Splendor the Paladin walks into the Inn with a glowing radiance and aura. His polished armor is filled with white and painted porcelain, decorated with holy symbols and designs.
"Sir, we have rounded up all the Soldiers from the Caravan to interrogate. Is this man one more?"
Peyton gestures and looks you over with intense insight 13, "What say you, General? Do you sense something about this soldier?"
The Paladin opens his awareness to detect such things as evil and undead.
(Funnily enough... reborn aren't technically undead per the rules... maybe because they still have souls, I guess)
Akkron will try to be honest but vague in answering whatever questions the men have. Though he does have a backup plan in case things get ugly.
"Yes, I am indeed one of the soldiers from the caravan... the spellcaster, to be specific," he says. "My name is Mattic... Mattic Akkron."
The name comes to mind, and he thinks that it is his. Or at least that it was his. Though he isn't entirely sure. It was certainly the name his mother was yelling at him in that strange vision of the past he had a few nights ago.

Unhappy that the market got rid of individual purchases for one-off subclasses, magic items, and monsters?
Splendor the Paladin, uses Divine Sense but detected nothing out of the normal. His innate insight on the other hand detected 23.
Peyton says, "Let's take you to the other soldiers so that we can get this story straight."
They walk you outside, where a large crowd has gathered. Crossing the Town Center, you are taken to the Courthouse, where you find Thom the Wagon Master and the other seven Soldiers.
Soldier 2 says, "The Orcs were easy. Something divine happened, Mystra's hand came down and the next moment the Orcs were all dead. The new recruit couldn't do anything. He just stood there and screamed. He didn't even have a weapon drawn."
Thom spoke, "He did it. Cast a spell, is all I know. I read. I know what somatic means." He imitates the hand gesture for the Psychic Scream spell's somatic component.
Juno, the Defender Warlock, steps out from a dark corner, "Let me see that hand gesture again." And she uses her ability, Dark One's Own Luck, Arcana Check 26
Since Xanathar's guide to everything sets the difficulty at DC 15 +spell level, I'm going to roll a perception check for Thom and an arcana check for him to reproduce the gesture accruately.
Thom's Perception Check, to see the Somatic Gesture 5 Thom's Arcana Check, to perform the Gesture accurately 11
Juno can't make out the spell based on Thom's reproduction of the Somatic Component. However, she is very suspicious and will interrogate all of the Soldiers, repeatedly, for about an hour before letting up. During the interrogation, you can RP if you want.
Splendor did roll very high on the insight. Can you RP what that might have revealed?
Akkron sees Thom rather inexpertly attempting to reproduce the somatic components of Psychic Scream. It would be somewhat amusing if not for the situation at hand.
"Ah, so it seems that there are conflicting opinions of me at the moment..." Akkron says. "Interesting. If you don't mind me asking, what would it actually mean to you three if I did indeed cast a such a powerful spell to save the lives of my comrades in arms?"

Unhappy that the market got rid of individual purchases for one-off subclasses, magic items, and monsters?
Hmmm... I think that Akkron's behavior is a bit illusive; Akkron himself isn't entirely sure how he should feel or behave in this situation, and is starting to wonder if he should consider invoking Medieval Miranda rights. But to an insight roll of 23, it is quite clear that he's hiding something. Perhaps he even comes off as a bit smug, as if he knows how much more powerful he really is than the Paladin or Fighter...
Anyway, Akkron is going to play along until it's clear that they either don't want to let him go or that they've given up questioning him. Though he will ask a few questions of his own, especially to the Warlock.
"So... miss... Juno, was it? What is the source of your great arcane power? Are you a wizard like myself, or perhaps you made a pact with some otherworldly being...?"

