Ezid stops as the Teifling beside him holds his hand out, "Oh, um, alrighty then, let us await some more information then". Ezid then holds the small sack of coin with the 20 gold to his side whilst the group listen to what the group of 4 opposite them have to say.
Mordekai, you look closely at the capes to try to discern the symbol. You see a large tree with a castle sitting up on its branches. However, you do not recognize this symbol from anywhere.
"Thank you," the Aarokocra replies seeing the bag of gold pieces. "Your tribute to the Swords of Burbury will not go unnoticed."
Iefyr stops drumming immediately. amiliar with the type of people to go around collecting "tolls" from his experience patrolling the grasslands and edges of the forest, Iefyr looks suspicious. He steps up next to Mordekai. His hand rests casually on the hilt of his sword. "Yeah let's hear it. Who are you all? Why do we owe you anything?"
A castle on a tree? Mordekai was familiar enough with the idea of homes in a tree, but not a castle. And Swords of Burbury? Who were these guys? I’m certain it won’t, comrade; but perhaps you did not listen to initial question. For what service will this tribute go? For support of cause? For passage of way? Just for a laugh?
Iefyr, you also do not recognize the hand sewn insignia on the back of their carpet made capes.
"We are the Swords of Burbury. No money is required. We only ask for tribute," the elf replies. You see the other elf and halfling standing behind him, laughing towards one another as they push and scuffle around with each other.
"The Swords of Burbury huh? well, if this gold goes towards protecting good people, I see that a good enough reason for them to have it, would you agree Mr Teifling sir?" Ezid responds whilst staring towards the symbols, intrigued, before turning to face Mordekai.
Arcana check on the symbols to try and see if they represent anything of magical nature?
"We uphold only the noblest of ideals as the Swords of Burbury." The elf looks at the dragonborn, eager to collect the coin.
With his hand extended, the Aarakocra looks over at the Half-Elf and replies, "Tribute of coin of course. So we may continue our noble ventures and protect these lands."
Ezid, with your arcana checks on the symbols, there seems to be no connection to any magical symbols you know.
As you hand the gold to the elf, he seems to drop the bag onto the floor.
"Silly Geoff," the Aarakocra laughs as he bends down to pick up the gold.
"Well, the Swords of Burbury thank you. Safe travels on your way. And as a courtesy, if you see some footprints leading off into some woods, I suggest avoiding the trail."
With that said, the four adventurers continue heading south as you continue north.

Mordekai felt everything pass and his eyes and head attempted to follow through with what had happened... were they conned into handing over coin? Was their a second meaning in this meeting?

Mordekai, as you think back on the events that just occured, you start looking for clues that not everything was as it seemed. What you realize is that something was off from the people you interacted with. It was not their words that were not truthful, at least not completely. When they said they wanted to do what was noblest, they meant it as far as what they think is noble. What was more off was their capes and the way they acted. Probably most peculiar was when the elf dropped the bag of coins. The bag was in his hands yet if fell to the ground.
Cozubia watches this take place from the back of the party. "Cozubia finds this odd." he replies as he watches the band of "adventurers" continue down the path. "This path they mention, should we check into it if we find it?"

"Ah man, what did you give them coin for?" Carmen demanded as she caught up to them. She, too is curious about the symbol. "You are way too trusting," she says to Ezid.
