Tamryn asks everyone to gather together about an hour after the debriefing, in the tent where they were debriefed.
Once (if) everyone has gathered, he starts to speak. "Earlier, when we were talking about our talents, we focused primarily on our martial talents. What we could do in a struggle. Now, I think, we must pull from our other talents. Our backgrounds and our...hobbies. Think about how that might work to our advantage in the scenario presented us. Kyrsa, for example, can change her appearance easily. Do any of you have experience with a disguise kit? Or with a illusory magic that might work as well? In spite of my poor performance at rope-climbing," he smiles ruefully, "I am somewhat experienced in infiltration and finding hidden things. Akyan also mentioned his talents in this arena, as well."
"I suspect that, for this particular mission, it would be helpful to divide into two teams. One to be the foreign investors to originally case the home, assessing security and looking for the most likely place where the scandalous materials will be found. The other to be the infiltration team, to sneak in and search for the materials, while our investors are distracting our host. The qualities we should look for in the first group are those who come from a wealthier or nobler background, who can give an air of superiority and noble arrogance. I, personally, think our dear Jhaartael would be perfect for this role, if he is interested. Perhaps with two others acting as his servants. For the second team, we should have those trained in stealth, used to light armor, and skilled at traps, locks, and investigation. Kyrsa's teleportation trick might come in particularly handy for that team. These are, of course, initial suggestions. If someone wants to act a part or mimic a cat's grace, you are likely welcome to do so. But I think we should talk teams and talents first, see what intel our handlers can provide, and then consider the specifics of the plan."
Akyan nods to the instructors then waits to see what the others are planning to do. When Tamryn asks to speak with everyone, he sits back down in the tent and listens to what he as to say.
"Yes, while I did a poor job of showing it, I do have experience when it comes to missions like the scenario we just finished. I'm more experienced with quietly breaking in and taking what I need than I am with infiltration. I have done a bit of infiltration, but never at anything like a fancy party. I do have some experience with a disguise kit, but even with a disguise, I don't tend to blend into that kind of setting." Leaning back in his chair he continues in a matter-of-fact tone of voice, "That pretty much sums up my background. I've been a thief for my entire life aside for some time spent as a stable hand."
"I agree that dividing our group into two teams is a good idea. I'd defiantly be better for the second team then the first team. I don't particularly care to mingle with that type of crowd even if they aren't bad people. Plus I do have experience with just about everything you just listed."
You may have noticed you are the only one on the team with actual military experience. I am looking to you to be a leader, an organizer, and someone who helps formulate an overall coherent battle plan for each mission. For now, this is informal, as you must still win the trust of your peers. But look for opportunities to build the team's morale, and demonstrate those skills you learned as a squad leader.
Kyrsa nods slowly, "I understand, and I am honored. I will not let you down."
Kyrsa tilts her head when she hears Tamryn's suggestion, "Time to get started then."
She turns her attention back to Aldara, "Thank you. For your praise and your criticisms. I look forward to what is to come." She nearly salutes before heading out, but stops herself before she actually does, smiling a little at herself.
Kyrsa enterst the tent promptly after the hour passes, and listens carefully to Tamryn's plan, and to Akyan's input as well. Once they finish speaking she says, "This is a good plan Tamryn. However, I must say that my teleportation is linked to the season I am currently wearing. In my current season, I can teleport a willing individual instead of myself. In the season I was wearing earlier, winter, I can induce fear on my opponent...sometimes. My other two seasons can allow me to burn a nearby enemy, or to...charm one, or two...for a short time." She says the last part hesitantly, as if she didn't really want to bring it up. "I chose my current season thinking that I could use it to get someone better at stealth where they need to be if the situation arises. It would have been very useful during our little window issue earlier. Also...the seasons can effect my moods...or my moods can determine the season I don. So, even though I've managed to get a decent hold on those...emotional changes... I have to keep them in mind as well for this mission. I would not want to wear winter to a party, it would dull the mood or draw unwanted attention to myself. Nor would I choose summer, as that one may heighten my aggression. Which leaves Spring or Autumn, and I am currently wearing spring." She pauses, "Looking at the situation, it may be more useful to change to Autumn, perhaps charming people, like what Jahaartael did to the guard earlier, would be more useful. I also will only be able to change once during the mission if that becomes necessary, so we may want to plan accordingly if this is something we want to put to use."
She pauses, shaking her head, "Anyways, back to the subject at hand. I would recommend not having me accompany the second team. I can use stealth when necessary, but it is not my strongest suit as you all saw during our last exercise. I may be capable of such missions, but I recognize that there are those among us that are better at it. That said, I think the best teams would be Jahaartael, and I with Mina, and then you, Akyan, and Lyndaran. Mina and Lyndaran could be interchangeable, as both of you seem competent at stealth, however, I feel like Mina will stick out too much if any of you were to get caught. Same goes for me of course, we are just to recognizable. This could be fixed if anyone is willing to dawn disguises, but I would prefer not to. I have found that elaborate disguises sometimes are worse than none at all. Nevertheless, we will want subtle disguises to fit in."
