Trumpets blow again, and you hear more yelling as the battle seems to grow stronger. And now you see smoke rising...
Rain will lead the party toward the battle by the most direct route, with guidance from Jorzaeramon to avoid any large, open areas.
If they get close enough that the fighting seems like it's within 200 feet or so, then Rain will slow down to a slow pace of movement. From there, he'll attempt to move forward with stealth to try to avoid being seen and to make sure that they don't just blunder into a battle.
Assuming the party follows, you walk towards the battle until you can clearly hear swords clashing. You are 200 feet from the battle and can tell there is a battle happening outside the city walls. You can see the king's forces are slowly pushing the threat back, but can't see the battle without going through the city gates, or climbing that ladder over there...

(OOC: I still don't have a great sense of this town / city's scale. Does the ladder lead to the top of the city wall? How tall is the wall? Is it like a 10-foot tall "fence" or pallisade?
Or is it more like a proper castle wall, wide enough to have defenders on top and battlements?
)
Rain stops and sheathes one of his scimitars. He waves the group forward so that they can huddle up behind him. Once they're close enough, he says, "It sounds like the battle is still outside the city wall, so we are safe enough for now. But we need a better look at the forces. Salchar, do you want to send your hawk to spy? Stray arrows could be a danger! In any case, I'm a good climber, so I was going to go up the ladder to try to get a better look." He points up ahead, a little closer to the ladder and the city wall but still under the cover of the first buildings inside the walls. "You could all wait up there until I check that it's safe enough to join me up top."
Jorzaeramon says nothing. As the group gathers, he leans his back against the wall of the nearest building, tapping his black rod idly on his palm. He's trying to look relaxed, but he keeps turning his had to check the street behind them and windows and roofs of the buildings around them.
The wall is a 12-foot stone wall wide enough for someone to walk on. Pearl Village is actually a small kingdom, despite its being named "village", as it was a lot smaller back in the day.

(OOC: Sure. I don't have a clear picture of the scene, but I assume that there's an open space between the wall and the first buildings, and the ladder we're talking about leads to the top of the city wall. I'm not sure how wide that "open space" is, but Rain was going to leave the party sheltering in the cover around the first buildings inside the wall while he crosses that open space and climbs the ladder to the top of the wall.)
Rain isn't sure whether all of the city guards know about the Pearl Defenders, so if there are any guards or watchmen inside the wall or on top of the wall, he will introduce himself as "Rain, one of the so-called Perl Defenders, the group that the king has sanctioned to help with the city's defense. I've come to get a look at the enemy." If he sees Sand or anyone else he knows, he'll go to them first.
Once he's on top of the wall, he'll carefully approach the outside edge, keeping behind the parapet, and briefly look out at the battle. If there's no threat within the city's wall, and if the active fighting isn't too close to the wall outside, he'll gesture for the others to join him on top of the wall.
If the fighting is close (within regular shortbow range), he'll just try to find a safe spot to get a careful look at the state of the battle for a couple of minutes before returning to the party. In particular, he'd like to see
Relative size of the enemy force and the city's army on the field
Approximate size of the forces (e.g., Are they fighting off a raiding party of 40 goblins, or is there an army of hundreds or thousands outside the walls?)
Who is the enemy? Does it look like the goblins and hobgoblins they've already encountered? Or is this some other force? Can he see whether it's humans, goblinoids, or something else?
Does the enemy force appear to be organized or just attacking randomly?
Can he see who is leading or directing the enemy forces?
Is everyone on foot or are there mounted troops?
Beyond regular infantry and archers, are there any exotic elements at play? (e.g., catapults or other siege weapons, ogres, spell casters, etc.)
While he's watching, what is the state of the battle? Is it still a close back-and-forth? Is one side clearly winning or has already won, with the opponents in a rout?
You climb the wall, where dozens of archers are spread out, firing on the enemy. Some of them glance at you, then look back towards the battle.
This time, it isn't a bunch of weak goblins. There are a few dozen goblins following behind about a dozen orcs. Two pairs of goblins at on the back on the left side operating some device, ready to launch a flare. There is an ogre at the back, with some goblins provoking it to attack the walls, and it seems to be getting angry. There is also another group out in the distance.
It seems the king's men are very nervous, as the enemy is almost ready to break into the city, but it appears backup may be on the way for both sides. This attack was definitely meant to deal damage.
A few of the king's men have horses, but most are on the ground using swords.
Rain was going to leave the party sheltering in the cover around the first buildings inside the wall while he crosses that open space and climbs the ladder to the top of the wall.
As Rain jogs across the open space and climbs the ladder, Jorzaeramon sets down his pack. He gestures with one hand and points with the black rod he carries. A stack of barrels and storage crates about 5' high seems to materialize, arcing out about 5' from the wall of the building. The barrels are labelled "Water" in small block letters, and the crates are labelled as various common textiles, like "Linen." Jor squats down behind this cover and gestures for the others to join him in the little alcove formed by the boxes. "It's only an illusion, so it won't protect us from stray arrows, but there's no reason to draw attention to ourselves this close to a battle."
(Sorry for the delay on this, I’m unsure how to add text color from mobile so I’ll spread out any dialogue between Salcahr and Corric to make it more obvious)
Salchar follows Jor behind his illusion as does Corric. The halfling speaks out. “Shouldn’t we be helping instead of hiding? If they break through would that not cause innocent civilians to get caught in the crossfire.”
Corric will cast bless on himself, Rain, and Saralyn if the party engages the goblin force.
The fire genasi nods with Corric but shows a bit more hesitation “from sporadic sneak attacks to an all out assault on the walls of the kingdom. Either they’ve grown in confidence or this is a diversion. Do we join the fray? Maybe find a good spot to flank and support the guard?”

