“The channel is deep and the water appears to be flowing fast. I don’t think we can swim across.” Thatch looks up as Cainneach shares his story, then looks over at Hotspur. “Well, this bear already seems awake, enough to be dangerous at least. What do you say, Master Hotspur? Do you have a song for the occasion or a horn to blow?”
Hotspur shudders involuntarily upon learning that the potion tasted like water. What a waste!
As they come to the stairs and the river, with the angrily incomplete bear statue, he looks a bit dubious. "Music to calm the savage beast? Well, let's have a go, shall we...?"
He clears his throat and quickly tunes his lute, then begins a calm, peaceful lullaby in a soothing voice.
"Fearsome King Ursinus,
monarch of the forest,
Struck fear like a dart in every hunter's heart,
his savage might unequalled!
He ruled with flinty claw o'er both
the richest and the poorest,
His grizzled maw and sharpened claws
left all human towns unpeopled..."
The bard grins and shrugs at the strange rhyme scheme, as he continues plucking a lullaby-tune.
"Well, we do have that rather dangerous wand. I think either fire or ice might be useful in putting that statuesque bear back in hibernation. Who was holding that anyway?"
"Water that seeps into cracked stone and freezes can break it apart," Hotspur offers, brainstorming. "I don't know that fire would have much effect. We don't have anything like a crown... any other emblems of royalty lying about in your pockets? No? Could we loop a rope around the base and tip it over..?"
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
"I think Valor is the only one near royalty here, unless Twiggy would allow me to crown her queen of the forest. And Hotspur, as much as it pains me to say it, that song was truly well done. If that wasn't able to awake in that cranky bear any notion of nobility, I don't know what would. However, if you don't think a sufficient flame can cause a rock to crack, then allow me introduce to that red dragon back there. I'm not sure what our wand is capable of, but given that it's magical fire, it might do the trick. That being said, you are correct about the ice. Trying the rope first is probably the safest course, though, and I can volunteer mine."Cainneach then forms a loop with his rope and, from a safe distance, attempts to toss it around the bear statue.
Sleight of Hand22 (feeling inspired, I hope! So much for that, wow...)
The rope loops up and seems to be flying somewhat true when razor sharp claws on huge stone arms slice through it dropping pieces of it to the ground and given Cainneach half his rope back...
"Ha, I suspected that might be the outcome. It's not always fun to be right. So who's up next? Shall we try the ice wand?"Cainneach shrugs and sighs, then goes about collecting the remnants of his now 25' long rope.
Hotspur watches the failed attempt with an arched eyebrow. "Uh, well, I was thinking of trying to get it around his feet somehow, seems like only being partly bear, he might not be able to reach the floor.. but no matter, I'm sure some other solution will present itself. Let's see... bears like honey, and fish. And possibly porridge. They like to sleep. The crowned bear overslept and was awoken by the trump of angels... personally, as an instrument I don't really care for trumps, too loud and obnoxious. The music they produce is shallow and stupid, such as what petty, racist would-be dictators would listen to. Ah, but I digress... what would a carved statue of a bear want or need to calm down or fall asleep?"
"Hotspur, I have no idea what sort of instrument a trump is, yet your words describing it ring incredibly true!"Cainneach then turns to Dru and says, "All right, Twiggy, let's show them how it's done! Splash that water up there, mind the arms of course, and I'll give it a blast with this ice wand. Once you're clear. Once everyone is well clear."Cainneach looks around to make sure the party comprehends and moves to safety, then takes the wand from Bretwald and readies himself, or so he thinks. Once Dru soaks the statue, Cainneach will make what seems to him to be a mystical gesture and then thrust the ice end of the wand toward the statue.
The blast of frozen sleet smashes into the statue covering it in rime and causing a myriad of smaller fractures and cracks to appear on the statue, it seems badly damaged but not completely out of commision.
In Cainneachs hand he feels the vibrations from the wand lessen markedly...
"Ha, as you like it, Twiggy!" There is a gleam in Cainneach's eye, stemming from the invigoration of wielding magic for the first time. "Oh, and I'm not sure, but this thing might be losing its potency ...", he adds as he reverses the wand and (hopefully) unleashes a blast of fire that will shatter the bear.

A blast of flame washes over the statue instantly turning the ice into superheated steam and causing the cracks to widen until the crystalline form loses cohesion and tumbles into a pile of quartz boulders.
In Cainneachs hand the wand slowly begins to crumble and tumbles from his fingers nothing more than ash.
"The trump is a sort of horn, but made of metal, usually with a brassy or orange-y color. The sound is produced by blowing lots of hot air through it, although for the unskilled player, it just sounds like flatulence. But enough of that..."
The bard cheers as Dob uses fire and ice to destroy the obstacle, although he wonders what happened to the sculptor who originally created the magical artwork.
Bretwald returned to them, " So have we figured out a way past our crystal friend? Or are we resorting to violence?"

"One day he trod regally, through the trees
He stopped, he frowned, he paused...
An unearthly melody 'twas on the breeze
a warm, drowsy feeling it caused
In his mighty heart and furry breast
'Twas the goddess of Nature did sing
'Winter is here, dread king' she confessed,
'You must sleep now, my love, 'til Spring."
Whilst the song did rouse the spirits of the group ( All PCs receive Inspiration ), it seemed to fall on deaf ears for the statue itself.
Bretwald, still humming to himself from Hotspurs song, ventured, " Well it is stone. What do we have that might work against stone? "
"Well, we do have that rather dangerous wand. I think either fire or ice might be useful in putting that statuesque bear back in hibernation. Who was holding that anyway?"

Tana looks a little sad at the mention of returning the half-bear to a statue-like form, but nods her head regardless.
"That may be the wisest option we have. Though if we could just somehow placate it..." Her thought trails off into a murmur.

Dru takes out her waterskin. "Perhaps if I splash some water on it, we could freeze its arms into immobility."

Bretwald heads over to Morseth and takes the wand from him, " Do you mind?"
Morseth didn't respond, seemingly distracted by something only he could hear.
Bretwald headed over to the others and held the wand out to them...
