Bianka also takes a handful of crossbow bolts (20) , her gaze fixed on the upper floor as the sorcerer's call reverberates through the staircase. "I recall the children speaking of their parents' failure to return after venturing into the basement," she murmurs. "They claimed to have heard the chilling howls of monsters as well. If there is something lurking on the first floor, I doubt those creatures are the parents." Bianka pauses, turning her eyes to her loyal familiar. "Kiri! Go forth and investigate, but be careful." The undead owl flaps its featherless wings and gracefully ascends to the floor above.
Your owl soars up the stairs to the next floor, and end up in another large hall. Unlit oil lamps are mounted on the walls, and there is a large fireplace at the far end. Hanging above the mantelpiece of the fire is a large wood-framed painting of a family: Two adults, a man holding a swaddled baby in his arms and a woman, who appears to look towards her husband with a curious look, perhaps a hint of scorn. In front of them stand two smiling children - whom you recognise as the two children you met outside.
There is a set of carved wooden doors in the north wall, and a similar set in the south wall. Each of these is flanked by antique suits of armor flank standing against the walls. The suits of Armor each have curious visored helm shaped like a wolf's head, and each hold a spear.
The red marble staircase that comes up from yh first floor below continues to spriral upwards to the third floor and then stops there. A cold draft of air seems to be coming down the steps from above.
Thromlin looks to Janek "It would perhaps be good to continue to clear the second floor? It would be a sad day if we left something behind and below to come bite us in the back? But I defer to the pack."
"I agree with Thromlim," Bianka says, her eyes scanning the dimly lit suitcase ahead. "I prefer caution over the surprise of a monster lurking in the shadows, ready to strike from behind. The night stretches before us, and time is on our side. We need not rush blindly into danger." She pauses, a silent conversation transpiring between her and her trusted familiar.
"My owl has detected no immediate threats on the floor above. It seems we can proceed without imminent peril."If no one objects, Bianka takes a step forward, her hand gripping the cold metal of a crossbow firmly. OOC: Sorry guys. I will be unable to respond for the next 24 hours or so, as I will be aboard an airplane.
You move up the stairs to the hall in the second floor. The fire and lamps are unlit, and there are no windows in the hall, leaving you in near-total darkness (unless you bring up a light, or light the lamps/fire)
In the darkness, the Duits of Armor that flank the two doors are looking ominous, and despite these being empty and lifeless, you cannot shake the feeling that you are not entirely alone in the house.
Thromlim walks up the stairs carrying the flame in his hands and inspects the suits of armor.
Investigation: 15
The flames throw long shadows across the room as you investigate the Suits of Armor. The helmets with their faceplates closed resemble wolf heads. The doors, flanked on either side by the suits, are decoratively carved. At first, you think that they depict young people dancing, but as you move closer and hold your flame to light the engravings, you realise that the figures in fact appear to be fighting off swarms of bats.
Between the implicit violence suits of armor and the sinister engravings, the room has quite a strange and somewhat disturbing theme. Certainly not what you would expect in a family home with young children.
Janek also continues up the stair, still holding his torch. Seeing a lamp, he will try and light it from his torch. "Shall we start taking a look?" He heads to one of the two doors, ready to open it if there is no objection.
Rising slowly from his chair, Alcazar looks around one more time. His gaze lingers briefly on the front door before he follows the troupe up the stairs.
He walks slowly and carefull up and takes in the armour at the top, wondering at the wealth of the owners -- not just a well-to-do merchant it would seem. When Janek asks about the door he glances further up the stairs, then nods.
"No enemy left behind, eh?" he says with a faint smile.
You are now all on the 2nd floor; with a set of double doors to the north and a door to the south. You recall that the girl mentioned a library on this floor, but it is not obvious which of the doors might lead to it.
(Having just updated the map, I just realised I forgot to describe one more door. Apologies)
Very close to where the stairs emerge on the 2nd floor hall you are in now, there is a narrow and unassuming door made to blend into the panelling (not trying to hide it, just not trying to draw attention to it, as it is likely not a feature meant for the use of the Master of the House). You suspect whatever is behind this door is more likely utilitarian and, from where the dumbwaiter was on the floor below, may well connect to the kitchen through this dumbwaiter.
Bianka tilts her head, surveying the grand hall before her. "The parents of these children possess a peculiar taste when it comes to adorning their house. However, it appears their incomes are insufficient to employ an adequate number of housekeepers." Or perhaps the servants have found refuge in hiding? Be it as it may, this place exudes an air of peculiarity for multiple reasons. Bianka assumes a lotus position, commanding her owl to perch upon one of the suits of armour, observing the surroundings. "While you venture forth to explore the chambers, I shall seek the magic that resides within this very floor." With those words spoken, the sorceress shuts her eyes and delves into her inner realm of mystical discovery.
Thromlin shakes his head with a ruefully as he watches the sorceress fold herself onto the floor. He follows Janek into the northern room and whispers to him.
"That one has lots to say, I am starting to think that perhaps she is worried that we don't think she is smart. Perhaps we should encourage her more."
As his tall lanky frame disappears from the landing into the room he turns over his shoulder and says enthusiastically, "Great job um, Bianka! I think, sorry lots of new people today. Your doing amazing, you are the best floor sitter we have!"
Alcazar watches the proceedings with a level of detachment, unsure what he could really add to the efforts his companions are making. As Rojer moves to the door, Alcazar follows a little behing, ready to help in any way he can, as the ghostly skeletal hand continues to follow him.

Opening the north door carefully, you find that before you lies the library which the children mentioned. Red velvet drapes cover the windows of this room. An exquisite mahogany desk and a matching high-back chair face the entrance and the fireplace, above which hangs a framed picture of a windmill perched atop a rocky crag. Situated in corners of the room are two overstuffed chairs. Floor-to-ceiling bookshelves line the south-east wall. A rolling wooden ladder allows one to more easily reach the high shelves. Another chest-height bookshelf stands in the middle of the room. The books on the bookshelves seem to be in a whole variety of rainbow covers. While most are brown or natural leather, these are interspersed with various books dyed in expensive colours ranging the whole spectrum of the rainbow.
As you enter the room you get the feeling that there's something slightly odd about one of the bookshelves. (Roll perception please)

The shout has a slight echo from the large space of the spiral staircase, but nothing happens. You hear and see nothing in response to your call.
