Gewyn opens his eyes and turns to look at Elthana. "N-not your fault." He then looks at Vin by his side. "This was... my fault. I'm sorry. I saw it right at the start, but I froze up. I couldn't move. Couldn't speak. Because of my hesitation, it was able to wreak havoc in my form while I could do naught but watch."
A tear falls down his cheek as the adrenaline and emotions of the battle begin to fade. "I don't belong here," he whispers to Vin. "I bring music. I deal in joy. Not in life and death. Not in... this. Nef is right about me." Gewyn sits up and wipes his eyes, taking a deep, shuddering breath. Then he composes himself, claps Vin on the shoulder, and says "Thank you, Vin. You saved me." He touches a finger to the gash on his face and then holds the finger before his face to inspect the mostly dried blood. "I'll be alright. I think Elthana's need is greater than my own."
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
Neferox finishes making their monument to gore and violence by placing the head of the mangled notdeer on top of whatever remained of it's body. She ate a few important looking bits to make sure it didn't just regenerate as she did so. As Sam forces up to her she stares right back at the him not even flinching as she growls and quite obviously says something. Vin looks up from Gewyn and over to her and Sam and suddenly looks very nervous as he says "Right, just a moment Nef." The young man looks back at Gewyn as the stare down between Nef and Sam continues. Nef seemingly waiting for Vin to translate. Vin meanwhile replies to Gewyn saying "I like your music Gewyn. This stuff is scary and... hard... and I thought I knew what it was like to adventure but... its nothing like what I thought. I'm glad I saved you and I think... we would all like some music to lighten things up." Vin looks at Elthana as Gewyn points them out and Vin says "Oh right! Elthana come here I'll treat that. Sorry, I guess I'm kind of oblivious." Vin will offer to use the healing ointment again on Elthana if she wants it for healing her for 11.
After healing Elthana Vin says "I... got to translate... she sounds really mad... uuuhh." Vin doesn't look happy about what's to come and walks over to the pair Vin tries to lighten the mood saying "Hey Sam. That was really scary. I'm glad we are all okay." Nef gives a small huff and Vin flinches at that a bit as they relay "Neferox says, 'I will attack anyone that tries to harm Vin. Controlled or otherwise I will not stand by and let him be harmed. If you want to fight over me protecting him then we can fight when he is safe.' ummm... that's what she wanted me to say. Look, I mean... it was tense she did tell me to heal the real Gewyn."
Muir gets up from checking out the carnage left behind. He looks at Gewyn with a raised eyebrow before a different scent catches his nose. He turns his attention to Vin and Nef and watches their interaction curiously. Muir leans against a tree and waits for the group to decide their next step.
After hearing the translation Sam looks from Neferox to Bin, then to Neferox again… then finally back to Vin. Sam starts as if he is going to say something but then breaks into uproarious laughter instead. Each time Sam seems to be about finished laughing he’ll look at someone else and start up again…
“… your look when you saw yourself,” he makes out between bouts of laughter.
“…you just took off running!” he reminds, bending over trying to regain his breath.
“…deer and panther and dogs, oh my!” He proclaims around another burst.
Sam does eventually compose himself though perhaps not before some begin to worry about him. He shrugs it off however and shakes his head.
“Kid,” he says with some seriousness once he can. “Your dog is a fool. A shortsighted fool. She knew Gewyn was controlled but attacked to kill anyway? As stupid as chewing off a leg to get out of a trap when you could just ask your friends to do it…”
“Friends. Allies. Family… If this Neferox wanted you safe that is what she’d want for you. They’re either a fool or they don’t care about you being safe.., they just want you for themself. Think on it…” Sam finishes, looking from one to the other. “Both of ya.”
“And where is that music?” Sam calls out to Gewyn. “We could all be doing with a little joy so hurry up with the bringing, eh?”
“Truth, rather you at my back than that mutt,” Sam softly confides to Gewyn when he can with some privacy. “You came through when needed and struck at the heart of the problem, not just lashed out unthinking. We all have our talents, eh? Don’t count on it being just fighting to get us through this… we need joy and music and brains as well.”
—-
“I think a rest is called for,” Sam says when he senses everyone finally has their wits back about them. “But perhaps not here? Let’s at least move on a ways so we don’t have the stench of battle soaking the air, eh?”
Muir who had been leaning against a tree listening, takes out a pipe stuff it with some calming plants, and begins to smoke it. He decides he should speak "Would anyone like a puff puff? No? Well let me say this....You do not know me, nor do I know any of you. What I do know is Sam's words ring true....Not everything is as it seems within our party and these woods.... we should tread carefully. The clearing smells of death and decay, but not recent. I would like to take a look and determine if it is safe for the villagers to move through this area before we return. We could be leading them to certain death....best to be sure.
