"This doesn't make sense!" he says to those at the table. Quill glances at the others, making some calculations in his head.
"Demoiselle, you are empowered with light from Usoara, correct? We must follow Warrel. Something's happening, greater than this, and we need to find out what. I think Warrel may lead us to the answer."
As soon as Demoiselle responds negatively or affirmatively, Quill jumps out of his seat and begins running towards the gate, praying to Usoara for help.
(Edited because I didnt realize witnessed all the chaos)
I would like to cast Healing Word on both of the initiates who fell, restoring, if possible, 7 and 4 hit points. Then I will rush after Friar Bernard, also wielding my quarterstaff.
I pull my dagger from its sheath and hold it out toward the darkness. “I’m with you on this,” I say to Quill. “But Ihope this isn’t some sort of trap... Warrel didn’t cast the darkness, someone else here did.....”
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
Esvaris: As your spell of healing flows into the two novice initiates their eyes flutter. One sits up, gasping. The other sinks down against the fountain, crying quietly in Sister Naphtali's arms. Esvaris and Friar Bernard rush bravely through the gates, the magical darkness engulfing them, they disappear from sight.
Esvaris: As you break through the darkness and out onto the steps of the basilica, the last light of dawn shines directly into your eyes. Suddenly, something shockingly fast slams into you from the left side, shoving you into the goliath next to you. (Warrel's attack: 20 second roll due to advantage: 20 , if successful then damage is slam7 plus surprise attack10.)
Quill and Demoiselle enter the darkness just behind Esvaris and Friar Bernard.
Quill and Demoiselle come bursting out of the darkness moments later, just in time to see a strangely taller looking Warrel slam into Esvaris with strength he did not previously appear to have. Esvaris collides with the goliath next to him. He rushes towards you astonishingly fast making a (multiattack) slam into Quill. (Attack: 18)
Esvaris, Quill, and Demoiselle roll initiative. (Friar Bernard's initiative: 16 and Warrel's initiative after surprise attack: 8)
Korlan: Holding his dagger before him as he sees his friends boldly leap into the darkness before him, the halfling hears Dawnlord Menges telling everyone to remain calm and stay seated. "There is no need to panic. Usoara has clearly protected us from the darkness and shown her will against that treacherous...treach...tr..." His voice trails off as if his throat was squeezing shut. Turning, Korlan sees Menges thumping his own chest with a closed fist, trying to get air out as his face swells. People around him begin backing away in fear. All except his older brother, Brackus, who rises and pats him on the back with a concerned look. Lord Atterley stammers, "I say, what is this? What are you at?" Menges slumps down into his seat, and looks up at his brother and father in wide eyed fear. He clutches at Brackus' shirt sleeve, clearly in distress. Brother Annan rushes to their table, then looks sharply at the food on Dawnlord Menges plate, decorative flower petals scattered around it. "Poison," he says.
Lord Brackus furiously shoves the dishes and decorations off the table and pushes his brother to lay down on top of it, unbuttoning the Dawnlord's robe near the throat. "There is no time! Someone help him!" he yells. "Are you not healers?"
As soon as it's Demoiselle's turn she's going to dispel the darkness using:
Channel Divinity: Radiance of the Dawn
Starting at 2nd level, you can use your Channel Divinity to harness sunlight, banishing darkness and dealing radiant damage to your foes.
As an action, you present your holy symbol, and any magical darkness within 30 feet of you is dispelled. Additionally, each hostile creature within 30 feet of you must make a Constitution saving throw. A creature takes radiant damage equal to 2d10 + your cleric level on a failed saving throw, and half as much damage on a successful one. A creature that has total cover from you is not affected.
I rush over to Menges on the table. I put my hands to his chest and cast cure wounds. This cures 8 HP. I look over at Brother Annan, “who could have done something like this?”
Demoiselle raises her holy symbol of Usoara against the unnatural darkness. As she calls out in faith, light pushes forth like an unstoppable shield from the flame haired beauty. It forces the darkness to retreat until it dissipates to nothingness. Radiance streaks out to attack Warrel even as he is attacking Quill. (Warrel's constitution save: 11) (edit after roll: roll 2d10+4 for radiant damage, Demoiselle)
Friar Bernard dodges around Esvaris, makes a leap and brings his quarterstaff down in a powerful arc. (attack: 6)
Korlan: Dawnlord Menges is able to suck in air finally, thanks to your healing, but he is still poisoned and his eyes seem unfocused. Brother Annan closes his eyes and places his hands on either side of the Dawnlord's head. He whispers a prayer to Usoara and power seems to roll visibly down his arms and into the sick man. He casts lesser restoration expelling the poison from the body. It wells up in Menges' mouth and spills over onto his cheeks. Menges coughs weakly and, with the aid of Annon, rises to his feet again. Long braided black hair coming loose from the bun at his neck, Brother Annon shakes his head finally in reply to your question. "I do not know. But in a place this full of healers, it can not have been meant as more than a distraction." Lifting the other man's arm over his shoulders, the tall dark-skinned man helps him to a chair.
Demoiselle, Esvaris, and Quill: Warrel, blasted back by the radiant damage while leaping out of the way of the goliath's attack, lands crouched at the bottom of the stairs to the basilica. The market behind him, with the last of its tents and stalls being packed away for the night, seems so peaceful as Warrel snarls in a decidedly 'not-Warrel' voice. "I tried, darn your eyes! What I am is not my fault. But your goddess rejected me anyway." He spits at Esvaris and hisses, "You told me not to worry, that she would take anyone, that she would help me." His body seems to be transforming as his voice deepens and roughens, "You lied!" Leaning forward onto the steps his fists hit the stone with a thud and then curl into monstrous paws with razor sharp claws. He elongates and grows a tail, changing so quickly that your eyes can barely register the blurring distortions. A mane sprouts from around his still vaguely humanoid face and long wicked-looking quills grow from his head and tail. Friar Bernard shouts, "Ware! Manticore!"
Initiative order (Bernard 22 and Warrel 20 already went):
It seems good to attack the manticore (which is not, I now know, a weremanticore). As I attack, I will say, "If you were honest in your intentions, penitent at heart, the goddess would have accepted you. You need to leave." I make a 2-handed quarter staff attack before making a spinning kick for two unarmed strikes (flurry of blows; 1 ki point).
“Who would have poisoned you Dawnlord?” I ask Menges.
After receiving the response from Menges, I hear a commotion and turn to see the fight (I assume). I rush toward the fight with dagger in hand to assist my fellow followers.
Esvaris and Demoiselle: The elf strikes with his quarterstaff as the creature dodges and weaves away from his kicks. The manticore's entire form seems to ripple for a moment and it snarls in pain at Esvaris. Demoiselle casts a magical light that sets the stairs and a few flower pots to glowing an unnatural color. The manticore attempts to dodge out of the light. (Dex save: 12) It passes just in front of Warrel as he spins to the side.
(Esvaris should also make a dex save to see if he is lit by the Faerie Fire )
Korlan: The Dawnlord shakes his blonde head and coughs weakly. "I don't know. Perhaps..." his eyes search the faces around him, "someone who does not want me to be elected High Lord." A fit of coughing shakes him and he waves you away. Turning, you see that the magical darkness at the gate has been dispelled. Everyone in the atrium is watching in horror as Esvaris fights a terrifying beast on the steps, Demoiselle creates a magical light and Friar Bernard rises to his feet.
Quill gasps.
And that's all I have to say about that.
Demoiselle nodded. "Oui, let's go!"
