Nyral waits a bit so they aren't seen together. Then the drow moves to exit through the trapdoor too. He struggles a bit being one armed on a ladder but a combination of determination to preserve his magic and mage hand sees him through it as he makes a return to his room through some secret doors. He notices that his companions are gone from the dining area and he sighs wishing they were there for backup. He considers how much he wants to wake a vampire on his own. He was hoping Truador or Inquisitive would accompany him but instead he's on his own. He remembered their next destination was the library. He has other tools at his disposal though and he was quite skilled at working on his own. Nyral thinks on it a bit and shakes his head. He will use this time wisely though. He tries to keep it a secret that he can spy on folks. It makes them nervous when they find out so while in the privacy in his room he sits down in the bath to clean up a bit but his actual intension is to cast a spell called clairvoyance. It allows him to view and see areas that he isn't in. Anything within a mile of his current position is fair game. Behind doors, in rooms, its all open to him, he only needs to have a location in mind. For this cast he is going to spy on a room he expects will have something going on and at the least will be checked off his list of locations to spy on. The mayor's office. He figures that right after lunch will be some kind of important meeting and he wanted to know what the mayor is working on. Ideally he is targeting his spell to be right above the mayor's desk so they can read any documents on the top as well as easily see who's there and hear their conversation.
For a few seconds, it feels like your skull is going to crack under the increasing pressure. But as quickly as it came, it leaves. The book seems to putter and sigh, leaflets of paper shifting by themselves. Ink reluctantly starts bleeding through the pages and leather on the book, forming words that weren't there before on its covers and pages. The first page is a Table of Contents:
Spells: An Overview; Schools of Magic; Components; Magic Relics; Magic Alterations; Creating New Spells; Final Word.

Looking into the room, you see that the Mayor is alone in his office. He's got a large stack of what looks like letters next to him. He's reading one of them. You try to read the letters that are visible, and while you miss a few words or a sentence or two from the distance, it's clear the letters are all complaints regarding the carnival and the recent deaths.

Giving her forehead a brief rub, Zanibi again takes a look at the book. Shaking her head, trying to forget the huge amount of pressure she'd felt in her head, she cautiously turns the pages. She first wants to scan the Schools of Magic section, hoping perhaps it might list something unusual. She doesn't hold out much hope though for that. She skims through the rest until she gets to the Magic Alterations part. From there she spends a bit more time looking through the text, although still trying to go through it quickly.
Seeing that the mayor is reading letters Nyral will continue to look with vision but if someone walks in he will switch to listening after viewing them. He will be checking what the letters actually say about the carnival. He's curious what kind of complaints are being filed against the carnival in general. What people might be saying that is of interest about the murders. He suspects most is useless but he will check. The spell doesn't last incredibly long and after it's duration and he gathers whatever intel he could he will clean up then get ready to head to the library to meet with the others.

Standing behind Zanibi, looking over his trusted associates shoulder, Inquisitive curiously studied the magical book with the ink forming words as he read them. Investigation: 9
For the sake of time, you both don't read all of the information on the page or absorb it as well as you normally would. The chapter on Schools of Magic essentially details the eight main schools of magic, where they come from, and some common spells and how to cast them. While this may or may not be new information for you, Inquisitive, Zanibi, you know all of this stuff already, so you move on to the Magic Alterations chapter. The book straightens out its first page, by itself, which has been dog-eared, as you begin to skim the text. You have never seen anything like this in your studies or travels. The book is suggesting that it's possible to cast other kinds of spells by modifying or combining existing spells and schools of magic, but they're incredibly hard to do and have a great chance of backfiring---the book warns that the deaths of the caster or others nearby are common with unexperienced mages trying their own unique spells. The chapter ends with this warning.
Zanibi:
(I have no clue if DnD lore actually explains where magic comes from, or why there are 8 schools, so I'm just gonna spitball this a little here with some homebrew! Time for a lore dump, I guess.
Esseintially, magic is a result of spellcasters being able to reach through itty-bitty tears in spacetime that connect two different planes of reality. These planes of reality are all connected to the material plane in some way shape or form, but others are easier to get to than others. Spells are essentially what comes out of those tears, and spell slots represent the energy a spellcaster needs to reach through the tears without harm. Different realities follow different rules of existence, but as far as you know they all follow the same eight kinds of laws of existence, which are the eight schools of magic. For example, the Wish spell comes from a reality where it's possible to wish things into existence, and it follows the Laws of Conjuration, but it's incredibly hard to reach that reality. Or take the Mold Earth spell, where you can reach into a reality where people can mold earth, and it follows the Laws of Transmutation. It's easier to reach than the Wish dimension. I hope that makes sense. Because you're the only wizard, and the only one that's studied magic instead of inheriting it or asking for it, you're the only one that should know this. Let me know if you've got questions.)

