Out of the corner of her eye, as she is less agilely climbing through the jungle around the clearing, Yellow notices the solitary tree ... move! She turns her head and watches it approach Vyth, making that awful croaking sound. "No," she almost whispers. She slows and gapes as two massive wood arms lower out of the canopy and drop onto her fellow Chultan. "No!" she screams as Vyth's blood flies. The Lizardfolk's body crashes to the ground limply, a mass of indiscernible meat where his head should be. "No!" she screams again, her voice full of emotion. She grips her shield and sword tightly. Her muscles clinch as she readies to run into the clearing. Then, she recognizes the sounds of her companions. They are running ... away from the scene. She looks around and her muscles loosen. She looks back into the clearing at Vyth's body and the advancing monstrosity. Closing her eyes for a second and praying a prayer to Ubtao for her fallen comrade, she turns and runs away from the clearing as well.
Ezio curses as Vyth is crushed by the tree. They weren't close, but Vyth had been a fearless warrior during their travels, very useful in his way. In an attempt to salvage as much as possible for the situation, Ezio manifests a spectral hand to grab the longsword Vyth had been admiring earlier.
Ezio than moves 20 ft out into the jungle and then 20 ft through the jungle parallel to the path the others are taking.
STR Check: 16
OOC: the hand can only move 30 ft per round. If it can grab the sword, it moves back to Ezio if it can make it, if not, i moves as far as it can toward the path the others ran down
Panwan sees everyone flee and follows them down the path, as the group of adventures looks back they notice the massive tree go back into the center of the clearing and begin to transform back into an ordinary looking tree, guarding the circle. The flytraps can't be seen from this angle with all the brush and vines along the path but you assume they went back to where they started, waiting for unsuspecting adventurers looking for easy loot.
Ezio's spectral hand lifts the longsword off the ground and floats back to Ezio where he grabs it from the hand and runs down through the jungle catching up to the group. Panwan sets a grueling pace for a good 20 minutes trying to make as much distance as he can between you and the clearing of death. Once satisfied he stops the group to take a breather.
"I am sorry for the loss of your companion. I know it is hard when you lose someone. From the sound of the trees croaks, I would assume he was created by the Grung to trap trespassers in their lands." He says a little prayer to Ubtao and makes a small hand gesture and kisses it to the sky. "I need to think. The people in the clearing where not the missing patrol but their tracks went this way. I am going to have to find a way around this mess and we are going to lose time. The jungle is thick around these parts and the Grung are numerous. We need to be very careful as we proceed."
Panwan pulls out a map and begins to look at it as he mumbles to himself. "We are coming towards undead territory as well."You notice Panwans eyes turn to small flames for a second and flicker in the sunlight before they turn back to normal. "Breakbone is a fool for not sending us with troops."
"Let's take a short rest so I may think and you guys can prepare. We still have a long way to go for the day before we have to stop for the night." Panwan says as he pulls out his waterskin and takes a long pull from it.
Kvothe takes a drink from his waterskin and maintains a guard position - constantly scanning the jungle and the trees and branches overhead - while Panwan works out what to do.
Krav sits a ways away from Panwan, back to a tree, and takes a drink from his own waterskin. The "wizard" rubs him the wrong way, but at least he seems to know what he's doing.
No more lizardman, Krav thinks to himself. Krav isn't sure how to feel about that. Sure, he didn't like Vyth much from his first impression of him, but he'd rather have settled their differences with a brawl than seen the lizardman's brains splattered across the ground. Frowning, Krav sets down his waterskin and stoppers it.
More to take his mind off of Vyth's sudden death (which only serves to remind Krav of the companions he just lost a few days ago), Krav starts rummaging through his pack. He does so for a few moments before pulling out a small, thin, red book, which appears to be well-worn. Krav sadly stares at its cover, starts to put it back, then, appearing to make a silent decision, gingerly opens the book. He flips carefully to the third page and starts to read.
Yellow walks through the party as they sit and begin to rest. She notices that the two parties are either consciously or unconsciously grouping, with Panwan choosing a spot away from either group. The Tabaxi chooses a spot near Ezio and Taggart and sits. She's drawn her dagger from her pack and it flashes in the light as she lets it dance in her paw. "I'm not sure what to say," she finally admits, keeping her eyes on the dagger. "I'm not sure why this is so upsetting ... except ... that he was from Chult. Like me."
