Salamir watches Jasper deposit the note on the table, recognising the pseudo dragon immediately as Sheriff Redd’s.
He is taken aback a little though as he hears it speak in his mind. He covers his surprise though, and gives it a little salute to show understanding.
He chuckles along with everyone else as the brutes enter covered in manure, but makes no move. Jasper would easily outfox them.
He listens to the reading of the note whilst his fingers gently pluck at the strings of his lute. He isn’t playing a particular tune, just idly practising.
“It appears we are once again needed in Glitter Creek. I suppose as the newly crowned Shadow Guardians, it is our duty to respond. I would like to help, they are good people. What say you all?”, he says, still casually playing on.
Garth sits uncomfortably as his -- and everyone else's -- new status is announced. He does not want the recognition and definitely not the attention of the villagers and to carry the weight of their expectations. When Fritz finally sits down with them he turns to the old man, speaking quietly.
"Until last week I had never heard of the Shadow Guardians, and now you tell me I am one. That's a mighty fast promotion, by any measure."
He looks around at the delighted faces of the villagers and frowns before turning back to Fritz, "You say you knew them; maybe you could tell us about them -- who they were, how many there were, what they did...and how Fivin Brevian ended up dead and buried in the mine. And..." he glances at his companions, "...what happened to the others."
"I wouldn't want to go stepping on any toes, if you get what I mean."

Garth stares at the note, an amused expression on his face. "That's new: Orcs stealing books." He shakes his head and tosses the note back on the table, "At least kidnapping is an oldie but a goodie. Anyone remember this priest?"
Belkaria smiles as Jasper heads in and causes the ruckus. Man, she thinks, I’d love a pet like that. She smiles even broader as he speaks to them telepathically.
After it is read, she checks out the letter herself. “Well, of course we’re going to go help! We’re the newly dubbed Shadow Guardians! How could we not? But you’re right Garth, orcs stealing books? I wonder why they kidnapped the priest? Think they needed a healer? So many questions!!” She hops up at this, the excitement of the new adventure plain on her face, “I’m ready to head back to Glitter Creek when you guys are!”
Hearing Jasper in her head causes Hlin to look discomforted with it, but answers in her head. "Yes we will go"She quickly downs her flagon of ale and wolfs down her breakfast. Best eat. I don't know when I will get a decent meal again, besides dried rations. Hlin guffawed seeing the 3 brutes covered in manure.
To Garth she says. "Sorry I don't remember meeting Lophi, but I will come to her aid nonetheless. Now I wonder why take the books. I guess there is only one way to find out. Let's get ready to head out"
Javier nods and agrees with the group “the town needs us and I’m happy to oblige. We certainly didn’t meet this priest but faith leaders and healers are essentially to places like Glitter Creek…. As for the orcs, I’m sure there’s a logical explanation. Looking for a cure perhaps? Not all of them are unintelligent after all though I suppose someone could be in charge that isn’t an orc. Hmm” he begins to scribble notes in his book giving the group a smile when he’s done.
((Fritz knows of the general lore of the Shadow Guardians, but not specifics of how they passed or what happened to them. Carrying the recognized weapons of the leader of the Shadow Guardians and the way that the group carries themselves makes the townspeople feel that they have returned to them. Garth does not know Lophi, did not meet the cleric previously.))
Apparently, the little pseudodragon Jasper has been busy delivering messages. As you walk outside of the tavern, a man in boots walks up, looking you over, introduces himself as Ham, and says "Sherriff Redd has arranged some horses for you at the main stable, not a gift mind you, but on loan. He wants you there in Glitter Creek as soon as possible. Come to the stables after you have finished your business and we'll get you set up. He didn't want to wait for the return wagon to Glitter Creek. An odd little bitty dragon came bringing me a message about this..." He looks rather confused about the whole situation but determined to follow through with the request.

Hlin says "I thank you Ham for setting us up with horses." To her companions "Well I have no need for additional purchases so I will wait by the stables"
Hlin follows Ham back to the stables to get acquainted with some horses.
"I had wondered about the logistics of getting back to Glitter Creek quickly, it is good to hear Sheriff Redd has it all in hand", Salamir says adjusting the lute on his back to make a little more comfortable.
"Let me just change into some clothes more suited to travelling, and then I will meet you all at the stables", he adds, having learnt his lesson about wearing his finer clothes when adventuring.

Garth will continue to talk with Fritz to try to gather what he can about the Shadow Guardians -- whatever tidbits he has are more than we have.
(( Happy that as a result we can be deemed to 'know' basic info about them, and in the short term I would be interested in how many, how long ago, and were they all rangers? ))

The first thing Garth did upon arriving in town was to upgrade his equipment; when he arrives in the bar he is wearing new armour and a sturdy bandolier sporting numerous darts.
When the others finish responding he nods, "Aye. The last job paid well, so I'll at least listen politely to what the sheriff has to say."
He stands, seemingly ready to leave, his fresh suit of armour still chafing a little.
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
After gathering your things, you meet Ham at the stable and he has 5 horses ready for you to ride. After you mount up, you head out the now familiar road to Glitter Creek, 2 days travel from Greystone.

