"So I'm curious if there is a connection with the peryton and this tower. I'm going to try for what I think is the roof. Anyone want to join?" And Faera starts heading towards the R on the 'portal key'. She goes slow enough if anyone wants to go first or stop her.
Thurodim simply grunts and nods, not intending to let anyone go off on their own if he can help it. He had started to doubt they would find any trace of the peryton in here but there was probably still some sort of connection, if only one that made them enter this hidden tower.
"Alright, try the 'R'. But I'd rather wait a bit on trying the one pointing at that," Mala says, pointing at the large portrait on the wall. She prepares to follow Faera through the portal.
“It should work just fine on it.”Ilithir answers Thordim, using prestidigitation on the stained beard.
Ghurr idea was terribly plausible. To that point the tower had been nothing if not a distortion on time and space. The way it seemed to exist and not exist at the same time. The manner in which the portals led to different environments… Intertwined archways didn’t sound farfetched.
“Separating the party is almost always the worst choice one can take. Specially for spellcasters like us.”He said turning to the wizard, suddenly realizing the likely difference on background in their company. Not everyone there was a street rat turned body guard. “Let’s have the melee combatants walk in front.” The silver haired man continued, ready to follow his companions. “That said, looking at the roof seems like the most reasonable step for us to take next and I agree with Mala.”
That was likely the way to the master of the tower, or whatever he had become. An enemy, Ilithir was sure. And a powerful one, if what happened last night was any indication. He just hoped the spellcaster didn’t have another flying terror for them to fight, although, indoors, the danger posed by such creature should be reasonably contained. For once it would be far easier for the frontliners to hit with attacks. Ghurr and Thordim would likely made short work of the thing.
Ghurr looks around again at the floor to see the letters, a little confused but not enough to bother him too much. When he sees the group has chosen 'R' he moves to the front with Thurodim to go through first.
"R is for roof," Ghurr says. Then hefts his glaive, the blade pointed slightly forward as he steps through the archway.
Sounds like the order at the front is Thurodim, Ghurr, Faera.
From the centre of the room you make your way towards the archway past the R symbol. As you pass the R it glows as the 1 had done, but something isn't right. The archway sparks, the magic flickering at the edges. It catches and the portal opens for a split second, just long enough for a length of timber to come shooting out. It is half a foot thick, and the end is broken into a jagged point.
Thurodim, at the front, is right in its path. I need either a DEX or STR save, depending on how you want to handle it.
Ready to step through the portal, the massive green half-orc roars in anger and surprise as he deflects the timber with a swipe of his heavily muscled arm.
Before it can impale him the large timber is knocked to one side. It collides with the wall with a slam before falling to the floor. Aside from some harmless scuffs on Thurodim's arm, no one is hurt.
The archway continues to spark and flicker at the edge for a few moments, then it stops. The portal does not open.
Thurodim looks at the malfunctioning portal for a moment and the lets out another roar of anger over all this annoying magic. Huffing a bit he turns to the others with a shrug. "Whereto next then?"He grumbles, ready to march into any gate he is pointed to, a little more prepared this time.
In the perhaps half a second the portal opened, Mala was able to catch a glimpse of a mass of broken timber and tile. And beyond that, through the cracks... blue?
"What do you think happened to the roof? Think we'd be able to tell from the floor below? Should we head to floor 6?" Faera looks to the others, then adds, "Nice reflexes Thurodim!"
Unless someone else speaks up, she starts heading for floor 6.
"Oh, um, thanks."Thurodim says, blushing slightly under his black beard, scratching his head. "So where do I go?"He says, assuming he should take point again, ready to move as directed by those who can read the weird symbols.
"All I caught a glimpse of was broken timbers and tiles. Perhaps something has destroyed part of the tower?" Mala asks. The obvious thought in her head is that perhaps the prisoner has somehow broken out of wherever he is located. She turns to Faera, "You couldn't see any damage to the tower from outside, could you?"
At Thurodim's question she turns to him, and points to where the number 6 is located. "Let's see if that one works."
Eight-sided, one visible door, small windows showing the placement of floors - an entry level, six floors intact, and one floor at the top into which it appears the roof has collapsed.
Faera, for reference in answer to Mala's question.
Faera stops in her tracks and looks at Mala, "Shoot, you're right. The roof did appear as though it collapsed, I guess in my rush I didn't think about that." Looking slightly abashed, she steps out of her line to floor 6 and to Mala, "Where do you want to head next?"
"Did we try 1 the first time?" Mala asks, as the others eventually make it back to the entryway. "I say we do the numbers in order."

Ghurr counts on his fingers as he whispers under his breath.
"E. We did E for entrance and exit," Ghurr says but frowns when he looks down at the numbers and letters, not seeing an E.
"There was an 'E' on the other floor Ghurr. Not here," Mala says.

She steps away from the mural on the floor, "Did that seem like someone trying to get out? Or someone trying to keep us out?"

"Hm, if roof collapsed, maybe it is visible from sky, maybe it was nest for peryton after all." Thurodim mutters, scratching his now tidy black beard.
