Cob can barely take his eyes off the red creature that has been revealed inside the voidsphere. He almost doesn't register the arrival of old man Jiminy.
When he does, he just shakes his head at the riddles and shouts over to the others.
"We should get out of here," Cob yells. "This isn't going to end well."
He looks up at where he assumes Jiminy entered from, then with a quick look around at the others to make sure they're all capable of moving without help, starts flying for the exit.
Old Man Jiminy lets Cob fly past him for a while before he snaps his fingers.
Silence falls and all of you find your muscles locking once again. The world contorts around you as blinding white light fills your vision. Your entire body tingles before you feel weightlessness takes over your body. Your mind begins to drift.
Drexon, as white fills your sight, you catch the eye of Old Man Jiminy. You hear his voice in your mind. "What is time but a river? It snakes downstream, upstream, and downstream again as it pleases. What is the past and what is the future? Who says that your past cannot be in your future? Who says that your future cannot be in your past? Your circle, Mr. Krayz, is more complicated than you realize. The answer you seek lies in Montecarexpat."
Cob, despite your best attempt to fly away, you cannot go far enough before white fills your vision. The last thing you see before your consciousness begins to drift away is the sight of you and your current companions descending down from upstairs. They look older, hardier, and wearier. There is a sense of purpose in their gaze. You catch the eyes of your probably older self and saw hope that everything will be alright in the end. That the answer you seek will be given.
"Find the creature's name," you hear Old Man Jiminy says. His voice is getting quieter and quieter. "Find the creature's name and we shall seal it away once more."
Your consciousness drifts through an expanse of whirlwinds and storm clouds. There is no sense of direction amongst the chaos before you. Foreign thoughts whizz past and glimpses of visions fly away. You catch some: your journey on the train, your meeting with Sego, Sego standing beside someone with the same face as her in front of an amber wall, a circus troupe, an old towering citadel filled with books, a massive grassy plains with a small cottage over the hill, a well-used smithy, a tumbling of coins on a table.
Silence falls once more amidst the roaring thunder and whirlwinds, and you feel your entire being tingle once more before a massive yank behind your navel pulls you back to reality. White fills your vision once more before flickering away, replaced by the sight of a massive slab of a wall. Looking around you recognize the courtyard of Bast Trench. The sun is about to set on the horizon and there is none of the encampments you have seen before. Strangely still, the wall before you is unblemished. There are no amber walls, no black holes, nothing. Just a simple wall of an old fortress overgrown by vines and plants.
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
Karm gives off a big sigh. Usually i blame this on dreams, bad sleep and heavy drinking, but i dont think this ruin is the aftermath of a party gone haywire He pauses for a moment. What have we gotten ourselfs into...
Karm steps up to the stone wall and tries to determine how much time hasnot passed since they were last here by comparing the state of ruin. History: 9
{{have we level-upped now? And new year, same old me. Karms intelligence based checks are still not up to snuff. In case it flags as modified, it was a 13 total}}
Karm, as you look at the wall, you can see that it has different color compared to the one you have seen. You are not quite sure by how much, but the coloring suggests that the wall in front of you is younger and less worn down by time than the one you saw before. Walking a bit around, you see that the rest of the fortress is in the same condition. It is still worn and old, but not as old as the one you entered. Perhaps one or two centuries younger, give or take several decades.
Taking in the world around him and realizing how much time he has he will now sit down for 22 minutes with his spellbook open and ritualy casts identify on the ring and sand he found in the fort
Drexon comes back to his senses with one word ringing through his mind, Montecarexpat!
He looks across to the others to make sure they are all ok. He is finding the situation very strange, but has life has been strange for as long as he can remember, and he tends to roll with it.
"Everyone present and in one piece?", he says before chuckling, "Present! Now that is funny".
"So, the old man said the plan was a hundred years in the making. I wonder if we are the ones that make the plan, or if we are pawns in someone else's plan", he wonders out loud as he also starts to wander around. His pack of cards are somehow now in his hand, and he is shuffling them one handed.
His main focus at the moment is to ensure no-one spotted their arrival.
Karm, over the next half an hour, you learn that the ring is an arcane focus. It is simple in made and quite small for your finger. The sand, however, makes you pause. In your hand is an armful of etheric amber dust and gold sand. It is not as pure as the amber wall you have seen, but it can still be used to enhance spells. From the quality, you have in your hand about three uses of Category-3 catalyst, capable of upcasting a spell one tier up for each expended use. Generally, such catalysts can cost 1 to 5 silver coins per dose.
Drexon, as you look around the area, you can see nothing untoward. The place is quiet. Not even the sound of animals can be heard, only the trees swaying in the breeze. Apart from you and your companion, there is nobody around. You cannot even see the beaten path that you used to walk to the fortress before. Everything is overgrown by nature and doesn't seem to have seen civilization for a very, very long time.
Dvark takes in his surroundings and as they register his knees give out and he sinks to the ground. "so we lost? Ugh. Any idea were we are now? I heard Jiminy talking about seeing us again or something but I wasn't really paying attention. I know we are back in the trench but where are Sego and Morgenstern?"