Iver takes up the offer of something to calm his nerves, "what's the plan from here? I want to get back as soon as possible but it looks like we'll lose the light completely before we return anyway. Some of you look worse for wear, I'll help Muir here secure a perimeter." He takes out a torch and lights it, the light above the tree tops is next to non existent and stars begin to shine down, the lack of clouds in the sky are a telling sign of a freezing night to come.
“We came to hunt that thing, no? So mission accomplished. I say we move like a hundred yards away to be free from the stench, rest up and hour or so, then make back to camp. Moving will help keep us warm anyway,” Sam proposes.
Gewyn bows his head in appreciation at Vin's kindness. "I won't lie, it's a little comforting to know I'm not the only one who didn't know what he was getting into. And yeah, I think I can swing a bit of victory music. I just need a moment to clean off."
He finally relaxes his white knuckled grip on his knives and lets them fall to the grass as he turns over his blood drenched hands. He moves to wipe his hands off on the grass, but quickly realizes that would hardly be an improvement. He rises to his feet to find a gore-free patch of grass and stumbles off. Finding a leafy tree, he starts wiping until there is just sticky film of mostly dried blood left. He looks down at his clothes to see them spattered with more of the not-deer's blood. "Gods what a mess I am."
He hears Sam call out for music and calls back, "Just give me a minute to finish cleaning up!"
He pulls out his hand mirror to inspect his overall appearance and nearly drops it when the sight of his face reminds him of the large gash and broken nose. He touches it gingerly and winces. He hurries back over to the group and approaches Sam, saying "No offense, but you seem like the kind of fellow who's had to set a broken nose or two in the past. Think you can help me out here?"He points to his face. "I'd ask Elthana, but I think she's feeling a little guilty about being the one to break it in the first place. Just... It won't hurt too bad, right?"
After hearing Sam's encouraging words, Gewyn says "Thanks. That's kind of you to say,"but is otherwise rather quiet. Deep in thought.
When Muir finishes speaking to the group, Gewyn walks over and says "We may not know each other, but if that offer of your pipe was earnest, I wouldn't need much more to call you friend right about now." A bit of the tremor has left his body, and his tone starts slowly regaining its light cordial tone lilt.
As the perimeter is secured and camp set up, he remains true to his word and begins playing on his bird pipes. A vibrant, energetic song that dips into moments of tension and suspense to represent the wicked foe they've faced, but never for long enough to darken the atmosphere before rising back up into triumph.
As a few members of the group look around the clearing, and Sam takes a quick look from his position.
They hear gewyn start playing a joyous tune as they are busy finding nothing. Elthana having treetop vantage over everyone else does however find something, to the back of the clearing as she jumps to the top of one tree, something weighty counter balances her and she loses balance for a second, looking around as to what is wrong with this tree, she finds a darkened outline resembling a humanoid at the top of the tree.
One leg is missing, both eyes are missing and the body is laying, back bent the wrong way, impaled through the center of the torso from back to front on a tree top. Elthana recognises the face, the remains of Walker hanging in front of her, the guard who has helped escort the majority of the group toward Hokum for over a week.
At Elthana's call Muir and Vin come to the base of the tree she is atop, they find bits of marbled legion armour at the bottom, having fallen from the body above.
Neferox just huffs and walks away from Sam as she begins to look around the nest of the not-deer. This leaves Vin standing awkwardly with Sam as they look up at them and say "You're wrong. She wants me happy... I just... it's complicated." There is a very complex set of emotions there as they reply and then Vin walks off to sit away from the carnage so that he can listen to Gewyn play their music. Vin is quite injured and is covered in bruises so when he sits down he flinches a bit but seems to enjoy Gewyn's performance. When Elthana calls him and Muir over he gets up with a bit of difficulty as he winces in pain then makes his way over to her. "Hey, Elthana. What's up?" he smiles at the corny pun.
At first Vin only notices the familiar armor but seeing it makes them look around until ultimately they notice Walker. Vin looks horrified at the sight and seems like he is going to be sick as some tears begin to form in his eyes. He closes his eyes and tries to hide it as he leaves the area quickly. He avoids everyone, not hiding or leaving sight but goes to the clear opposite side of the clearing and just sits on the ground his back against a tree as he holds his knees in his arms and tucks his head so that he can't be seen crying. Neferox seems to pick up almost instantly on Vin's extreme emotions and stops what she is doing and goes over to him and curls up on his side leaning against him for comfort. The two sit in the shadow of a tree away from others.
