Faila, padding along next to the Lord of Autumn and keeping her attention away from the dark portents all around them, lifts her head and crest feathers up at Nikita's waving, and then slinks into the shadows, far more quietly and unobtrusively than such a large, gangly, colorful creature should be able to.
The Lord of Autumn looks upon the others and nods in agreement with Nikita's assessment, "Verily, the patrol approaches. Strike as one, and this company will find victory o'er that of these interlopers most foul."
Drawing his glaive and settling down into position alongside Faila and Nikita, he gives these two a confident grin. Raising two fingers and swirling them in the air, his cloak rustles ever so gently. Quietly, the leaves fall from his back in gentle swaying fashion, landing in a pile at his boots save for a small clump near his satchel. The clump swarms inward and quickly out, drawing a single piton from the container. [Mage Hand]
As if caught again on the breeze, the clump sails through the air, merrily dancing about the chamber. Raising higher now, it settles upon the ceiling some good distance away from the front line, pinning the piton to the surface.
The firbolg makes eye contact with Nikita and Faila, then traces with his finger from the ceiling to his palm held before them. After his finger contacts his palm, he curls this hand into a fist, raises the open palm, and meshes them together in a sign for the clash to come. A wink follows as he looks to these two to ensure they understand the plan.
The bonfire is snuffed out in a hurry as the party assumes positions in the shadows, anticipating the serpent folk's approach through the western passageway. Pressing against the walls, the party find that they are slick and damp, moss and lichen clinging to their crumbling stones, in places they are broken, revealing the mud and rock beneath. As the enemy approaches, the stench grows in intensity, causing even the most seasoned adventurer's eyes to water. Unaware of the impending ambush, the serpent folk slither closer, their grotesque shapes casting menacing shadows in the dim light.
From the shadows emerge three figures, their leader towering over the other two. Their twisted forms were once human, but now bear the likeness of serpents, their scaly bodies adorned with snake-like heads. The leader's hands have been warped, replaced with long, wicked blades, while the smaller figures brandish curved ceremonial daggers. A hissing sound fills the air as the leader's flickering tongue issues orders to its underlings. It is a horrifying sight, but the party remains unnoticed, providing the perfect chance to launch a surprise attack.
ALL - Please roll initiative. You will have a surprise round before the creatures can act.
Boyd squeezes into the ambush position, pressing himself uncomfortably against the obsidian slime that wreathes the underground labyrinth. He silently pulls out his small knife and clutches it in his ham hock fist, but his gaze never wavers from the corridor where the group expects to see these snake creatures in any moment. "We're really in it now..." he whispers nearly silently to no one in particular. He looks sideways to Faila for a split moment, wondering how much of the girl is left inside that strange bird-lizard creature.
As the sounds of the snake patrol get louder, he takes a step away from the wall and raises his knife over his head, ready to throw.
The scaled and feathered creature as silent and still in the shadows as a predator waiting to pounce, her attention is riveted on the hideous snake men. An instinctual reluctance to draw notice keeps her pinned to the shadows...
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
As the others begin to make their preparations for combat, the Lord of Autumn hums a haunting, ancient tune in low enough tones so as to not alert the interlopers. As he does so, he pulls a small trinket from his satchel: an antique wine tap of sorts who's faded bronze finish glistens with unnatural life in the dim torchlight. He clutches it close, breathes a deep breath, returns it to his satchel and grips his glaive with a wide grin on his face.
A Serpentine Scuffle - Surprise Round - Initiative & Placing
Silent as shadows, the party members position themselves as the unsuspecting serpentfolk slither by. With a sudden ferocity, the creatures find themselves ensnared in the merciless grip of the ambush. Up close, it's clear that these serpents are no ordinary beasts, but creatures of a more sinister nature. Their scales, gnarled with age and experience, bear the marks of countless battles. The stench that emanates from their twisted bodies is enough to make even the bravest warrior quiver in fear, and their faces are twisted in a grotesque mockery of humanity. Born from some dark abyss, these serpents are surely the harbingers of doom for any that cross their path.
Your mind races as you try to identify the creatures before you. Their twisted forms seem to defy the natural world, an affront to the very gods themselves. But it is not just their physical appearance that unnerves you. Something about them seems... off. Their movements are too calculated, too intelligent, for mere beasts. And those robes they wear... it is as if they mock the very notion of reverence, turning it into something perverse and twisted. You shudder to think what kind of ceremonies these creatures might conduct. It is clear that you are dealing with something beyond your understanding, something truly alien in nature.