"The problem with this is that, as you may have noticed already, I am not really the...charismatic type. The military did a number on me there...This is why I would recommend putting Jahaartael with me, as he seems capable of mingling with the upper classes. As Tamryn has already pointed out, this is the most obvious role for him. He talks like a scholar, and clearly has some idea of how nobles are expected to behave, which could be useful when dealing with this businessman. In spite of my lack of charisma, I have had plenty of experience dealing with upper classes, and know how to behave at a party. Who knows, perhaps we can convince him to tell us where he's got the documents, or even show them to us."
She pauses again, "Perhaps it would even be beneficial to split into three groups, depending on the size of the manor. Jahaartael and me to mingle and gather intel, and two teams focused on stealth. This could be decided when we arrive at the scene, where we can determine if two teams for searching would be worthwhile. I would recommend all of us staying together for a short time at first, so we can get our bearings and establish ourselves as guests. All of us are expected to attend, so we all must make an appearance. Taking some time to mingle will also allow everyone to asses our surroundings--map out potential exits and hiding spots, as well as possible locations for our target documents."
She smiles, "Now though, I'm getting ahead of myself. Tamryn is right, we need to take some time to get to know each other. We need to be able to understand each other if we want to be able to understand each other's actions, both here and in the field. We should each take some time to share some things, and later we should discuss what our covers will be. What part each of us will play, and what our identities will be during the mission. Tamryn, I like the idea of having some of us take on the role of servants for Jahaartael, however, I think I would be better suited to play as his head guard--someone he trusts and who also holds some authority, thus giving me some freedom to interact without raising suspicions. ...enough from me though, forgive me if I seem forceful, sometimes I forget I am no longer a military commander. I would like to hear from everyone, both about the mission and about themselves."
When the notion of 'dear Jhaartael' leading the group to interface with the upper class was posed, his eyebrow raised, but he did not utter an objection.
He eventually leans back into his chair, folding his hands while gently fiddling with his ring.
"This - is - a good plan." He says slowly, sonorously.
"Whether two - or three - groups, we should come together. This will facilitate things when we inevitably need to communicate with each other."
"That telepathic link will also be helpful for synchronizing our efforts."
"Krysa, your suggestion of being captain of my guard is a good one. It would allow you to observe while we mingle. Having Mina in the first group would round us out - providing another point of attention. When attention is on one of us, the other two can observe. I also have a means to sense what another might be thinking, but I find it works best when I am observing them, not talking directly with them at the time. The trick, as I alluded to, will be communicating what information we gather to the other team. We may also wish to devise some subtle signals."
"As for the other group or groups, you are all most capable, yet I may be able to help improve your chances by making one of you invisible, should that be needed. It is still good to be stealthy when invisible - nothing gives one away faster than a bumped planter moving by itself."
"Lastly, I can provide two scrolls of disguise self which any of you may be free to try to use."At this he reaches into his doublet and withdraws two tightly scrolled pieces of parchment bound by a thin, but sturdy waxed cord, and lays them before the party. ((Up to DM to rule who may use such scrolls - DC is 11 Arcana check - the scrolls are written in the common language of all Tel-quessir - so all of the party should be able to read them.))
"I agree with Krysa's choice of teams, I also see the benefit of splitting into three groups if necessary. I also agree that we should figure out some way of communicating other than my telepathy. I can guarantee at least an four hours (multiple links one right after the other) maybe more depending on how long i can maintain it, but I don't think we should rely on it especially when I will have to pass the information along to everyone else. That said, I won't create a link until we are completely separated from each other."
"I can use a disguise kit, however a spell might be better. It tends to be a little hard to cover up my skin tone," He continues in a bitter voice, "...and I'm not sure how people will react to a drow walking into the party." He looks at Jhaartael, "I would say that Mina and I should be the ones to use the spells, since we would be the hardest to disguise without magic. Unless you really want Mina to stand out, then it would be better to use it on someone else. How long would the spell last?"
"If you are successful in using the scroll, the spell will last for an hour. If we think it will take us longer, then those wishing to disguise themselves may wish to seek a more mundane solution. As to whether or not people react adversely to you Akyan, I cannot say. Perhaps Aldara has more information on the local disposition? It is possible that you will come off more as a curiosity than a threat. If that is the case, then there may be advantage to making a bit of a show of our entrance... with our varied lineages, the younger races are likely to find our retinue rather exotic."
