is the name, I have a message for you from Sherriff Redd. I would love to stay and tell a joke or two, but it seems folks around here are a bit put off by me, so I best be on my way."
He turns and wings out a window just before three brutes covered in horse manure bust in the door shouting, "Where the devil did that little sprite of a dragon get to ... I'll teach it a lesson, that trophy is going to hang from my wall."
The group looks around as patrons start to snicker and the group turns and leaves. You open the scroll, and it says,
Shadow Guardians,
Come to Glitter Creek at all due haste. Our cleric, Lophi Hammerstone has been kidnapped by a band of orcs. The orcs broke into the temple, raided the library for a few books and left with Lophi. Not only are we concerned for Lophi's safety, but also the safety and wellbeing of Glitter Creek. Lophi is the only healer in town. Please proceed to Glitter Creek as soon as you are able. I fear time is of the essence.
