After Mills walked out of the cave far from pleased, squirrel Gor heard quite a bit.
"Dark night, Nargha, the guy is only trying to help." That was Nyssa's voice.
"Yeah, I'm sure he is, he and his little band of misfits, but they have no idea the power of the forces we're dealing with. That amulet they're after isn't just some redneck's family keepsake, it could be the key to helping us unlock the deeper secrets these dragonborn are after, and if we want to have any hope of stopping what they're trying to do, we need to find out what they use it for. This is the best lead we've had in months, and I'm not about to let some jumped up bounty hunters mess it up." Gor can hear the tension in Nargha's voice.
"We won't hurt them though, right?" That voice was male, but Gor wasn't sure which one. After the question was asked there was a long pause.
"I hope we don't have to, but if it looks like they might actually have a chance of taking the necklace from the dragonborn, we might have to subdue them. Let's just hope it doesn't come to that. The odds of them actually finding those dragonborn without the aid of divination magic are slim to none. Just think about how much magical energy we've had to use to keep on their trail! Speaking of which, Irgom, Brilvem, get your food finished so we can see what your spells tell us tonight."
After that there was only silence and the sound of people eating, and occasionally farting and belching.
Gor scurries out of the cave believing if he waits any longer these barbarians will make him dessert. Upon arriving at the camp he shifts back
"After Mills here left, I hung around to hear what they had to say for themselves. They are chasing the Dragonborns to find out their intentions, steal back the amulet and use it for themselves to aid them against the Dragonborn's larger plans. They know, in their words, that the amulet is not a redneck's family keepsake, but some device that leads to great power. They have no plans to hurt us unless we get in their way. They seem to be magically tracking the Dragonborn instead of relying on their instincts and natural abilities. This leads me to conclude that they have neither."
Back a camp Zanoth looks at the group and shrugs..
”Well, I’ve not seen this dour Order of Faith hidden in the cave, but it seems as though they have it in hand… but I’ve also never been one to let others do a job I can do, and healthy rivalry breeds the best of outcomes. So I guess it comes down to how much Lucky here pines for his warm bed and food, and if Gor thinks his “instincts and nature” can beat out tracking magic.
Bed sounds nice.... no wait @#$% those guys. Let's collapse the cave entrance and go finish this job. Lucky's never left a job he's taken undone. Whiskers you got any spells that can collapse the roof of that cave. I could sneak in listening to their magic peeping then sprint out with the info collapse the cave it gives up a head start as they did out. Sure they might try and kill us later but the boy scout can arrest them or something. You can do that right cause i got a list of like 20 dead beats who owe me money back in the city.
What yall think? Even if we skip the sneaking in let's still collapse the cave. I really want to shove a stick up those order guys thinking they can hurt us if we get in the way. I'm lucky the best distraction around IM ALWAYS IN THE WAY.
Lucky is getting worked up as hus rant goes on.
You know what let's just go kill em get them out of our way. Have that tall glass of water join us and we can go do this thing.
Lucky sits down to eat his hot gas spent for the moment.
Muttering "By Grumorjok's dagger, if we don't leave soon I'm going to sneak in and poison those rat eating bastards, in the way ##$%%%..... Need to get a new posioners kit then ill show em. Given em the runs for weeks ha ha ha"
"Slow your roll, you... Murder hobo. We haven't been able to track the thieves. But these folks can. So we don't need to follow the thieves, we just need to follow these people. And if they're onto something.... Anyone have thoughts on sending out a warning? They seem pretty worked up about some kind of threat. A big one." Mills appears to simmering now, rather than furious.
Murder?....Hobo?... I don't know what that is but I choose to be offended. Look I don't want to kill then but you said yourself they threatened us. Fine... I'll just do what I always do but letting then get the upperhand just makes it less likely we get paid.
Lucky kicks back. Muttering "boy scout..... hobo.... wtf isva hobo.... murder I understand its a tool but hobo... maybe that's what they call a wet worker in his order.... whatvever dont care....should have stayed in town....."
Lucky's anger played out pulls out the last of the fine brandy and drinks it pouting.
Gor listens to Lucky's rant and begins to wonder if all halflings are as.....passionate about killing unsuspecting humanoids. He quickly checks his face to be sure that the animal whiskers had disappeared before speaking. "If it is customary to kill unsuspecting humanoids that sleep in caves who belch and fart loudly after meals then I have no objections. Their uncouth manner was telling of their kind...this Order of the Faith....."
No Gor it's only customary to kill unsuspecting humans if someone paid you a pretty Penney. I let my anger get the best of me. Making an enemy of an order is never a good idea.
But sneaking in and listening to what they find out isn't a bad idea. I think we could easly out pace them once we know where we are going. Then Mills can pick up the trail.
