That seems like something we might be able to do. Did you mine anything else down there, or only iron? Did this fog spread beyond the town? How long did it last?

"There are only iron veins within that mine. Nothing more. As for the fog, once the entire town was covered in it, it dissipated as quickly as it came. Based on my own knowledge, I do not believe that it has spread outside the town's boundaries, though some travelers came here already sick and they said they were struck by the fog from over a quarter of a mile away from our boundary."

You remember stories of people digging up old artifacts and then unleashing some sort of terrible curse or something when they dig it up. Perhaps this plague was caused by someone inadvertently digging an ancient artifact or relic?
So it spread a bit beyond the town, but probably not far from the sounds of it. And it dissipated after hitting the town limits or thereabouts? Did it all disappear at once, or more like fog lifting? What did the miner hit that triggered the fog?
Rosado "Aye boss, me sorry for interrupt, is this scallywag that has caused this bloody fog still alive? Me think that he could hide something from you boss"
Still leaning against the wall listening and watching... Maev gives the Mayor a smirk and suddenly starts to walk out of the room, "well you boys enjoy yourselves, sounds like you have things well in hand, I think its time this child of the forest headed out for greener pastures. I think I will pass and part ways with you all, see what is about in the next town over. I hear tell of some lucrative opportunities and the like to be had, not sure I want to work a dangerous mission reeking of dark arcane magic for the price of a common shield."
@Narstin: "I would assume it was gone when it had spread across its farthest distance, and then it slowly disappeared, with wisps gradually disappearing over the course of the day. We don't know what the miner had struck though. All we know is that he had hit a rockwall and then the fog came out of where he hit."
@Rosado: "I can assure you that whatever the miner did was by accident. We have extensively questioned him and it is almost apparent it was accidental."
@Maev: "It's a shame we couldn't come to a compromise miss. But I wish you all the best in your ventures. I understand that this request seems too much with such little pay, but it's all we can scrounge up with our remaining town budget."
@Fionn: From what you can see and tell, the mayor is telling the truth and is being honest.
Maev's hand on the door turns and smiles, "yeah sure, sorry for taking up your valuable time... and all... for future reference, not everything is cash and carry, I am sure if the town treasury is indeed lean on hard coin that it does not lack in other forms of barter... property and other goods... a piece of land, a 1% share in the iron mine you have had to close, a horse and wagon or such, etc. to sweeten the deal upon completion perhaps but what do I know I am a sweet poor lass with not a clue on how to conduct a business transaction."
Maev turns and looks at the Mayor a strong feeling that he bit that hook a bit too fast and hard for it to be at all legit, "that might sweeten the deal along with whatever we find in the mine that we can carry out, but of course we would want to see your mine's ledger book here and now to determine if there is any value left at all or if someone has run it to the ground and left it swimming in debt and this is not all a means over covering it up."She folds her arms over her chest... waiting then adds. "You know we really want to help but even such as us need to eat... fair deal or no deal."
@Narstin: "From what we can tell, everyone was struck with the same type of illness. The miners became just as sick as everyone, but the problems arose with those who were already ill. It would seem that if someone was already sick when the fog came, it amplified the symptoms."
Narstin nods. Definitely sounds magical. Could someone - the miner in question perhaps - lead us to where the incident occurred in the mine? If we can find the source, maybe we can find a way to reverse it. Have symptoms worsened over time?
Bayrith is writing down notes on the entire conversation as everyone is speaking. He does look up after Rosado's question with a puzzled look and says.
"I think it's a little late for that Rosado. If we were worried about catching it we should have taken precautions earlier before venturing deeper into the town." He writes a few more things down, nodding to himself as he does then continues. "Yes, if this malady is going to affect us soon, then I suggest we find a cure, or way to stop it if it is indeed magical as Narstin suggests."

That said, she walks out the door... whistling
The mayor perks a bit when you mention a share in the mine. He seems to think for a bit before he exclaims.
"What about a 10% share on the company that runs the mine?"
Maev turns and looks at the Mayor a strong feeling that he bit that hook a bit too fast and hard for it to be at all legit, "that might sweeten the deal along with whatever we find in the mine that we can carry out, but of course we would want to see your mine's ledger book here and now to determine if there is any value left at all or if someone has run it to the ground and left it swimming in debt and this is not all a means over covering it up." Has the sickness affected everyone equally? Were the miners affected stronger than people at the edges of town? Does everyone have the same symptoms?
Gives Maev a quick grin
looks skyward, "yes ok i will"
just speaks out to no one in particular "The lass speaks true he says, for tho the meek are blessed the protectors still need to eat."

Maev decides to call it a day and bids the others farewell leaving the mayor's office and the town...

Rosado is a bit concerned "do you know if there is some protection from this fog so we do not get ill?"
