Elsara, seeing that everyone else has retreated, now takes up the rope after the others. Once she is up, she'll pull the rope to make it more difficult for the ratmen to follow.
The rat men open fire on the rope as the whole group ascends but the crossbow bolts either miss or bounce off the more heavily armored adventurers. You end up on top. Squeaking continues from the bottom of the whole for a while. Judging by the sound, it seems more ratmen has gathered down. The squeaking soon fades however, as the ratmen give up and retreat back to the darkness.
Barry says, "So, uh... is everything alright down there?"

Elsara will look over the others to see how badly they are wounded (and to check if anyone could've potentially caught anything from the bites). "Ratfolk." She replies simply to Barry. "A whole lot of them; it was like a swarm!"
Barry seems confused, "Ratfolk? What are ratfolk?"
Elsara, the medicine check reveals that nobody has caught anything from the bites. It seems that the bacteria is mainly the type that causes nasty infections. Luckily most of you resisted it.
Barry seems speechless. "There... is no account of such creatures. This is interesting... and disturbing."
Briggs said, "I think we should send an entire squad down here at a later date. These creatures are much like most other things we've seen here: things that have never been recorded in our bestiaries."
I'm ruling that a short rest while in a dungeon will take 15-30 minutes. The day will end only when you take a long rest. There is no normal food or water sources in dungeons so you'll have to use a day's worth of rations and 4 pints of water per person during long rest.
Luckily, there's no need to worry about either food or water for this mission because for some odd reason, Briggs bought along an absurd amount of food and water.
Briggs responds to Val, "I saw what the ratmen are capable of. I'm pretty sure 5 of us Dragon Knights and a few extra soldiers can handle it. Regardless, that will have to wait until we find the dragon fossil we're looking for."
"We should look in another direction then. And I hope it is not inside the room full of spiders I closed. There you will need more than five knights I guess "
Briggs scratches his head and says, "Don't underestimate the Dragon Knights of Drynia. We can handle a bunch of spiders no problem." He then goes quiet for a second and seems like he's thinking about something, "At least, I think we can handle spiders. Guess it could depend on the type of spider. I'm 100% sure that we can probably handle some giant spiders. Not sure about Emperor Spiders though; most likely we can't handle that. Then again, Emperor spiders don't stay in groups so I guess 5 of us should be enough. Then again... nothing has been natural here so maybe it's Five Emperor spiders? On an equally important note, should someone underestimate the Dragon Knights? On one hand we have been doing a pretty good job so far. On the other hand, we haven't faced anything too bad..." Briggs seems to have got caught in some kind of though train loop or something.

( Could Val identify the kind of spiders they were? Nature21 )
" The thing is, that you don't have Five Knights now, you have us. And it should suffice to locate your dragon fossile. " says Val before eating his food and remain silent.
Briggs seems to have snapped out of his loop. He answer abruptly, "Yeah, you're right. We should look elsewhere."
The spiders were Assassin Spiders. Val, check character sheet. Assassin Spider is temporarily added to the creature section because it seems to be the easiest way to share info about private homebrew creatures.
Elsara picks herself up, dusting off any bits of dirt she got from the prior encounter. "Yeah, I've seen a reeeeeeaaaaally big spider before. Best not to make them angry, so if we can not disturb them they should be fine."
"Those were assasin spiders. Apex predators and fierce fighters. " says Valwarin " You really want to let them alone. " he looks to Briggs. " I do not doubt the abilities of the Knights, but you will need more than five to eliminate them. I suggest you follow Elsara's advice..."
Briggs blinks a bit and mumbles, "Assassins Spiders you say. Now I'm not sure if we can handle that. 50%? That seems like a safe bet. Not exactly 50. Maybe 45? Should I bring 6 or all 7 of us? On one hand..." He seems to be starting to get caught up in another thought loop.
Runt takes a breather, she reconstitutes herself and says to the group, Thanks for the aid done there. I haven't faced numbers like that in some time. Glad to have each of you at my back.

Briggs contemplates holding off the monsters a bit longer but decides against it. He escapes, climbing the rope.
Ratman squeak something to each other.

"Part person, part rat." Elsara explains smiply, looking relieved no one is going to contract filth fever. "Pretty self-explanatory."

Val speaks softly
" We should rest yes. Their numbers were great. And that darkness worries me. Perhaps you will need more than squad downthere..."
