Progo holds his hands out to the sides. "You spotted us a mile a way. We are indeed here to rid you of the nuisance that did you wrong. We hunt the beast as we speak and sorry to say we must keep our visit short and to the point. Please tell us everything you saw the night this happened. Any and all details are useful."
“Of corse! We will help you any way we can! I caught a glimpse of it one night” the young man says. “It was a huge, terrifying thing. Multiple heads that moved like serpents! The soldiers of the guard had come to drive it off, but it ate several of them whole before the rest fled. I heard them call it Thessalhydra, probably due to the whole multiple heads thing”
”Bah!” The old woman retorts. “ ‘tain’t no thessal-whatsit. Owlbears it all it was. There’s them owlbears in these here woods. No sense of everyone gettin’ in such a tizzy ‘bout a few little ‘ol’ owlbears.”
”Mother, you were asleep the whole time. You didn’t see that thing. It was horrible” the young one says. He looks back to you, “I could hear it retreat off into the wood south west of here just before dawn.” He indicates in that direction. “My senile, old mother here is at least right about one thing: there are owlbears around, and other things, too. When I dared venture out it the woods beyond our land a could hear creatures chattering to each other in the shadows.” He drops his voice low and shifts his eyes back and forth, “I’ve also heard rumours of a cursed cave. Those who are foolish enough to enter are never heard from again. Maybe the beast has something to do with that.”
“That is all just rumours. It could be just the other lads around town trying to scare one another. …But I have seen an adventurer or two come through these parts intending to return and never did.” The young man adds
"Were the guards able to wound the beast? They obviously got close enough to be digested, Progo wonders if they may have able to poke it with the big sticks they carry."
Progo ponders for a sec, "Yes we should be off as time is not on Progo's side. If blood was shed, we shall find it on our way. This cave is new information, as promising as it may seem, we should follow the trial first and see if it leads us to this cave. If not connected we can search the cave after the beast has been dealt with another day." Progo turns and waves to the older woman "We shall scare the owlbears back into the forest so that your orchard can have some peace to regrow. Farwell." Turns back to the man and nods in appreciation.
Thalron allows Progo to turn him in the direction of Southwest, where the lad had indicated the beast’s retreat, since he had been looking in a completely different direction. (Due to his previous skill check)
(Could we do some light clean-up at the orchard while we attune to the Ring of Protection? Or do you want to hand-wave it and say we’re already attuned?)
Progo turns back to the man and reaches out and puts his hand on the man shoulder. "You did the right thing, trained guards were being eaten, so I don't think getting yourself killed would have helped anything. Your mother and this orchard are better off that you made the right decision. Do not forget this, Progo will not." Progo claps the man's shoulder one last time before turning back to push Thalron in right direction.

You’ll have to spend a short rest to attune to them to gain their benefits.

Progo thinks for a moment "Progo wouldn't mind having one of those little rings for himself, very handy little buggers. But Progo feels our limit on time is greater then the need of trinkets. There will be time to admire our gifts soon." He turn back to the rest of the group in turn, "Besides I believe everyone here came prepared to deal with this monster and we didn't have the rings then. Useful, yes. Required, Progo thinks not."
As you exit the area you notice that the area that the monster battled the Guard is pockmarked on the ground and trees and corroded by something acidic.
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
As a acid and poison connoisseur, progo would like to investigate some of the pockmarks to see if it will tell him anything (not there would be any samples but he does carry empty vials incase he can collect ingredients)

" Hydra...owlbears....cursed cave....got it."
" Can you point out a direction for the cursed cave or the path leading to it?", Savitri said with a wink at the young lad.
"Were the guards able to wound the beast? They obviously got close enough to be digested, Progo wonders if they may have able to poke it with the big sticks they carry."
"It is getting late. We should go investigate the forest" Fred suggests

“I’m sorry,” he says “I was scared and hid. I don’t know if it was wounded. All I know is it went that way.” And he indicates to the Southwest.

"Keep your nose to the trail, for now we hunt!"
You’ll have to spend a short rest to attune to them to gain their benefits.
“Thank you!” He says “Gods be with you!”
Savitri turned to Progo, " The others are likely going to need a little time to have full use of the sorcerous items we were given."
" Shall we venture a ways down the trail while they do so?"
Progo thinks for a moment "Progo wouldn't mind having one of those little rings for himself, very handy little buggers. But Progo feels our limit on time is greater then the need of trinkets. " Then lets go."

Savitri pointed it out, " Acidic spit or blood.....good to know."

Yeah, with that you can tell that it is from acid saliva that it could spit at range.
