Ertis blanches. "What do you mean, evil? Evil? Darkness? No..." he says as he struggles process this new information.
Grady gains the ability to see with darkvision as Shek'lok is tersely inspecting the inner wall. Walking along the wall and tapping, he discovers a section of the wall that is wooden. Covered in the same coat of paint, it had been impossible to see with the naked eye. The wood peels off of the wall, and Shek'lok realizes that he is holding a wooden mask, but more importantly, the writing that it was hiding underneath.

"What...what is it?" Father Ertis nervously asks at the sudden silence.

“I do not know... haven’t you seen this before Father? “ he says

He then look to the others and say.
“There’s is an inscription here. It speaks of sin, of punishment, of bind someone or something... and it says that it must punish the wicked and forgive the innocent. “ he passes the mask to Dearg. “ Jus read it backwards but not aloud yet. “ he says.
"An inscription...binding?" Ertis reads the inscription and his face turns white as a sheet. He says to Grady, "You said you felt something unholy here...this is a binding ritual. Something is bound in this room. Merris, what have you done?"
"Father, I think we've found the source of the missing men. Shek'lok, what do you make of that mask? It's been hidden in plain sight all these years, it's possible the spell is linked to this rustic artifact. We still need to find the men, it's possible they've been bound to another plain- or perhaps they're in that mask itself? Ertis, I think you should alert the captain ((forgot his name)) but one of us will escort you to and from town while the rest of us work here. Unless you have any experience with binding magic?"
Grady holds his holy symbol under his tunic as he speaks..
"I am fleet of foot and I do not meddle in the powers that be. I will escort the Father back to town and bring Joen here. Will we need the aid of the guardsmen as well?"
"Not just yet Dearg, let's not go crying dire wolf. I think we need Joen though as we move forward with the investigation. Oh, and thank you for the sight my friend. I appreciate it."
Grady claps a hand on Deargs shoulder and flashes a faint smile.
"Come father let us head back to town. We will come to you with news once everything has settled. We thank for you speaking with us and for your help."
Ertis looks quite shaken by the recent events but vigorously shakes his head.
"I agree, Joen will be needed here, but I cannot sit idly by in my home while others deal with matters of the unholy. This is my duty here."
The reputation of this band of investigators has grown throughout the village overnight, and townspeople are more than happy to direct Dearg to the elder's home. Joen wearily answers the door when Dearg knocks, having just woken up from his slumber after his nightly patrol. He quickly answers the call after the situation is explained, and returns to the cleansing house with Dearg, along with two guardsmen. After conferring with the elder, Father Ertis explains the situation to the group.
"This binding ritual is a powerful, but simple incantation. Whatever is here, it is most likely bound to the physical nature of the cleansing house. Destroying it would likely release the binding, but remove Dormay's only landmark in the process. Joen would prefer the cleansing room to be undamaged...as would many of the villagers, I would imagine.
The alternative..." Ertis sighs and collects himself once more, "Exorcism and matters of the unholy are part of my responsibilities as a priest. I know an unbinding ritual. It would require only an incantation and holy blood. I am skilled enough to do this, but I must admit I am terrified of what might come out of that dark room. I only ask that you destroy whatever is bound here for good."
"I understand you and your people want to maintain some form of tourism with the cleansing house. I have also heard the number of visitors has dwindled significantly in the passing years. The way I view it is this: we can take a chance with the unbundling ritual- BUT we don't know what will come out of a spell this old and there are other villagers and children nearby to consider. If we take this approach I would recommend a temporary evacuation until it is safely dealt with. Or: we can knock this house down, destroy the binding spell with little harm to the village and then we can help you build a newer version in its place. I like this village, I'd help you see it thrive in any way I can- and how many visitors does this truly bring currently?"
Grady surveys the guards, Joen and Ertis as he speaks, hoping to not offend any of them. His first concern is the well being of the townspeople.
Father Ertis looks to Joen for affirmation. After getting a terse nod, he turns back to the group and says, "Very well. Simply knocking the house down will most likely not work, however, If the creature is bound to its physical space. The physical nature of the building will still be intact. A simple fire would do the trick, I imagine."
Joen turns to his guards, commanding "Evacuate everyone in the village to the church. We'll let these men do their work."

"Very well," Ertis nervously states, "may I see the mask?"
Ertis takes the mask and a dagger and kneels upon the bed of the stream before its entry point into the cleansing house. He mutters a prayer, unbinding the ritual that must have taken place here so many years ago.
"You were the sin, you had no regret or remorse.
You were the source, the power and the prey.
You fed it and became part of it.
It devoured your malice, hate and desire.
The sin did not need senses, only a long arm to gather the wicked."
He draws the dagger along his forearm, allowing his blood to flow into the stream, carrying the power of his words.
"Your sin is no longer a whip bound to this chamber.
You may now leave. The innocent and the remorseful alike no longer differ to you.
You are no longer bound to this purpose."
The mask drops from his hand as his blood continues to flow into the stream, which carries it into the cleansing house. There is silence for a time as Ertis pulls a cloth from his pack, wiping the dagger and stemming the blood from his wound. The silence is broken by a clicking growl that grows to a wail carrying itself through the fog. The creature you had shared the cleansing room with reveals itself from the shadows of the structure.
The creature is horrible to look at. It is a creeping monster with almost see-through wet skin, an eyeless face, and a huge mouth filled with rows of sharp teeth. Its long, powerful arms are thick with muscle and sinew, and end in claw like hands. Thick black liquid seeps from its mouth, falling to the ground, leaving a trail of horror as it walks from the building toward you.
Upon the sight of the creature, you are hit with a massive wave of magical dread, the essence of the creature in plain sight for the first time.
