The late morning sun rises quickly as you head down the mountains toward the valley and meadow below. After an hour, you come across a small stream which works its way down stream. By the second hour, it has joined a couple of other small streams to become a small brook. At a large pool, you see a VERY large set of pawprints, they are about 9-10 inches in length. But there is no sign of the animal.
Chris looks down at the large foot prints “Well if that’s not ominous and foreboding I not sure what is.” Then mutters a few simple words from the spell book as water from the stream lifts into the air flowing into his water skin.(cast: Shape Water)“At least apparently magic is a thing…anyone need a fill up?”
"Fair enough... we won't die of thirst. I was hoping for a stream or river that might act as landmark and source of food or other medicinal ingredients. We might find other landmarks along the way. I'm sure we could identify where we are if I get a better sense of our surroundings. Then we can figure out what we need to do next."
"Thanks for coming with me, Jordi",said Magnus as they walk.
It's definitely canine and judging by the size of the paw and spacing of the paw prints is something much larger than any mastiff, husky or wolf you have ever seen. Surprisingly, the canine has gone to unusual lengths to hide it's tracks by stepping on rocks, logs and downed branches.
All,
Judging by wind and scent, it is somewhere back the way you came.. maybe up one of the other stream branches...
"Well, smoke means fire, and fire means warmth, and maybe hot food, so my vote is to follow the smoke, and not the huge wolf-prints," says Jordi, earnestly.
"My new friends, those were much larger than normal wolf prints. Also, it seems unusually intelligent or cunning. It is trying to cover it's tracks by stepping on rocks, logs and downed branches."
"Does anyone feel they might be able to scout ahead to investigate this fire without being seen?"
You backtrack for half a mile before you see a small trace of smoke rising above you. Leaving the stream, you climb up a steep incline to find a flat open meadow, about 1,000 ft across and roughly semi-circular. At the far end where it rises again there is a roughly 10 x 8 ft irregular cave opening. Above it, from several places you can see small trails of warm, smoke rising.
Even more surprising are the buildings near the cave entrance, each appearing to be a miniature building. The largest looks to be a barn about 10 x 20 x 50 ft, and the other two are about the size of children's playhouses being about 6 x 8 x 8. Attached to the barn is a corral, with six miniature goats eating from a net of hay hanging from a pole.
"Probably gnomes,"says Jordi. Then, blushing, he says, "Well I told you I play these games a lot. They're little people that sometimes have magical abilities. Probably not the red-hat ones you see in people's gardens, though."
In response to your call, the barn door opens and two humanoids step out. They are both about three and a half foot tall, with spiky brown brown hair and short beards. They are clothed in dark brown leather pants, brown leather coats and are carrying pitchforks. Hay can be seen on their coats, boots and hair.
One calls out to you in a language you don't understand, while the other drops the pitchfork and half-runs into the cave.

Jordi gulps. "I hope whatever that is is a plant-eater... "

Magnus & Chris
As you stop, you can smell woodsmoke on the slight breeze. Breeze is blowing roughly towards the (now late) dawn.

"Does anyone else smell smoke up ahead?"
Thinking back, "I wonder what animal made those prints in the snow?"

“I can smell it to maybe a cabin or camp near by might get some answers as where we are.”

"I'm not much of a tracker, but I think I would do all right at moving quietly. I'll go ahead," replies the rogue.

Magnus tries to stay far enough back he can hear if there is yelling without worrying about being too clumsy.
(If a roll is needed, let me know).

”Is it just me or are those houses kinda small.” Shaking his head as they peer at the homes “Don’t tell me Unpa Loompas are a thing.”

Jordi says, "It looks harmless enough, I'll go forward and see what's what."
He then approaches the buildings cautiously, hands out and empty, and when he is close he calls out "Hello? Anyone home?"