This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
Juno looks in your direction with an expression of disgust and walks away.
Splendor the Paladin shouts, "No more with this interrogation. I've heard enough. I think all nine of you are hiding something but still you are all heroes for your duty. All of you must travel back to Diamond City, to be promoted as Inquisitors. You can help us with our investigation."
He leads you all to a large wooden boat with a paddle wheel. Some manner of manpower and magic keeps the wheel turning.
You're given travel packs and rations and you get to share a bunk with Soldier 2 (I'll give him a name, since he's sticking around).
Day 7 (Boat Day 1), random chance encounters 29 Day 8 (Boat Day 2), random chance encounters 20 Day 9 (Boat Day 3), random chance encounters 98
By the end of Day 9, you arrive at an enormous stone landing dock, as the castle comes in view, you have made it to Diamond City and the Castle Vesper.
Peyton leads you and the rest of your group to the Library where a wizard's apprentice finds you lodging once again. A page reminds you that dinner is in two hours, and you notice that your room and the others are guarded by two of the kings guards.
Do we each have our own rooms, or are these more like barracks?
You're bunking with Soldier 2, who's name is Reggie. He has an over inflated self worth, since he survived the Orc attack, and he won't let you forget it.
You are all gathered for dinner and sit at a long table beside other guards and soldiers. The far table has seats for all the Defenders, with three empty chairs. It seems they are still waiting for others to report back their findings.
Conversation is anxious and uneventful. Several soldiers are excited to see what happens next. After mealtime, the Defenders retire and the Solders are able to roam about the common spaces in the Library. An adept calls for "lights out", making his rounds at 10:00pm. Back in the bunk, Reggie talks of the promotion to inquisitor, as it's a fast career advancement for him and his family.
Day 8: Dawn
Breakfast is prepared and set in the feasthall from the night before. This time the Defender's table is full and the Rogue, Monk, and Sorcerer, who were missing last night have arrived.
The Arch Wizard Kane addresses the Inquisitors, at the end of the meal. Please report to your squad leaders, we have sending stones for each of you to report your findings daily. You all have marching orders and each of you have individual assignments.
When you report into your squad leader, he pairs you with Reggie to travel out to Kingdom's Rim, to Old Big Tree, and you are given supplies, a stipend of 30 gp, a horse and a mule each. The trip will take six days without additional stops except for simple campsites and will take 8 days if you stop short, on your journey, to sleep in towns.
Did we get any kind of intel on what's at Old Big Tree that we need to be investigating?
Your orders are to make contact with the Outpost Captain and collect as much day-to-day information as possible. Also, to report as much as possible each day en route, using a both sending stones. Once you deliver your report, stay at Old Big Tree and await new orders via sending stones.
There is a small matter giving XP to Reggie so that he can level up. Orogs at 450 XP times nine, and one Orc War Chielf at 1100 XP is a total of 5150 XP. Split amoung 9 party members is 572 XP for Reggie.
As soon as we're about a day or two out... that is to say, once we're no longer in easy screaming distance of the the Defenders, Akkron decides that it's time to start putting fear into certain people (read: an arrogant soldier who's convinced he's immortal). The wizard casts mind blank right before every long rest (which are only 4 hours long for a Reborn, leaving 20 hours of protection from all divination spells and being charmed, so he should be relatively safe from immediate detection when he does this).
"You know Reggie, I like you, you're a pretty okay guy," Akkron tells him when they are out in the wilderness, and have seen neither civilization nor passing travelers for quite a while. "But I do think that you should probably know exactly what happened that day which saved us from the orcs... I'm not just any common mage."
As soon as he gets Reggie's attention, he points to the largest boulder that he can see (that is to say, one that can be targeted with true polymorph and to transform it into a young amethyst dragon.
"My friend, I think it's time for you to know the truth... I am quite possibly the most powerful being on this planet, far more powerful than any of the Defenders... possibly all of them. And I think that I have been called to a greater purpose than any being who has ever before walked this world... now, I know this may be rather hard for you to believe without proof, so I want to show you a sign that what I say is the truth and I'm not just pulling your leg... look at that boulder over there. I am going to transform it into a dragon before your eyes... watch closely."

"You know, last time I checked I also survived the fight with the orcs," the wizard says. "Unless of course you think that I'm some kind of undead."
The thought crosses his mind of revealing his true form to Reggie, but they aren't that close quite yet. But he does find the man rather amusing.