(OOC: KingOrc, I'm kind of waiting for clarification to my questions in the DM thread before Rain calls for the party to join him on the wall.
Can the party fight from the wall without interfering with the city's guards? Does it look like it will be at least several more rounds before the enemy makes it to / through the wall? Is the main gate still open or already closed? Is there a captain organizing the defense that Rain can identify?
It's going to take at least 2 rounds for the whole party to get on top of wall and ready to attack.
If Rain thinks that they can get up the wall and usefully help in the defense from there, he'll call the party up to the wall.
If Rain thinks that the orcs will break into the city before the party can even get up the ladder, then there's no point in getting the party up there. In this case, he'll go back down the ladder and back to the party so that they can decide whether to help from the ground or just retreat to somewhere safer.
edited to add: KingOrc, if you're trying to get the party to a specific encounter, feel free to have Rain make a decision that helps you get us there. If you're trying to leave everything completely open, then I guess you'll need to provide a lot more details so that we have a clearer picture of the current area and the battle outside the gate and can make a more informed decision.
Rain is not afraid of fighting, but he's a ranger, not a soldier. He is also worried about putting the party in too much danger. He's happy to help if they can do that without too much risk, but he's also fine with leaving the battle to the city's army and focusing on their core mission with the temple.
The guards are just past the doorway of the gate, and the goblins outside. You can fight without interfeering with the gaurds.
The gate is 10 feet wide and is currently raised, and there seems to be trouble getting it down. (The gate door is oarge iron bars that can be raised up and down to open and close the door.)
The fight is fairly close to to the gates, and the farthest goblins are only 15 feet away (except for the two with the ogre, which are about 25 feet back.)
The king's men are doing fairly well blocking them out, but the goblin force is slowly moving up. There are occasional men who come to helo fight off the raid. There are many fallen for both side.
There seems to be nobody leading the king's men, they are just fighting. Clearly they know what they are doing. There are many orcs, although one of them seems to have the nicer armor and has tattoos along his arms, he may be the leader. He is fighting at the front line.
The goblins might break through in a few rounds, altough the gate may me shut before then. Some men are currently unwrapping chains.
Behind the raid is a large expanse of desert, with the temple barely visible.
And if you aren't considering combat, you may be able to get down the wall in an area without any battle. Maybe somebody here can help you out.
A random crow lands on Corric's head. (idk, it just popped into my head, and I decided "Hm, this is a good idea." My DM power is giving me too many ideas.)