For the rest of the spell's duration, no one else comes in. Actually, after a sigh so big you can hear the weight of it without sound, the Mayor leaves the room.
Now, you get a clearer view of the papers on his desk.
"Mayor Legash," one reads, "I've been telling you, sir, that these carnies are dangerous! Persessing our folk, killing us like chikens! You gotta kick them out, throw them out. Marvin'd have more sense than you.
Best wishes, Kidra." The handwriting is scratchy and irregular.
"Mr Lagash," another one says, in what looks like thick crayon, "I love the cirkus and its so much fun thank you. Mom says its danjeros but I want to know if she is right. Okay thank you Mr Lagash have a good day love Zinlar"
The next one was the paper the Mayor was holding. "Dear Mayor Lagash,
I've heard of people getting sick around town, and my husband just woke up today with a bad cough. I'm taking him to the doctor's in Pisor tomorrow. Hopefully it's just a common cold, but I was wondering if you're taking any steps to ensure the health and safety of the town? I'd think that a quarantine would be appropriate if it gets any worse. Could you let me know what your plan is?
Thank you.
Sincerely, A. Nira"
The rest of the letters are either completely or partially obscured from view.
As he finished reading, Inquisitive curiously glanced down at his gnome companion. "Perhaps we can borrow the book, this is a library after all." He said with a quick smile, ready to head back to the Lazy Peacock to collect Nyral before proceeding to the Carnival.
Zanibi nods to Inquisitive. "Yes, let's find Josias and see about checking out the book. It does have some interesting information." Once she finds the librarian, she asks, "You said nobody has checked this book out for some time? If you could share the information, I would be interested to know who had. But we would like to check it out now. What do we need to do?"
(Woo! I'm back. Good thing Truador wasn't doing anything important.)
Truador patiently waits for his companions to finish checking out the book before following them back to Nyral. As they walk he asks, "I assume you thought this book might be useful? What information were you able to find in it?"
"Oh, that was before I started working. Years ago. A few people have come and took a glance at it, but a majority pass out of drop the book and never come back. You... you can probably guess why." Josias leads you over to the front desk, where he gives you two small cards. He tells you to put your information on one, which he takes, and to put the name of the book, the date checked out, and the date it should be returned by on the other, which he sticks into the book and hands it to you. The return-by date isn't for another two week, and the harengon tells you to come back with both the card and the book when you're ready. "I'm sure you know this already, but don't let anyone else open the book. Unless you really trust them, that is. Though they haven't come in years, Tare---the other librarian---has told me about dangerous people that have gone looking for that book." He sits back in the chair with a thump. "Anyways, if you need anything else, I'll be right here. Library closes in an hour, at sundown, but I'll be here tomorrow again at sunup. Have a good day, gentlemen."

Once Zanibi fills out the card and gets the book, she carefully sticks it into her pack. "Any way to make sure the book doesn't run off on me?" she asks Josias. "I'd hate to lose it!"
"Keep it in a bag or a box. It seems to have some sort of tendency to sometimes appear in places that it has no access to, or escape the boxes we put it in, but that's once a month, maybe. If you keep it somewhere safe, or even just in a room with a door, it should be okay."

"Yes, I suppose that weird book might help us understand the coachmare spell you identified Zanibi."Inquisitive said and nodded as Josias left. "We should head over to the Lazy Peacock to collect Nyral before venturing forth to that mysterious carnival." The tiefling then said with a wry smile, checking that Truador and Marvin was with him before turning to leave for the Inn.
When you arrive at The Lazy Peacock, you notice the sun starting to descend on the horizon. It will be night soon. Upon arrival, Marvin mentions something about having to tend to his lavender crop, and says goodbye for the night. You bid him adieu, and walk into the inn. The tavern floor of the building is vacant, except for a few of the black-clad people you saw last night. Nyral is nowhere in sight, and Maggie has been replaced by Alisa. Otherwise, the tavern is empty.
