With Gewyn's daggers and Elthana's fists flying, the smaller mimic gets squashed, though as it goes limp, it remains adhered to Muir.
The room which was bustling with movement just a moment ago, stops. The short burst of deadly activity leaving some members of the group breathing heavily
As both of the mimics fall and stop moving Nef looks around for a moment to make sure it is safe. Once she is satisfied nothing else is about to leap out and attack them she takes a bite out of the bigger one. The hound is curious and wants to see how these things taste.
As that is happening Vin takes a bit more to calm down as it was a very sudden attack followed by a sudden stop to the attack. After a moment he says "Is that all of them?" He looks a bit nervously at the remaining chest.
"Oh! Right... hold on." Vin will go over and help get the thing off of Muir. He has a small dagger he will use to help cut it off the druid and aid as best he can in prying it loose. After doing so he will also clean off any slime or gunk left on him using his prestidigitation spell.
“How would we know?” Sam asks in reply to Vin and the starts moving about a rude poking everything that isn’t them with his maul.
“What happened to our Ghoblin?” He asks as he is hitting the bed. “They still around? Is this what ambushed them? He move on to the great goblin in the sky now?”
With Vin's help Muir is able to rip the foul creature right off of him. Muir sighs "It appears these goblins came here, found these chests like you all did, and became dinner. Luckily for us they were but a mere annoyance and no one became dinner. Odd that this little cave is here. There must be some indication around as to its purpose...."Muir satisfied with his assessment of the goblin bones begins looking around for the purpose of this room
Sam begins squashing several things in the room poking and prodding with his maul, making sure no other inanimate objects are secretly hiding malicious intentions.
As Muir investigates the broken desk he finds a very old note book and as he picks it up, the back of the book begins to crumble. Becoming overly cautious as to preserve as much of the remaining notes as possible, Muir's entire focus centers on the book, maybe a little too much, as when he steps back from the table he gets caught up a little too close to Sam's maul and reactively takes a step away crushing the majority of the dessicated stationary, the only thing that remains is half of the still intact cover, upon the inside Muir reads "property of Keeper Yen" but the rest, unfortunately, is gone.
Neferox bites into the fleshy weird creature and finds it not to her liking at all. She ends up barfing up what she ate and then some. She looks a bit miserable after that and goes to watch what Vin is doing who casts a minor spell to clean her up and then pets the top of her head as he says "I didn't think there was anything you couldn't eat." She rolls her eyes and makes a small groaning noise. Vin smiles and says "We can get all kinds of good food once we get out of here."
After this and seeing that Sam is thoroughly checking for any more mimic he goes back over to the remaining chest and takes stock of what is inside it. He only caught a glimpse of the shine before the mimics attacks but now that it is safe he goes to open it and see for himself what is inside. His eyes go big. He's never seen so much gold. "Wow! That is so much gold. I feel like I've seen more gold in the past week then I have my entire life. That egg looks special too..." Vin reaches out to touch it as he uses his magic to cast identify on the glass egg but otherwise doesn't take anything.
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
Vin's eyes go wide in surprise as he goes to identify the egg. A sudden comprehension on the situation. He gets a very somber look on his face and says in a very calm and soothing voice. "I'm... I'm so sorry little one." he will hold his hand out not touching the egg further but instead as a gesture for it to smell or inspect themselves. He continues to be slow and careful trying not to spook it. He gives the terrified thing a moment to see how it will react and if it does nothing he will then reach out to gentle pat the egg. Again he speaks in as gentle and calm a voice as he can "I know your scared and can't understand. Here." he takes his water skin and pours a few drops of water out for the tiny mimic. Trying to calm the critter. A little baby mimic. Scared and terrified. Vin doesn't take it out of the chest to see the grisly act that was done. Instead trying to calm it to sleep before taking them out and if able will pet it to help with this.
The tiny mimic responds well to the calming voice of Vin, the gold gilding splits and the creatures ambulatory tentacles extricate themselves from its form and turn it towards the water. Once it has consumed Vin's offering it turns once more to look at him, though this beast has no eyes to speak of vin feels some sort of connection before it returns once more to its inanimate form.
Sam peers over Vin's should for a moment to get a look at just what he is all goofy over and shrugs. "That thing is going to grow into them things," Sam reminds him, not unkindly but not exactly kindly either.
"You get yourself attached to that thing and then can't tame it better than..." Sam pauses, glances over at Neferox, and, surprisingly, considers his word choice. "Better than Neferox has you trained, anyway... You get attached and that thing stays feral it'll be a lot harder to do what is probably going to need doing. Just sayin'."
With that sage advice given, Sam gives the room one last look around (ceilings, walls, floor, etc... cannot be too careful) before looking at all that gold and letting out a long whistle. "Nice little payday them goblins could have had. You say we need remove the treasure from the mountain to allow Ghoby his freedom?" Sam asks Elthana. "They saying this gold is all there is? It's him that wants to move on, best be clear up front..."
(After giving Elthana some time to consult with the spirit Goblin, if needed...)
"Well I suggest we all fill our coin purses and backpacks and whatnot with whatever we each can without being slowed down or clinking like a squire in rusty plate mail. We still need to find out way out and that could involve some climbing or swimming or fighting still... We can't lug this thing out right now but you can assure your goblin friend we will get it all out, and soon. Besides the finders fee we can take here and now I am half thinking we should give this to the peoples of Hokum. They've a lot of rebuilding to do, a lot of healing to do, and a gold can't do nothing but help either of those..."