"I would say to save the scrolls," Kyrsa speaks up. "It may be a good idea to use them in a tight situation, or to gain entrance to a specific area. They can be used to impersonate servants or some other individual." She nods to Akyan, "It would be a good idea to speak to Aldara. I have a feeling that you will be alright, and Jahaartael has a point. However, I'm not sure we want to bring to much attention to ourselves. If everyone is looking at us because we are...exotic...it will be harder for us to slip away to search for our mark. This is something we may have to determine upon arrival, keeping those of us who hold the interest of the crowd as a distraction while sending those who are ignored out to search."
"I'm not sure what's worse," Akyan grumbles. He does not like where this is going. He doesn't being a center of attention. "If you want to save the scrolls, that's fine. They might come in handy for a more dangerous mission. However, I DON'T want to be used as a show pony."
Tamryn says, "We have not yet achieved the level of urgency that might require us to adopt roles we would rather not. I believe that Akyan is better suited to be on the infiltration team at the moment and I think Kyrsa and Mina can fulfill the roles of man at arms and servent successfully. So, unless either Mina or Lyndaran objects, we have our teams."
"I have been thinking about how to get access to the place where the documents are kept safe. I think I have a solution. Jhaartael, would you mind terribly portraying your investor as paranoid? Or, it might be better for Kyrsa to be the paranoid one, a captain of the guard might demand to know the security features if they are concerned about threats or spies. Our investor might have secret documents that he would like stored away until his business is conducted. Our businessman, if he suspects nothing, will likely be eager to please his potential investor, looking to impress him with his formidable security. You might even suggest that your other servant is a suspected plant and thereby keep security's eyes focused there. Our goal here is misdirection. We always want him looking at the specific people and locations we have chosen. Of course, with more intel, this plan might prove impossible, but I think it is enough to get us thinking of how to infiltrate and distract our target since teams seem to be delineated."
"Hmmm..." Jhaartael knits his brows "Yes, I think I can do that... a bit of a foppish investor, being 'cared for' by his security. That could gain their confidence or at least lower their concerns. I think making Mina out to be suspect might be overplaying it a bit though."
At the same time he almost absentmindedly palms the two scrolls and they disappear once again into his doublet.
Turning to Akyan, "I agree, I think your skills as infiltrator are well suited. At the same time, we need to think about how to get all the pieces onto the board naturally. Given that we are all coming as part of an investment venture, is it so odd to say that our diversity is a representation of the breadth of the scope of our venture? Each could be a liaison to some wing of our fortune. If they are not wary of drow in general, I could even represent Akyan as a representative to the Underdark or even, more correctly," he says smiling at Akyan, "a newly discovered resurgence of the Ssri-tel-quessir."
He turns back to Mina, "I am less comfortable with you playing a servant, but perhaps as a member of my business and companion for the evening. This will free you up to mingle and speak more freely with others. As I mentioned, one of us three should always be able to attract attention while the other two observe."
"Now that I am thinking about it, it might behoove me to prepare Detect Magic, so that we can detect any potential magical security easily. Either that, or I perform the ritual right before entering the party and use the first 10 minutes to look around."
Akyan gives an internal sigh of relief when Tamryn states that he is better fit for the infiltration team. He agrees that a paranoid investor would be beneficial and that either Jhaartael or Kyrsa would fit the bill, but he also feels that having Mina be a suspect would be overplaying it. At the mention of him being some sort of representative, Akyan looks a little surprised. He doesn't like the idea of representing the Underdark, even as a false identity. While he didn't remember anything about it, he knew enough to know he didn't want anything to do with it. He didn't want to give anyone false impressions of the place. Sure, not all drow were bad, his brother was a prime example, but the one other drow he had ever seen had left him with a memory he would never forget.
Shaking the image from his mind, he thinks about the word "Ssri-tel-quessir." The High elf had called him that earlier, and he remembered Elran mentioning it before, but never explained exactly what it meant. He had always assumed that it was just another, perhaps more formal, name for drow. However, given the context of how Jhaartael used it, he knew it has to mean more than just that. Even so, he didn't want the high elf to know just how little he knows about the history of his race, not yet anyway. He wasn't sure how he felt about being a "newly discovered" Ssri-tel-quessir. It sounded like the High elf considered him to be some rare type specimen that needed to be studied. If that was the case....he'd think about that later. He needed to focus on the task at hand.
Looking at Jhaartael, Akyan responds slowly, "If they are not wary of my kind, I suppose I could represent the Ssri-tel-quessir. If you think it's necessary."
"I would say to keep the scrolls handy, but not use them. Perhaps give one to Akyan and one to Tamryn, that way if they need to they can impersonate a servant. This would come in handy if they need to go poking around in areas that are 'out of bounds' to party goers." Kyrsa crosses her arms, thinking, "I like your plan Tamryn, it is very similar to what I was going to suggest. Misdirection will be our best friend. However, I must agree with Jahaartael that making one of our own out to be a plant is overdoing it, and potentially risky. Instead, we could perhaps allude to someone else being a spy, or another group preparing to infiltrate. This could go along with having Jahaartael pretending to be paranoid. Perhaps he heard rumors about someone infiltrating the party, and is afraid for his own safety. On the other hand, we must keep in mind our roles there--are we really people with enough authority or connections to know about such a plot?"
