Fro puts her greataxe away as the gnome looks pretty harmless. "Hello Cyro, I am Fro and this is Faloniir. We are looking for a band of thieves that may have caught and spread a sickness in Palebank Village. We were told they were hiding in these caves. perhaps that is who you saw.
Would you mind joining us to show us where you saw those people.
Faloniir raises an eyebrow when Cyro makes to pat him on the shoulder, but allows it. He raises both eyebrows when Cyro says he's been there 150 years, not sure how to take what the gnome is saying. Faloniir will say to the group, "I'll fall back a bit and keep an eye on the way we came." He will then make a point to look Cyro in the eyes when he says, "I'd hate to be surprised. I don't handle surprises very well."
If you like, you can roll insight to see if your character can judge what Cyro has been saying, and how that matches up with what you already know about the disease you’re investigating.
”Wait I just remembered a few things! The left path is where many bats roost, and the bandits are taming dangerous frogs that could probably kill you on the right path. The bandit leader has this disease and is trying to find a cure, but nobody else down there has it. They have probably set up an ambush down there. Many, many giant frogs, I say. Both ways lead to the same place, Fro. Unless you are prepared, you are in grave danger no matter which path you choose.”
Faloniir will cross his arms and nod as Cyro speaks. When the eccentric gnome is finished Faloniir will say, "Have you spent time with these bandits? Do they trust you? My priority right now is to get to the bottom of this sickness. I'm not particularly concerned about whatever else goes on in these caves. Perhaps if you have a rapport with them you can convince them of that. I'd really rather not watch more people die today if I can help it."
“I have stayed hidden and been down there, but their leader lives beyond where I can go, as they live across a large pool of water and I have no way of getting across it.
Faloniir nods to Fro, "The right path works for me, I'll be bringing up the rear." To Cyro he will say, "Alright, well thank you for your help. Will you come with us? I must warn you, it may get dangerous."
"So Bats on the left path, Frogs on the right. and an ambush at the end of both?" How do the bandits get around the frogs and bats?" Fro looks at the gnome a bit wistfully, then turns to Faloniir. "Given the choice, I would rather face the frogs than the bats."
"HHmmm, then we can handle a few bats and frogs." Fro heads down the right path, taking the lead and going slow and steady, looking for traps and dangers.
The right path/passage opens into a long dark cavern with many pools of water on the ground. It’s hard to tell how big or deep they are. The light of Fro’s torch reflects weakly off the waters’ filthy surfaces. You see that there appears to be a larger pool at the back end of the cave. At the edge of that pool, about 60 feet still from where you are at, is a bucket.
Cyro, you can tell that there are two giant winter frogs lurking in one of the nearer pools, only about 20 feet in to this cavern.
Faloniir, you’ve scrutinized Cyro and his story. Something doesn’t add up but you can’t make much sense of the gnome for now and his odd mannerisms.
Faloniir will definitely keep an eye on Cyro, but for now he will try and spot the giant frogs the gnome was talking about and give them a wide berth. He then will walk over to the bucket and peer inside.

Edited for Bruenors comments that he saw people.
“I have been here for 150 years.”
Fro lifts her torch higher and says. "Well, you have been here long enough then... Lets go. Does the right path seem ok to you guys?"
Unless someone disagrees, she will take the lead and start down the right cave.

“Frogs both ways. Remember, it’s a group of armed bandits, and a large amount of them. They can handle a few bats and frogs.”

”The frogs… are 20 feet away in a nearby pool of murky water. Should I… start aiming my bow at them?”