Nikita - The moment has arrived, and you can wait no longer. The serpentfolk are slithering closer, their snake-like heads swivelling in your direction. One false move and the element of surprise will be lost. Your courage surges, and you steel yourself for action. The time for hesitation is gone, it is your turn to strike.
Battlemap:
Initiative Order:
Nikita & Thumbtack - 16 - Purple Wand Symbol & Small Purple Shield Symbol
Still concentrating on her protective abjuration (Protection from Evil and Good), Nikita steps forward (south) five feet to engage the first of the smaller serpentfolk while leaving room for Faila and Aruum to attack. Thumbtack flies in a tight loop to distract the enemy and back to Nikita's shoulder (help action) with Flyby. Nikita follows in quick succession as green flames envelop her thrusting rapier, arcing to the second adjacent foe.
Attack: on Serpentfolk #1 with Green Flame Blade at advantage due to Thumbtack'shelp. To Hit: 24 Rapier damage: 9 piercing to smaller Serpentfolk #1. Green Flame Blade damage: 5 fire, arcing immediately to the other adjacent smaller Serpentfolk #2 (no saving throw).
While she is concentrating on Protection from Evil and Good, all attacks from aberrations, celestials, elementals, fey, fiends, and undead have disadvantage against Nikita and she cannot be possessed, charmed or frightened by them.
Hoping for a quick slaughter, Boyd hurls his dagger as soon as Nikita steps down to face the smaller foes. He aims at Nikita's primary target, as its attention is immediately drawn to the Elven wizard. "Now!" he yells to the group.
Attack: 18 Damage: 22
(at sepentfolk #1)
Edit: Bonus action steady aim before hand. Second roll (advantage) 23
The Lord of Autumn bellows out a mighty "HOOO!!" before launching himself into the fray. Charging forward while lowering his massive shoulder to tackle the back of the unsuspecting snake beast engaged with Nikita. A wicked grin can be seen across his face Boyd's dagger whizzes by to the firbolg's intended mark.
Athletics contested check to knock Serpentfolk #1 prone (w/Advantage): 11 (original roll) & 30 (rolled in game log)
(Adding this just in case a minor retcon is permissible)
As the group carefully places themselves to either side of the corridor, Meressa reaches out a hand and lays it on the Lord of Autumn's shoulder with a whispered, "Be careful," as she casts guidance on him.
Nikita seizes the initiative, emerging from the shadows with her rapier wreathed in green flames. Ever loyal to her mistress, Thumbtack attacks at the serpentfolk's eyes, creating a momentary distraction. The burning blade finds its mark, piercing the creature's scaly side and filling the air with the acrid stench of burning flesh. Flames eagerly leap from the blade and engulf the adjacent creature (serpentfolk #2), consuming it in a fiery embrace. In response, the serpentfolk lets out an anguished hiss, whirling around and preparing to retaliate with deadly force.
Boyd's Turn
Emboldened by Nikita's bravery, Boyd unleashes his magical dagger with a fierce throw, aimed at the serpentfolk (#1) she had just wounded. The blade finds its mark, piercing the creature's scaled skin and drawing blood. His command echoes in the cramped chamber, urging the others to join the battle and strike down their serpentine foes.
Lord of Autumn's Turn
Barrelling forward, the Lord of Autumn yells his challenge and catches the serpentfolk unaware.
A Serpentine Scuffle - Surprise Round Continued...
Lord of Autumn's Turn
With a strength that could only be described as legendary, the Lord of Autumn charges forward and slams into the serpentfolk (#1) with such ferocity that its lithe and agile body crumples to the ground. The creature writhes and hisses frantically, but it is now prone.
Aruum's Turn
The courageous Aruum steps forward, closing the gap between himself and his foe, a mixture of delight and fear evident in his half-squeal. He whirls his hands in a mystical, if not slightly over-exaggerated, manner, preparing to unleash his arcane powers upon the serpentfolk.
An apparitional hand, bearing an otherworldly semblance of a goblinoid, manifests above the prone serpentfolk (#1). Descending with languid grace, it makes contact with the creature's body, its ghostly touch causing the flesh to wither and decay, releasing a nauseating scent into the air. Aruum bulks at the stench, his bravado momentarily dropping.