You camp the first night and all is quiet, you post watches but there are no goblin attacks this night. You arrive in Glitter Creek the next day and you are met by Sherriff Redd shortly after you arrive in town. He seems to be expecting you and alerted to your arrival, you see Jasper circling overhead. As he comes up to you huffing and puffing, he says "Shadow Guardians!" he says with a smile. "So glad you are here. Glad you listened to Jasper and didn't swat him away. We have quite a situation here. Some orcs crept into town at night and broke into the temple. We heard that they overcame Lophi, acolyte Jacob saw them and tried to confront them, but they knocked him out. He said they took a book from the library, a book about healing. They were seen heading out of town toward the Forbidden Caverns, carrying Lophi and the book. Since it's so late in the afternoon, evening coming on, I've reserved you a room at the Blue Mountain Inn. In the morning you can set off, I'll have some fresh horses for you to use and some supplies. Meet me at my office at 8 am. Do you have any questions? I'm sorry to interrupt your stay at Greystone, but we need you, the whole town needs your help again!" The Sherriff looks at you expectantly, once all questions are answered, he'll head back toward the jail and give you your privacy at the inn and tavern.

"Thank you for the horses and rooms Sheriff Redd. I wonder if these orcs needed a healer or was there some other purpose in taking Lophi"Hlin heads towards the Blue Mountain Inn dusting off the dirt that accumulated on her shield during the ride to Glitter Creek
“Good to see you again, Sheriff Redd”, Salamir says. “I do have a couple of questions. How many Orcs were seen exactly? And how did they make their escape? Were they on horses, did they have a cart? How well equipped were they? What sort of armour did they wear and what weapons did they carry?”, he asks listing off a series of questions.
”If we are to do this, it would be good to be well informed. I am sure you understand”.
”Also, you speak of us as the Shadow Guardians, does that mean you are expecting us to act from purely altruistic motives?”, he asks finally with a smile.
Garth is subdued at the start of the journey back to Glitter Creek. He frequently glances at the swords at his waist and, on the first evening as the group makes camp, he grumbles to his companions, "I ain't no hero, none of us are."
He chews slowly on his rations and shakes his head, "This won't end well: Heroes either die or have clay feet. That's the way of it. Damned if I want any part in either."
Despite his misgivings he continues on the journey with the the rest of the group. Whether he is driven by possible reward or a sense of debt to the previous owner of the swords, or some other factor, is unclear.
He listens to the questions of the others, snorting at the mention of altruism. "I ain't no hero," he repeats quietly. "But if we are to rescue this priest, you or this acolyte need to tell us about them and the book as well. Orcs aren't big readers in my experience, and when they capture people they ask for ransoms. So something else is going on."

Javier listens intently to Garth at camp “it’s about perception not action in my opinion. If the people see us as hero’s, that’s their prerogative… we go about our business as we know how and let the history books do the rest.” He points to his journal that he often writes in.
Upon hearing the Sheriff’s plea, he thinks for a moment. “Perhaps someone important to them is ill or there’s a plague of sorts… any trends leading up to this? Precious engagements with these orcs? Either way this is peculiar.”
Belkaria scoffs at Garth's remark on how none of them were, "Speak for yourself! I've been a hero all my life!" she says with a smile as they enjoy camp together. She wonders what they are going to face when they arrive back in Glitter Creek. As for the actual idea of being a hero, she faces that thought with crossed emotions.

Garth stares at the tiefling a moment then shrugs before turning to Javier, "It takes a strong mind not to crave the adulation of crowds..." for a moment he seems lost in thought, "...or fear their disdain. The threat of losing such attention can drive even the strongest to reckless action."
He draws a deep breath then continues, "I've no problem if people want to give us fancy names, but I'll not live in the shadows of heroes that noone can even recall properly. Five people who killed a lot of goblins: that's all we know. Who knows what they really were? I'm sure those that wrote the history liked 'em, and I don't give a fig for my place in history. All that matters to me is if I can live with my own choices day to day."
Hlin : The sheriff nods and says “It is odd, I have no idea why they took Lophi. They seemed rather purposeful according to Jacob.”
Salamir : “Jacob said there were six or seven of them, but it was hard for him to get a good count, they did not have mounts, a couple of them were really large and one of them threw Lophi over their shoulder like a sack of potatoes. They were wearing armor made out of hides, carrying great axes.” When mentioning a reward and motives, Redd looks at the ground, almost embarrassed, shuffling his feet. “We could work out something I’m sure, but I didn’t know who else to turn to, I thought of you when this happened.”