As Vin runs off, Elthana looks to Muir, "I am going to cut him down. Let the others know, this was one of our guides. He deserves a proper burial." She takes out her dagger, gingerly climbs up a bit more so she can get to the branch that is impaling the man through his center. Securing herself in the tree, she starts sawing through. It takes a couple minutes, but as she gets to the end, she takes hold of the man with her other hand so he doesn't cascade down.
She dislodges the man with 2 foot of branch still stuck through his torso. She awkwardly sets him over her shoulder and nimbly jumps to the large tree next to the one she is in. She adjusts Walker again as she is glad he was not a large man, but still very uncomfortable having him over her shoulders. Then climbs down from there, laying him gently on the ground.
Muir heads to the others and tells them what Waltham’s found. “She had your guide. He was impaled on a tree up there. I fear that he is not the only one…..” Muir pauses and comes to a sad realization “should we look for more? There’s a strong smell that is probably coming from more than just one person”
Gewyn, has gotten as comfortable as he can sitting against a tree who's roots form a little hollow. He is approaching the climax of his song, starting to seem more and more like his old self. When Muir shares the news, however, the music halts abruptly as Gewyn tosses his pipes to the ground between his feet. He rests his face in his hand for a second before brushing his fingers back through his hair.
*thunk* He rests his head back against the tree, looking up, and then slowly reaches for his pipes again. He brushes them off, inspects them for damage, and then presses them against pursed lips, though he does not start playing right away. Instead he looks blankly ahead, a man with so many thoughts that he finds himself unable to think.
Then Sam and Vin's words come back to him and shake him from his fog. That's right. I don't get to mope right now, because about the only thing I can contribute here is morale.
He starts playing again. Not the triumphic music from before, but not a sad piece either. Just a bit of beauty to combat the darkness. He rises as he plays and heads off toward the tree where Elthana found him. Forcing himself to look down at the body, he wrestles his face into a soft smile and says, "Though he left us too soon and too brutally, his part in this tale will not go unsung. The same to all others who lost their lives to this nightmare. Remembered all, they will be."
Elthana spends some time in the trees seeing if there were any more surprises waiting for them. When she jumps down to join the the group, she looks ashen faced. When she finally regains her composure she tells them, "I didn't find any more bodies, but did notice other trees that had blood in the same area as the one I found Walker." she looks down to pause a moment, then looks back up at them, "The thing is... what I really don't understand... Walker's body was dropped onto that tree, from above."
Vin walks back after a bit and when it seems the others are ready to bury walker. The young man seems absolutely miserable. He gives a weak smile to Gewyn for their words for Walker. When Elthana ask what did that he and says "Giant would be tall enough, right?" Neferox seems to be right beside Vin again. They seem to be absent-mindedly petting them for comfort.
Neferox seems to be on watch as she scans the area around everyone. Vin however seems ready to go with no desire to stay. He sounds wounded in more ways then just the massive brusises on his sides, "We should probably take a small rest, catch our breath then get back to the camp. We need to get those people out of here." He looks over Where walker is and seems to pause a moment as a tear falls then he let's Nef guide him away to find a place to get a sort rest. Preferably away from all the carnage here.
"Of could of just threw up," Sam adds in a flat tone. "We were expecting something big and strong... If there was something big and flying I'd think someone would have seen it and mentioned it. No?" Sam looks to Iver and Muir as he finishes this, them having been in this particular area the longest.
A burial may be more than they can manage for Walker. Unless someone brought their burying shovel. But Sam will see to making what arrangements can be made, even if it just be creating a mound of sticks and stones above his corpse.
Muir thinks for a moment about the position of the body and the oddity of it all before answering "There are creatures who would prey on humans....Rocs, Griffins, Cockatrice, but....this does not make sense...Like Sam pointed out.....Would we have seen something flying about? Could it have been a giant? Possibly but why do this? Let's not completely rule out some fey creature they've brought with them...." Muir thinks for a moment..."If we don't plan on making camp out here I suggest we make haste back to camp before something else descends upon us"
"It could be," Gewyn says, looking at the treetops, "that just as the gentle fae pursue beauty and laughter, their dark brethren simply pursue ugliness and brutality for its own sake."

Iver gasps and starts muttering a prayer.
“Saving food or just trying to desecrate the land or something?” Sam wonders aloud. “Still, should be over now, right?”
Apparently Sam has no qualms tempting fate with such questions. He’s likely about to ask “what could go wrong?” next.
Neferox just huffs and walks away from Sam as she begins to look around the nest of the not-deer. This leaves Vin standing awkwardly with Sam as they look up at them and say "You're wrong.