Meresaa - The chaos unfolds before your eyes in a blur of motion and violence. The Lord of Autumn's brutal force brings down one of the serpentfolk, and Aruum wastes no time in unleashing his own twisted brand of magic upon the hapless creature. The air is thick with the stench of death and decay as you take stock of the situation, aware that any hesitation or misstep could mean the difference between victory and defeat. You ready yourself as you spot your opportunity to act, it is your turn.
Seeing chaos break out in a confined space, Meresaa's sense of self-preservation kicks in as she does some quick mental calculations of distance, angles, and time.
She hikes her robe up in both hands and she bolts. Or so it seems for a moment.
Action & movement: Dash around the far side of the stairs and come to a stop above the NW corner (15ft from Aruum).
As Meresaa turns the corner around the stairs, between her and the cackling little goblin flies a streak of color and feathers, hurtling from the shadows. Faila's long feathered tail streams behind her like a banner as she launches straight through the air, colliding with the largest of the serpentfolk, attempting to knock him prone while she slashes into him with her claws and teeth.
Pounce. If the deinonychus moves at least 20 feet straight toward a creature and then hits it with a claw attack on the same turn, that target must succeed on a DC 12 Strength saving throw or be knocked prone. If the target is prone, the deinonychus can make one bite attack against it as a bonus action.
First claw attack (with advantage from being unseen): 23 to hit, 9 damage
Second claw attack: 11 to hit, 8 damage
Bite attack: 11 to hit, 10 damage
Bonus action bite attack if Serpent is successfully knocked prone: 6 to hit, 5 damage
Still concentrating on her protective abjuration (Protection from Evil and Good), Nikita stands her ground next to the suddenly prone lesser Serpentfolk (#1) that the Lord of Autumn had knocked flat. Green flames flare from her blade once more as she dances and thrusts downward with precision.
Attack: by Nikita on lesser Serpentfolk #1 with her rapier and Green Flame Blade at advantage due to enemy being prone. To Hit: 26 (Natural 20) Rapier damage: 9 piercing to lesser Serpentfolk #1 (Low crit damage). Green Flame Blade additional damage: 5 fire, arcing immediately to the other adjacent smaller Serpentfolk #2 (no saving throw).
While she is concentrating on Protection from Evil and Good, all attacks from aberrations, celestials, elementals, fey, fiends, and undead have disadvantage against Nikita and she cannot be possessed, charmed or frightened by them.
Thumbtack flies in a tight loop to flap her wings in the face of the second lesser Serpentfolk (#2) and back to Nikita's shoulder (help action) with Flyby. (The next attack against seprentfolk #2, who is notprone is made at advantage).
Meresaa darts through the shadows with deft footwork, slipping past the serpentfolks' keen senses before they even know she was there. She positions herself strategically behind Nikita and Aruum, ready to strike again when the moment is right.
Faila's Turn
Faila moves with a feral grace, her muscles tensing as she pounces upon the unsuspecting serpentfolk. With a guttural snarl, she unleashes a devastating attack, her razor-sharp claws slicing through the creature's flesh. The serpentfolk hisses in pain as it falls to the ground, its scaled back shredded by Faila's savage assault. Blood flows from its wounds, covering the stones beneath it as it writhes in agony.
Strength Saving Throw: 8
((Faila - Please make the second claw and both bite attacks at advantage due to the creature becoming prone.))
Faila's eyes flash with a feral light as she continues to assault the serpentfolk leader. Her claws slice through the air with deadly accuracy, but the creature's nimbleness proves to be a formidable defence. Undeterred, Faila lunges forward and clamps down on the serpentfolk's arm, her razor-sharp teeth tearing into its flesh. The creature lets out a blood-chilling hiss as it tries to shake her off, but Faila's grip is too strong. She bites down again, this time sinking her teeth deep into the serpentfolk's shoulder, ripping through scales and sinew alike. The smell of blood fills the air as the creature writhes in agony, desperately trying to escape Faila's relentless assault.
Faila, padding along next to the Lord of Autumn and keeping her attention away from the dark portents all around them, lifts her head and crest feathers up at Nikita's waving, and then slinks into the shadows, far more quietly and unobtrusively than such a large, gangly, colorful creature should be able to.