Kaslo remains standing and talks to no one in particular. "I can't say I was overly fond of Vyth, but the death he received was harsh and abrupt. Perhaps with enough time Vyth would have displayed a more compatible side, but now we shall never know. The Sun rises and sets each day. It's up to us to make the most of the time between."
hHe was brash and impulsive but I didn’t wish him ill will, it is unfortunate he is gone. We should remember this though and be more cautious in the future, those who don’t learn from their mistakes or the past end up dead here in the jungles of Chult. "Vyth's death was unfortunate, but he knew what venturing in this jungle meant more than most of us. He was not the type to mourn the fallen, so I doubt he would want us to commiserate over his death over much." Ezio says cooly though with none of his usual snark. He was replying to Yellow, but also looking over at Kalso so the dwarf would know his words were also ended for him.
"Let us instead take his death as a warning and a learning experience that we, fortunately, had the good luck to survive. It is clear our strategy and operating procedures need be more refined. Along those lines, I think it's time we've gotten to know a bit about each other and our capabilities so that we my operate in a more concerted fashion in the future." With that Ezio stands it gets the attention of all the others, even inviting Panwan, and gathers them around explaining his intent.
"First, I admit that both our departed companion and I were hasty in our actions in the clearing. I sincerely thank all of for your efforts in saving my life." He makes eye contacts with each of them and bows deeply and gracefully. He then straightens and flicks a hand, causing a black cat to appear in front of him that then walks in lazy circles between his legs.
"I am Ezio Miradark, half-elf of human and Eladrin ancestry and this is my familiar, Ulcahne. As you are already aware, I am a wizard of some ability. My spells specialize in enhancing my own combat effectiveness, but I have several that will be of use to the party at large and hope to gain more once I find a way to get around the lock on this spell book I recovered from the clearing. Once I'm able to procure the necessary spell materials, I will be able to grant Ulcahne a form that will be more useful for reconnaissance. I am also trained in the elven combat art of the Bladesong. It's power enhances my speed, reflexes, and agility so that I also a capable fighter in melee. Speaking of which I was able to recover this sword before escaping the clearing if any has need of it, it seems to be of some power." He holds up the naked blade briefly, he was unable to recover the scabbard.
"Eku told me of your mission to find and destroy the Soulmonger while she and I were speaking in the camp. I am also employed on the same mission, so I would like to continue our partnership even after this mission of the Order's is complete. Are there any others wish to speak?" Ezio asks before sitting. He studies the sword as he listens to the others speak.

Ezio recognizes the symbols on the blade of the longsword that some of the blade masters that trained him had on their weapons. He senses the magic in the longsword and prepares a ritual spell to identify it, learning that it's a Vicious Weapon. The magic makes one's attack more brutal when their strike is pure. He explains this to the group when there is a break in the conversation.
Kvothe looks up when he hears Ezio say "our strategy and operating procedures need be more refined." "Good words elf"he says. "This place is dangerous and we need to watch for signals from each other" he continues. "As for my area of expertise - well it is problem solving!" he finishes off with.
"Well, do you think you could solve the problem of the lock on this book?" Ezio says with his customary grin returning to his face. He hands the man the red book. "It didn't appear to have any arcane wards you need worry about."
"On second thought, give that back." Ezio says with a sideways look at Kvothe.
Kvothe hands the book back with a smile.
Ezio then prepares another ritual to identify the book to ensure there are no wards it. After 10 minutes Ezio's eyes widen in surprise and then he grins widely. He takes an empty sack out of his bag, places the book inside of it and wraps the extra material around the bundle tightly. Afterwards, he places the bundle inside his empty rain catcher, so that it is protected from the elements, and places the whole thing back into his pack, burying it under the other items inside for further protection.
"Well, the book won't be immediately useful even if I were to get it open somehow. Should I have about a week of free time to study it, I'm sure it will help immensely." Ezio says to the others.
Panwan scowls as he puts the map back in his pack. He looks at each member of the group as small flames where his pupils should be flicker wildly for a moment before turning back to normal.
"We will be going back to the clearing. It is the only way to get where we have to go unless you want to lose days of travel, which I do not."
"The order has tasked this mission to me so it must be of vital importance. They would not send their most powerful soldier to do something trivial."
Panwan pulls a dagger out of a pouch on his belt. The dagger has a jet black handle and a crimson colored blade with magical runes up and down the blade.
"Leave the tree to me when it awakens. Do you think you guys can handle the Man-Eaters?" Panwan asks.
