(First, I should have the opportunity to counterspell the Fireball.
Second; he cast it on himself, too? Does he seem to be damaged?)
Gendan does not like being framed.

(DM: Your math was wrong on my health. I had killed since the last long rest, so I had 47 MAX + 9 Temp = 56. Subtract 14 for the fireball (fire resistance from dragon plate) should be at 42.)
Yeah, I goofed. I forgot the Warlock's Temp HP reset on Long Rest and not short rest. Fixed.
The First Mate cast it on himself and took 8 damage. Evocation wizards can negate damage from their own spells so I think it would make sense for him to be able to reduce damage on himself instead of negating entirely.
Gendan was caught off guard from the First Mate's sudden attack (Failed Initial WIS) and was not able to dodge the fireball that exploded in her face (Failed DEX save). The main force of the attack was absorbed by the Dragon Plate. This armor of Drynian design is pretty useful. Her dark vigor allows her to shrug off even more of the damage. She stands and quickly feels her body start to freeze up as the first mate is casting Hold Person. (No need to Counter Spell since she passed the save). Gendan shakes off the spell with the force of her will.
Gendan's turn.
The party walks toward the gate of the base. Captain Cerax takes a position on the front lines and keeps an eye open for ambushes. The party passes through the gates and then suddenly... nothing happens. There is no ambush and there is no sign of pirates inside the fort. It really does seem abandoned. Inside the fort is a Ballista. It is unmanned. It seems that had the pirate captain not been subdued by Deva, she may have come here to recoup and man the war machines which are now sitting harmlessly. Inside the fort, there is one large gate leading to the interior.
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
(I understand that it’s hard to do Reactions in PBP, but I feel like Gendan could have Counterspelled the Fireball. If not, she would have used her reaction for the following)
Hellish Rebuke, dealing 19 fire damage, half on save (DC 15 DEX Save)
(Holding her turn until I know the results/rulings on her reaction.)
“How dare you try to frame me!” Gendan’s voice booms loud enough for the oncoming guards to hear. Her eyes have no pupils and no whites, they are just a black abyss. She charges the first mate with her maul. She places a Hex on him (disadvantage on CHA checks in case he tries to deceive his crew).
To hit: 14 for 11 magical bludgeoning and 4 necrotic. To maim, not kill. And with her back swing, 9 for 12 magical bludgeoning and 6 necrotic.
With a combination of magical defenses and swift movement, the First Mate dodges Gendan's swings. The guard's footsteps get closer and he says, "Stand down. Don't make me have to hurt you. Guards! Guards! Help!" and then he tries and fails to paralyze her again.
(Remember he has disadvantage on his CHA checks when convincing the guards that Gendan is the culprit.)
”Remember your captain’s orders! Watch the prisoners!” She continues to attempt to diffuse the situation with the guards.
Gendan continues to attempt to knock out the first mate. To hit: 21 for 16 magical bludgeoning and 3 necrotic. To maim, not kill. And with her back swing, 11 for 16 magical bludgeoning and 6 necrotic.
Elsara looks up at the large gate. "Guess there's one main path." She comments, headed that way. She glances around as she does, wondering if there are any other pirates that weren't called to arms, maybe some poorly ones that are in bed with a cold.
The last hit almost knocks the First Mate out. That's when the guards arrive. The First Mate tries to convince the guards over to his side. Because he is the first mate and because he is more beaten up than Gendan is, he would have advantage on the CHA check. But because of Hex, his advantage has been cancelled.
Gendan, roll persuasion Vs his persuasion: 12
Other Party,
The inside of the fort is pretty small. There are two sets of stairs on the east and on the west which both lead to the watch towers. Ahead to the north is another set of stairs which leads to the fort's interior. There are beds and rooms for the pirates. At the end there is a slightly bigger room which was probably used by the captain. The fort is empty.
Elsara enjoys snooping around the area, trying to memorise the layout and see if there's secret passages so she could sketch a map of it later and show to Mr. Sweetcane.
The guards seem to look at themselves and the first mate's face quickly falls as he realizes that the guards aren't buying what he's telling them. Gendan, What do you say to the guards? (It won't effect your success or failure but it might effect what the guards do. They probably won't take any hostile actions against you)
Elsara searches the place and ends up finding a note. The note says the following:
I am very pleased with the latest haul. For that we will be sending you a set of magical gear to better enhance your efficiency. I hope to receive equally good profits from you during the course of our partnership. If you continue to prove your worth, I will continue to send the goods to you and feed you information to avoid your capture.
The handwriting is very elegant and proper though it is not a handwriting that Elsara recognizes. The note also seems to have a seal on it though that seal does not belong to any organization that the party recognizes.
"Huh, so there is a mastermind behind it."Elsara says, taking the letter to the captain with them. "Oh Captain, I've found another clue!" She tells him. She skips over with the note and presents it to him."I'm not familiar with the handwriting or this here,"she points to the seal. "Maybe it's something you might recognise?"
He needed to be beaten into submission but he was at 1 HP so a quick hit to the head makes quick work of him. The guards stare for a few more seconds before running off back to their posts.
The captain looks at the letter and says, "So it would seem that the pirates did have a secret benefactor. I do not recognize the handwriting or the symbol but..." he points to that part of the letter which mentions feeding information and continues, "It looks to me that we may have a mole among our crew. We should probably head back now as soon as possible. If we can catch either the mole or the pirate captain, we will be able to get the identity of the benefactor."

Reactions: The WIS save was for counter spelling it. You can hellish rebuke though for 19 damage.

Does the first mate surrender, or does he need to be beaten into submission?