Rain decides that they'll be reasonably well-protected behind the cover of the parapet wall, and they may be able to help turn the tide of the battle. In any case, they may be safer among the city guard if the orcs break through than they would be fleeing through the city streets.
Rain rushes back to the inside edge of the wall. As he strings his long bow, he makes a high-pitched chirp that's easy to hear above the noise of the battle outside. As soon as anyone from the party looks his way, you see Rain waving you to join him on the wall. "Come quick! To arms! Orcs! Goblins! Ogre!" Rain waits to make sure that they heard him and are on their way. His bow now strung, Rain joins the battle.
Initiative: 7 (in game log)
Rain moves to the parapet wall and tries to find an open arrow slit or at least a position behind the battlements that will give him 1/2 or 3/4 cover from the attackers below. He'd like a bit of an angled shot to the ogre, so he'd prefer a place toward the left along the wrong, offset a little from the line between the ogre and the wall. Rain will focus first on the ogre. He figures that if the ogre makes it to the wall, there's no way that the defenders will be able to hold the gate against it. And since the ogre is almost as tall as the wall, if the defenders run, it could probably crawl over the wall without a ladder or any other aid.
Rain recites a mantra that his mentor taught him, focusing on the ogre before he fires an arrow. Rain shifts to stay behind the cover of the wall in between arrows, but if the ogre approaches the wall, Rain will use his remaining movement to move along the wall, again to his left, putting as much distance as he can between him and the ogre.
I guess that the party will use the current round just crossing to the wall and climbing the ladder. When the party joins him on top of the wall, he calls out to them, suggesting,"Focus on the ogre!"
Movement: Move to the parapet wall and then possibly move along the wall if the ogre approaches. Action: Attack, Longbow (150/600): 18 Damage: 8 Free Action: Talking

While they waited for Rain's signal, Jorzaeramon realized that the fighting was getting close. He generally saves his spells until he absolutely needs them, but he's starting to feel vulnerable this close to an open battle. Jor doesn't think of himself as a fighter and doesn't want to be a hero. He just hopes to make it out of this battle alive. He holds up his black rod and, focusing on the crystal ball at the top, he casts mage armor on himself.
Up on the wall, Rain signals to the group. Jor waits to see what the others do. If they all move toward the wall to join Rain, he glances behind him and up the empty street, but he quickly decides that he'll be safer with the party in case the attackers get through the city wall. He dismisses the illusion of the barrels and crates and then uses this round to run to the wall and up the ladder.
(OOC: I don't know the distance, but if the wall is within 30 feet, they should have enough movement to make it to the top of the wall this round and hopefully join the battle next round. 30' (hiding spot to the ladder) + 24' (12-foot tall wall, 2':1' movement for climbing) + 6' to move toward the outer parapet.)
Movement: Move to the wall and up the ladder. Action: dash for a total of 60' of movement Free Action: dismissing the illusion
An arrow pierces the ogre, which yelps as it looks towards the direction of the wall, not sure where the arrow came from.
Some of the archers, not knowing who you are talking to and not knowing anybody else coming, assume you are talking to them and began to fire on the ogre. The ogre stomps forwards as several arrows pierce it, and it picks up an unlucky goblin and throws it at the wall, knocking down two guards.
Corric looks curiously at the crow as it lands on his head, "Uh hello there?" He pauses to see if the crow will say anything before heading to the wall as he casts bless on Jor, Rain and Salchar. (Corric Initiative: 14 in gamelog). He's only got 25ft of movement so I'm unsure if he makes it all the way to the top.
Salchar breaks from cover and rushes up himself to meet their foes (Initiative 4) He takes cover behind the wall and pokes his head out to cast Grease on the largest concentration of enemies (including the ogre if possible) "Direct damage isn't always necessary for winning a battle, but I have a plan! If you've got fire, I suggest you use it now..."

Or did he just get close enough in round 1 to cast bless on the party members (assuming that they're in range) and then in round 2, he makes it up to the wall and takes some other action?)

(Was that to Jor? If so, as part of round 1, Jorzaeramon asks for clarification.)
Jor makes it to the parapet wall, toward the right and on the opposite "side" of the ogre from Rain. He hopes that Rain already has the ogre's attention so that he won't be in as much danger. As he loads a bolt into his crossbow, he response to Salchar, "I can summon a bonfire on the ground, but where?"

Action: dash for a total of 60' of movement
Free Action: dismissing the illusion
Initiative: 18 (in game log)

(OOC: Did Corric dash to the wall in round 1 and cast bless in round 2?
(Update: I adjusted the narrative to fit with the initiative better.)