She nods to Jahaarteal and looks to Mina, "I also do not think you should be a servant. Rather, I think Tamryn and Lyndaran might be better suited for that role. They will have the easiest time blending in, and it would also give them an opportunity to slip away. Additionally, servants will say a lot behind their master's backs. They might be able to learn something from our businessman's servants."
"A spell that allows you to detect magic might prove useful," she says to Jahaartael.
She ponders in silence for a moment, "Perhaps I should don summer. It would make more sense for a captain of the guard to wear that season rather than spring or autumn. But would it be as useful? Anyone familiar with my people would know what the seasons mean, so portraying myself as a stoic leader while wearing the wrong season would scream liar. Though, if I make the change ahead of time, I can always switch to a more useful season mid mission. It would be annoying, but I can always come up with an excuse."
(Was waiting on Mina and Lyndaran, but we'll just say they agree to whatever plan the rest of you come up with).
You are all quite mentally exhausted, having been up ever since your early morning warehouse encounter, so you retire to your quarters early. The barracks are not luxurious, but they are comfortable, if slightly lacking in privacy. You have a quiet space to do your meditation, and you all receive the benefits of a long rest.
Just before 5 AM those of you who choose to do so assemble in the courtyard. Aldara is there waiting for you, along with a high elf dressed in somewhat foppish attire. She introduces him as "Percival" the head of security for the camp, and he bows extravagantly. Once again, your physical training begins with a 30 minute run, followed by some practice with climbing and balance. The high elf then takes over.
"Percy has been informed that you need some help moving quietly. Percy will show you how this is done, please pay attention." (Yes, he is speaking of himself in the third person). Although you are all looking right at him, somehow your attentions are distracted or your minds wander or... something, but you realize with a start that the high elf is no longer in front of you. You next hear his voice coming from behind you, and your necks all swivel in unison to note that Percival, who is dressed in bright colors, with ruffles at the neck, baggy breeches and even a showy walking cane, has somehow circled completely around your party without anyone seeing him. Even the rogues among you are puzzled at how he accomplished this. Over the next two hours, Percy gives some individualized training to improve your ability to misdirect others' attention in order to disguise your movements.
(If you choose to participate in the training, make either an Intelligence or a Dexterity ability check, DC 10. If successful:
If you were not previously proficient in Stealth, from here out you may add one-half of your proficiency bonus to Stealth checks, rounded down.
If you were previously proficient in Stealth, you gain a permanent +1 to Stealth Skill checks.)
After a break for a morning meal, you file into the classroom once more, and are greeted again by the ancient visage of Brother Cephas. "Ah, you seem to have all survived your first day. But there is a new face," he here looks at Lyndaran, inviting him to introduce himself. "Welcome."
"Today we will continue to explore what it means to serve or champion 'the good'. If you are faced with a difficult choice, what principles do you apply to determine which choice is 'evil' or which choice is 'more good'? One theory that has been taught is that an action is right insofar as it promotes happiness, and that the greatest happiness of the greatest number should be the guiding principle of conduct. Of course, this approach has ramifications.
"Please discuss the following scenario. Remember that actions, or choosing not to act, not only affect others, but yourselves as well. Please consider how you personally would change depending on how you would resolve the following:
"As an incidental finding in an information-gathering mission, you discover plausible evidence that a coup against the local baroness is imminent. You know the lady, and she is kind and merciful to her subjects, and as aristocrats go, is really among the best you have known. However, she also believes zealously in her divine right to govern, and in the past has executed those who have plotted her ouster. The conspirators on the other hand believe zealously that aristocracy is inherently corrupt and that violence is justified in order to bring about an egalitarian society, where there are no 'haves' and 'have-nots'. They believe they are serving a greater good by overthrowing this benevolent tyrant and restoring the people's right to govern themselves. It is reasonable to think that in the long run, the people will prosper more under self-rule than under the heavy hand of a lord.
"There is not time to bring all parties to a negotiating table. Either you reveal the plot to the baroness, or you allow it to proceed without your interference. You also do not have time to infiltrate the conspiracy yourselves, as you have another important mission that cannot be delayed. Either way will have consequences on all parties, yourselves included. How would you proceed? What if you did not personally know the baroness- does that change your approach?"
(Wow. You guys are so good!! I’ve been reading and trying to catch up, but gotta hit the hay now. I’m in the last page and will catch up tomorrow! And then I should be back to normal, sorry for the delay!)
When introduced to Percival, Akyan raises an eyebrow at him. "I certainly hope they don't make me wear anything like that." He thinks, "He looks, and sounds, ridiculous." When Percy disappears and reappears behind them, his opinion of the elf changes. He must learn how to do that.