Zanoth grins at Lucky's outburst and the new human term, "murder," a word that did not exist in Orcish. One tribe's good kill was another tribe's "bad" kill; it was all just snuffing out life. But the good and evil of it were always in the eye of the beholder. More importantly, an honorable kill was what mattered.
"Well, it seems to me we only have two choices then. We can't track the Dragonborn or the Amulet ourselves. We know nothing of its powers or this bigger 'thing' going on. So, we can leave it to the Order of Faith, take our 60 gold for trying to do this fool's errand, and leave it to them. Then, we can go get some hot stew, cold ale, and a warm bed for the night.
Or, we can join the band of grumpy warriors. We'll march straight up to their little hidey-hole and join the search whether they like it or not. I don't think they will stop us, as they don't have the time or resources and certainly don't want the risk of harm to themselves by attacking us.
Now, if their concern is competency, I think I have a solution from my own lands. A 'friendly' duel would prove our worth, but that would also be taking a risk ourselves if we lost."
Drax listens intently to everything that everyone said, seeming deep in thought. Then, he spoke, thoughtfully.
”If what you say is true gor, and they are after the same amulet as us the likely hood of them simply joining forces is quite low. Not unless we bribe them or something of the sort. I have a feeling that they want the amulet for different reasons than us, which means that if we actually do gain control of the amulet, there would be some sort of power struggle to decide which group would get it in the end.”
Drax spent another minute thinking.
“But I also believe that without either joining them, or following them, we have no chance of finding the amulet. They seem to know what they’re doing, and we don’t. Not as much as we might think we do at least. Zanoth, your point is a good one, and I think our best approach. Though once we get back on the trial I do believe we should leave their group, ideally without them knowing, and steal off on our own.”
(OOC: So many great options here! Sneak in try to gather info on where to go from the group's divination magic discussion. Walk right in and see if they'll work with you towards the same goal. Walk right in and see if they'll work with you towards the same goal after one of you proves themselves in a one-on-one duel. Walk right in and tell them they're working with you or else. Drop a cave in on their unsuspecting heads. None of those plans really require anything from me until they've been enacted though. If you try to sneak in make sure everyone who's sneaking rolls a stealth check. If you just walk right in, make sure to let me who takes the lead in that situation and what their opening salvo to the conversation is. If you try to drop a cave-in on them, just let me know how you plan on attempting it. Until there's a consensus and a post indicating that plan of action has started, I'll just be hanging about waiting with eager anticipation to see what you all decide. :D)
“Well, sneaking ain’t worked, and we cant follow the Amulet on our own. The gang holed up down there seem like good people, if very suspicious, tribal, paranoid and surly.. Hey, just like me ! If what you say is true, one may even be a follower of Saxwyn so would be up for a challenge of the blade, especially when they see we follow the same path.
So, I’m up for a fight to prove my worth, and it doesn’t need to be one on one, we are a TEAM after-all ! I mean, Lucky here has saved my life for sure, but only by stabbing the Big Boogger who’s about to chop my head off up the “jacksie” from below if you know what I mean… he ain‘t for one on one duels, but I sure like him at my side”.
Tis true, I'm not one to go toe to toe, I prefer Grumorjok's ways but your training has been sinking in who knows one day I might even win one of our duels. I like the idea of just forcing our help cause you know screw those guys.
"I do not understand all these gods. You have a God, you have a God, they have a God, it is almost as if someone hands out the title of God to whomever asks. However, if one of you wishes to duel, I will not interrupt but it won't be me. It is beyond me why they would turn down help unless their motives are less than pure, which in that case makes them no better than the ones we chase, no?"
Mills nods along as everyone speaks. "Zanoth... Supposed to be a follower of Saxwyn. What would Saxwyn tell you to do? We'll go with whatever that is."
“I follow two gods: Zogus, whom I forsook, and Saxwyn, who showed me a new and better way. Without the old behind me to remind me of what evil is, and the new in front to show me what good is, I would not be who I am.
Drax, indeed I agree we should make no promises to them, only offer a brief... alliance. We should, of course, keep in mind our own goals.
Gor, I too would turn down the help of a wild ranger and mangy squirrel. Maybe they just need to be shown our worth and dedication to our cause. Doesn't the stag in the field first flash his antlers to show his might, and then battle for his place? Nature knows that a duel is sometimes exactly what is needed.
Mills, as to Saxwyn, I may not have a priest's knowledge, only what my mother told me and what he whispers in my dreams, but he is a warrior watching over all conflicts, inspiring heroic deeds, and rewarding cunning and strategy. If we are true to our challenge, he will support our methods, although the outcome is never guaranteed!
Lucky, as ever by my side. I do not think we should seek deadly conflict with them, only a validation of our worth, but I will not lie down to die.”

Zanoth, Scales I mean Dax what your thoughts.
Mills is scowling at the start, but raises his eyebrows in surprise at the end. He smiles. Then nods at Zanoth.