As Sam warns Vin the young an nods solumely. Then says "You might be right... I can't just leave it here though. We will be heading back. Perhaps I can find someone who can better take care of it." Nef growls a bit and vin gives a small smile "He's right Nef. I can barely look after myself. Where would I be without you helping me?" neferox doesn't seem to happy with this reply but can't seem to argue too well with it either. Doesn't help she is still feeling icky from the mimic meat so she ends up just huffing in annoyance glaring at Sam in disapproval.
When Elthana says to just get rid of it. Vin looks a bit aghast and surprised at the dark suggestion. "What? No. I'm not going to just get rid of it. It did nothing wrong. It doesn't deserve to be alone just because we had to protect of lives..." he pauses and looks to the baby mimic again and says quietly, "...no one deserves to grow up alone."
He tries to divert the conversation and says "Lets take some of the gold out and divvy it up between us. Then that should lessen the weight o the chest overall letting Muir and Sam carry it. Hopefully we can find a way to just carry it out." If folks agree to this plan. Vin will scoop up a bunch of gold into his pack and place the baby mimic in it. Carefully shielding the sight of it's parents from view as he does so.
Muir listens and watches. Vin's plan makes sense. Muir would begrudgingly carry the chest with Sam. "If it makes life easier for you Sam, I can shift into an animal that is bred for hauling things. That way you can be ready for something if it jumps out to attack."Muir sees Vin with the baby mimic and agrees with Elthana that doing anything but getting rid of the mimic is unwise. Muir decides it is not his place to tell Vin what to do with it. It is his choice to make.
“Nobody is suggesting letting it grow up alone,” Sam says coldly. “If you want, leave it with me and I’ll handle it after you step out of the room…”
“I’ve every faith you can take care of yourself, Vin. You’ve impressed me with just how capable you are,” Sam adds to try to soothe things. “Some things just can’t be trusted in civilized company. Best to put them down before they become a danger…” Sam studiously does not look at Neferox while saying this last bit.
When the topic does swivel back to the hold Sam will point out that it’s not that the chest cannot be carried or needs to be lightened. “It’s unwieldy , the weight, sure, but also the size. Distributing the weight amongst us… eh, that’s not a big deal. Won’t change the moving the chest much one way or another. It’s big and bulky. If frigging spiders jump out at us it’ll take a bit to put that thing down and prepare for battle. If we need cross another decaying bridge. If we have to run away from a giant rolling boulder…”
“If we want to risk it now though, then fine. ‘Tween Muir and I we’ll get it done,” Sam says with a confident nod to Muir. “Main point I see to filling up your packs with what you can is in case the chest is lost.. Or in case we lose it another way…”
Sam looks down at his feet a moment and considers before continuing. “The people of Hokum… they’re in dire straits , yeah? Even if we solved the redcap issue… if we solve the soulless problem…. Their homes, shops, everything is a **** all mess. They’ll need help we’re unlikely to provide. Food. Stuff. Goods. Carpenters. Roofers. Replacement cattle and do on and do on. I see our job as helping the people, yes? I can’t think of a better way to do more now than to donate that gold to them… I think it’s right. Proper. The hood thing to do…”
There’s another pause before Sam clears his throat and slowly looks up to the others. “I guess maybe I wish I was a better man than I really am. I think we should give the chest of gold to the people… but that’s why’s I thinks not all the gold should be in the chest, yeah? We deserve a bit, I think, all things considered. And we may need a bit, eventually, to get Elthana cured and such. So that’s my thinking of why we load ourselves separate from the worry of carrying it, eh?”
Sam shrugs and looks at each briefly then shrugs again. “Anyway, just the thought of an old thickheaded working man. I want to look out for others… but also for me and mine.”
Muir smiles and claps Sam on the back "What a fine idea Sam! A true man of honor. We will need supplies for certain so taking a little bit for potions and curing Elthana is important, so keeping a little should be fine, but you are right. The people of Hokum will need it more than we will. Don't sell yourself short Sam....old and thickheaded you may be but honor and empathy flow through you as well. I stand with you on giving to the people of Hokum."
Vin just flatly says "No." To the idea of killing it. If anything Vin looks very dissapointed in Sam for suggesting it. Vin walks off with the little creature in his pack. Nef watches them walk away from Sam. The hound sighs and looks to Sam clearly saying something to Sam that they probably don't understand. Then the hound walks over to join the young half-elf.
When they get back on the topic of gold Vin is very much for this idea and says "I was thinking the same thing. They could really use it. Let's help Hokum."
With the particular members group who are not carrying the chest, filling their packs and pockets to the brim, (roughly 1000gp each), It lightens the load for Sam and Muir, though the chest remains a bulky and unwieldy thing.
The group make their way back to where Roggi the Ghoblin's bones lie, his spectral visage appears, and speaks with Elthana for a moment before disappearing and his disembodied footsteps lead the group up and out of the hole once more to the waiting Boris and an out of breath Òrga.
Gewyn walks along with a fresh spring in his step and a jingle in his many pockets. "I've thought about it, and surprisingly enough, I don't have much to say about the baby mimic. It could be fully grown and starving, and I still think Nef is the more likely of the two to try to eat me. Besides, imagine the party tricks you could pull, Vin, if you get that thing properly trained. By the way, what are we supposed to do with all this money? And I don't mean the stuff we're giving away. Obviously, there are the supplies, and treatment for Elthana, but the rest...? I'm going to be honest, I hardly know what to do with 5 gold pieces, much less this dragon's hoard I've got in my pockets."

As Elthana sees that the beautiful egg is in fact a baby mimic, she looks to Vin and flatly says, "Get rid of it."
(Waiting on DM for other things, just didn't want to be quiet.)