Upon successfully learning the skill, Akyan feels a bit of his self pride return. He needed it after what happened the previous day.

Akyan ponders the scenario. He personally believes that the people should have the right to rule themselves. He isn't apposed to a leader, as long as they are willing to listen to their subjects. He also believed in giving evil-doers exactly what they deserved. However, that does not always mean death. Not to mention wanting to overthrow a ruler was not necessarily evil if done correctly.
"If the people will be able to prosper under self rule, I would allow the revolution to occur. While the ruler may be fair most of the time, her iron rule will eventually result in innocent blood being spilled. Whether, through execution or during a skirmish. If possible, I would try to convince the people not to kill her, and to simply de-throne her."

Tamryn arrives right on time and his good cheer appears to have returned as well. After the session with Percival, he asks Percy about his tailor, clearly impressed with both his talents and his fashion. He also asks if Percival would be willing to loan them some clothes for the mission later that day.

Upon the morning calisthenics muster, Jhaartael does his best to follow the subtle movements of Percy, impressed in his show of stealth and control.

After the meal, Jhaartael ponders the situation in silence. Only when called upon does he offer the fruit of these thoughts.
"No form of government is inherently immune to abuse or corruption. A mob can be just as tyrannical as a single ruler. However, there is the consideration that a sitting government or ruler who is doing their best to rule has preeminence against violent opposition. However well intentioned, the coup is led by revolutionaries and traitors, and as such, criminals against order. The ruler is not posing an imminent threat to any one, while the revolutionaries are planning to shed blood. Further, as history has shown, revolutions baptised in blood rarely succeed in bringing peace until the sun shines red many days upon sanguine rivers. Therefore, I would inform the ruler of the potential threat."
Tamryn asks everyone to gather together about an hour after the debriefing, in the tent where they were debriefed.
Once (if) everyone has gathered, he starts to speak. "Earlier, when we were talking about our talents, we focused primarily on our martial talents. What we could do in a struggle.
Jhaartael quietly listens to the plans forming.
"Lastly, I can provide two scrolls of disguise self which any of you may be free to try to use." At this he reaches into his doublet and withdraws two tightly scrolled pieces of parchment bound by a thin, but sturdy waxed cord, and lays them before the party.

Eryndor - Red Dead Annihilation | GM - Volo's Trade Franchise - PF2e Adventures set in the Forgotten Realms

Please consider how you personally would change depending on how you would resolve the following:"As an incidental finding in an information-gathering mission, you discover plausible evidence that a coup against the local baroness is imminent.
(No worries Mina! Glad to have you back!)

Ever punctual, Kyrsa arrives early at the courtyard. Though slightly confused at Percival's attire, she is impressed by his show of stealth.

Tamryn arrives right on time and his good cheer appears to have returned as well. After the session with Percival, he asks Percy about his tailor, clearly impressed with both his talents and his fashion. He also asks if Percival would be willing to loan them some clothes for the mission later that day.
