Ridani enters behind Dex and leans against the cabin's wall
Captain 3 Earrings look at you and Ridani with an appraising eye "Would you be interested in helping getting the coin needed to rebuild Palma Flora and perhaps a bit of vengeance on those who killed so many villagers?"
Dex looks around briefly. "Avandra would want the merchants there to have a place to return. Vengenance isn't one of my tenants but as it coincides with rebuilding I am in. Where do we go?"
Captain 3 Earrings circles an island "Well first we need to drop off the villagers and gather supplies here at Bisaft Isle"
"The reason the Sahuagin attacked Palma Flora was due to an old grudge. The Sahuagin were shark herders and each years during the Shark hunting tourney the people of Palma Flora would hunt their sharks."
Over the next half hour she tells you the following information
The earthquake dragged Flora Isle into the Sharkfeather Abyss, a nearby trench that is home to a clan of shark-herding humanoids known as sahuagin.
The Sharkfeather sahuagin and the people of Palma Flora have been at odds for generations, since Palma Flora hosts an annual shark-hunting festival.
A young female sahuagin named Selachai recently took charge of the Sharkfeather clan and wields unusual powers. She carries a magic scepter that has been recognized as a rod of retribution, which has become a conduit for unearthly levels of magical power.
No one knows exactly how this young sahuagin managed to cause an earthquake powerful enough to drag Flora Isle under the waves, but that isn’t important. What is important is finding a way to delve beneath those waves and take the scepter from Selachai. Doing so would stop her from causing any more chaos, and the relic would doubtlessly sell for a pretty penny on the black market.
That all seems to make sense. The part about an uncommon item causing an island to sink seems a bit off. I would like to see if there is anything known about the history of the grudge, the possibility that an item can cause earthquakes and if there is anything noticed that seems off with the conversation. I assume these would be 1 or more checks.
I will add a few for you to use if so.
History seems easy that is an actual skill listed. History: 3
I'm guessing arcana for magic stuff? Arcana: 16
Maybe insight for a general idea on the conversation, the captain and the ship? Insight: 7
If these aren't right or you need more let me know, I will try to jump on for a few minutes between jobs today.
With nothing else much to do Dex will wander around the ship and find several people to help out with healing, using all his days healing and his divine channelling to try to get everyone at least stable and able to fend for themselves. Once that is complete he will go to the spare cabin and settle in. He takes several hours to pray and call to his goddess for guidance and favor.
Once near Bisaft Isle he gets up and looks for something to help with on the deck.
Island refugees have created makeshift shelters from the sun all across the deck of Wavechaser. A handful of others who managed to reach the ship before it left the dock.
Night falls
Seagulls squawk and chase behind you as Wavechaser sails on to your next port of call. Night settles around you, the crew guided only by the light of the stars.
In the Morning
“Wake up, travelers!” The voice of Boerth, one of Wavechaser’s crew members, rouses you from slumber. The sun is barely above the horizon, but you can just make out the docks of a port through the porthole window of your cabin. “It’s past dawn and time to get moving.”
When the adventurers emerge from their cabin, they find that the refugees from Palma Flora are packing up the few possessions they were able to save.
You have arrived at Bisaft Isle. Its a small island with a singular village. You can see merchants hawking their wares.
One of the refugees thanks Dex for fighting off the creatures at the ship. She says she has some contacts on the isle that will help the other refugees. As a reward she offers you 25 gold
"Thank you my lady I will turn this into favor and possibly help more."
Assuming the crew will be busy gathering supplies Dex will take a walk around the village. With nothing specific to purchase or needed he will take a look around and see if anything of interest sticks out. If not after a short time around he will head back to the ship to prepare for them taking off and heading to the next phase. He will take some time to watch and listen to see if he can learn anything about the ship and its crew from rumblings of the villagers.
Bisaft Isle is warm and balmy, particularly in the early morning. The whole port smells of fresh rain. Its people are wary of 3 Earrings, but are kind to visitors and refugees.
In the village the Captain says "We need a way to survive underwater. The scrollery is a mile from the harbor and is run by an old female tortle shaman named Grimalda. She owes me a favor. Can you go see her on my behalf. She might know a way to breath underwater. The people here don't like me much"
Looking to 3 Earrings Dex gives her a long look. "Don't like you much? " He shrugs and walks toward the harbor to find the shaman. Looking around if he sees Ridani he will yell over "Up for a walk?"
He will find the scrollery. Once there he will knock and announce himself. "Greetings, it is Dex'Tar Battlehammers. I speak for 3 Earrings and I have a message." If he gets an invitation he will walk in and look around and address the shaman.
"She is mounting a campaign to go after the heathen who is responsible for the sinking of the isle of Flora into the ocean. We need a way to survive and thrive underwater at their depths to take the fight to them. She says you will have help."
"Aye its true I owe her." You hear her rummage through her room and a poof of blue smoke spills out of her doorway. She comes out coughing. "Wear these and you will be able to breath underwater."
The arcane is not his specialty but Dex knows enough that it is total possible for an item to do such a thing. "Much thanks to you. Avandra's blessing to you."
Dex takes the items and heads back to the ship. "Let us get this moving. Fortune favors the bold."
Back on the ship, 3 Earrings looks sternly at Dex and asks, “Are you prepared? You’re about to risk life and limb for naught but treasure and a sense of vengeance. The only folk who would do such a thing are the greedy, the foolish, and those with nothing left to lose.”
"If you have provisions, I am ready. Avandra delights in travel and adventure and I am on a mission to find her in myself. I am not as capable a fighter underwater but if that is where my path leads. Let us go."
Captain 3 Earrings looks at your weapon. "That will not do. To fight underwater you would be at a disadvantage, unless fighting with a dagger, short sword, javelin, spear, or trident. You should consider going back into town to purchase different weapons or perhaps trade with some of the refugees. I have seen one of them carrying a trident. Most likely taken off of the one you killed"
Ridani looks at her own weapons "I guess I will see if the town smithy has any shortswords. Would you like to come Dex"
The Blacksmith charges 3 gp for the weapons. Once back on the ship, Captain 3 Earrings sets sail back to Palma Flora.
In the middle of the night, one day after Wavechaser leaves port, the ship’s navigator, Kijori, shouts out a warning. "Another ship has emerged from behind a tall rock formation and is moving to intercept!"
The intercepting ship, named Moonbeam, is a caravel flying the colors of the Clovis Concord, the government of the Menagerie Coast. The craft is slightly smaller than Wavechaser and is gaining on her rapidly.
Voskiir Captain of the Moonbeam boards the Wavechaser with his thugs. The ship's crew is on edge and the tension in the air is palpable.

Everything the captain has said is true. You don't know much of the relic until you see it for yourself.
"It will take a day to get to Bisaft Isle. You and your friend can use the spare cabin on the ship"

"Sure, at least this island won't sink beneath my feet" responds Ridani
The door opens slightly "What message would she have for me?"
Dex steps into the room and nods a greating.

"I appreciate the advice. I will find something more suitable for underwater. I trained for a time with a spear with the town guard. I will find one."
Dex heads moves and finds a decent balanced spear and dagger. Once that is done he returns to the ship to move out.