We have not won yet, Dvark answers Karm. Sego and Morgenstern have yet to be here, have yet to be born possibly. Where we are now is not the question, it is when we are. We are now, i can‘t say for certain 1 or two centuries in the past. Well we are in the present actually. The present that a few minutes ago was the past. Karm shakes his head for a second as if he wanted to shake of a spider in his hair. It is confusing, even to me. And it is an even grander mistery on how such a thing is even possible. I am also puzzled on what to do next. Any suggestions?
Eremoz looks around for a second when Karm asks for suggestions. “Well, we barely know where or when we are… I suppose this is our only lead right now.” He points to the fortress.
"Well, regardless of all else, the first order of business appears to be finding somewhere to camp", Drexon says as he looks to the sun starting to set on the horizon.
"There is no chance of making it back to the town before dark, and that is if the town even exists in this time".
Cob frowns once the world comes back to ‘normal’. He looks around, gazing at the sky and then at the greenery.
He opens his mouth to speak but then frowns again. He pulls his pack off his back and then pulls out the book that he had not been able to open before. He runs his hand over the cover and then tries opening it up.
Karm, you do know two places to go to find more information: The Archive of Ages, or its more mysterious sister organization, the Enigma.
Cob, as you pry the book open, it flips open easily. You skim the content of the book quickly and found that it is mostly blank apart from the first page, some of the middle pages, and a section near the end. The first page has well-written calligraphy of the words: Tale as Old as Time. You flip the book to the middle pages and found that it is an entry on the Ancient, the Children of Tuada, and the Veistonii Hegemon as well as the outline of their conflict, titled: The Star Scourge. The section near the end contains a couple of pages of languages and runes that have been weaved together to form simple cantrips that can be easily cast and memorized.
Dvark stares at the ground for few minutes before coming too. "100 years? Huh..." He says before burying his face in his hands. He breathes heaves in a few large breathes then drops his hands and returns to be his feet.
"well.. I guess there's only one way forward. We figure out how to get back and take another shot at that dome. And this time we stop it from breaking or break whatever that thing inside of it is." Dvark looks around at the group and deflates a little and bashfully says "or I suppose setting up camp is probably the way to start."
Cob smiles and almost laughs when he finds what's in the book.
"Your an old softie after all," Cob muses.
Then he almost sets the book on fire when he tries out when of the cantrips in the book and a burst of burning radiance erupts outwards. He then laughs once he sees everything is okay.
He then looks around, finally absorbing a bit of what just happened to them.
"If there was magic to send us back in time, there's bound to be magic to get us home." Cob says. "We just need to find big ugly red creature's real name first."
He fishes around in his pack again and pulls out the bottle he'd stashed in there earlier.
"Hopefully this is still edible."
As they look for a place to camp, Cob offers around the bottle and it's supply of soup.
Eremoz takes a stick from the ground and spends a minute drawing in the dirt on the ground while he thinks. “We could check inside the fortress. If it’s safe, it would be good shelter.”
In theorie it is save. By now we should have won against the being of stardust and hunger When he mentions the creature Karms tonation changes to a question. It reminds me of the creature i saw in mi visions years ago and i would have described it as a creature of Flame and pain, but to each their own.
"It appears Old Man Jiminy has lived through the period we are about to experience, but it will be we who tell him about the creature. I wonder if it is our research also that defines it as being made of stardust and hunger. Thoiugh whether it is related to your vision I cannot even begin to guess", Drexon says thoughtfully. The feeling of being displaced in time is odd to him, but does not make him as uncomfortable as he would have expected.
"I agree, Eremoz. Let's try and find shelter in the fortress, there was that courtyard and the strange tree at least", he adds and motions for Eremoz to lead the way.
As he walks, he gratefully accepts some of Cob's soup and has a small portion.
Dvark takes a swig of soup. "stardust and hunger sounds about as sinister to be honest. Like it's a godchild who just wants to eat everything. I don't know but I think it's in the same vein of the vague platitudes people keep telling us."
When they reach the courtyard Dvark finds a flatish rock starts hammering out some bent nails into shape absent mindedly. He hums a small prayer to the Dusk Weaver and then flower at the nails as if they've offended him.
You reheat the soup in the bottle that Gustav gives you when you exit the train. As soon as the soup touches your tongue, you feel like you have tasted the most delicious meal you have ever tasted. The spice's richness and the taste's simplicity remind you of home and safety. Your body feels warm, akin to being embraced by soft pillows and blankets on a lazy morning. Clarity comes to your mind faster and you feel like you can keep going through the day without eating or drinking anymore.
{{Gustav's Mystery Soup: You have a +1 on Wisdom check and Wisdom saving throw for the next 24 hours. You also no longer feel hungry or thirsty for the duration.}}
When you enter the inner courtyard, you are treated once again to the sight of the spiraling pale trunk and deep auburn leaves of the Seed of Passion. The sound of little bells echoes around the inner courtyard as the crystalline tree pulses and sways. Tranquility fills your body and minds the closer you step to the tree. It is peaceful and calming here, a perfect place to rest for the night.
