Enoch raised an eyebrow but simply nodded at Essendrum. He wasn't worried, per se, but he always preferred facing situations after stacking the odds in his favor. He'd not been harmed in their last encounter, but he was determined to do a better job of keeping his companions equally unharmed.
After double-checking to ensure he still had his holy water and healing potion, the paladin stepped aside to let the secret passage be opened.
Essendrum immediately returns to examining the bookshelves and the desk in the previous room, as well as all other places a wizard might hide a spellbook.
After some searching, Essendrum comes up a bit disappointed as he is unable to find a spellbook on the shelves. He does find an older copy of "The History of Thay", written in infernal and dating about 200 years ago. He finds 2 pieces of parchment sticking out from one of the books. After looking over them he can decipher some of the archaic symbols and mathematical equations to conclude that both are spells. The 1st he easily can decipher it as a wizard's spell Thunderwave The 2nd has religious language and symbolism he does not understand.
Poking around what remains of the burnt shelf Essendrum finds a hidden compartment that must have been opened up due to the fire. Inside he finds a purse of coins, containing 100 gold, a small vial of a blue-green liquid, and a pair of goggles.
It takes some time but Spike finally finds the trigger to move the shelf. It swings into a 10 ft. dark corridor that leads to a 15 ft. x 15 ft. round room. Moving to the room you see a 10 ft. round hole in the middle of the room with cables coming from the ceiling and going down into the darkness. Essendrum's torch goes out.
Essendrum puts the Thuderwave scroll in his belt pouch and gives the religious scroll to Bjorn. He will taste a drop of the potion to see if he can identify it. He’ll try on the goggles to see if they improve his vision. The purse he’ll give to Enoch for safe keeping.
When his torch goes out, he’ll try relighting it to see if the problem was a gust of wind.
Kiza peers into the darkened area adjusting her goggles of night which gives her Darkvision to see if there is any danger she may notice. Darkvision 60ft.
(I canceled the short rest because Bjorn’s healing was suppressed. But if nothing sucks our brains in the next few seconds I’m happy to do a short rest if you like. I can regain a third level spell slot if we do.)
Enoch blinked as he absently grabbed the purse and shook it, before shrugging and putting it away.
As the light was extinguished, he raised his shield and spun around toward the entrance they'd come through, guarding against any surprise attacks on the crew. "Essendrum? I do hope you can cast a bit of magic for us here."
Essendrum kindles his torch again (or swaps out a new one if it has just run down).
“The hallway has not sufficiently interfered with my studies to deserve a fireball at this point, so let me see what I can do with this torch. Flint or Kiza, do let us know if anything nasty sneaks up in the mean time?”
Both Spike and Kiza peek over the edge of the hole. They see the drop is about 30 ft. to a small platform to which the ropes from the ceiling are attached. Both of you can make a room identical to the one you are in with a rough stone opening along the west wall.
Essendrum is able to light a new torch, the old one having burnt out. He sees no evidence of a gust of wind suddenly putting out his torch but the torch did burn unusually fast for some reason.
Enoch raises his shield and spins. In the darkness, he can not make out any movement or shapes. Once Essendrum lights a new torch, Enoch looks back only to see the empty corridor the party had traveled down.
Kiza relays what she sees to everyone. "I guess we are heading down this hole. Any volunteers for going first? I am a bit skittish after that last fight." says Kiza.
"I can head down first," came the reply. "Provided someone can toss me a torch when I get down there. We probably shouldn't be in the dark down here any more than necessary."
The paladin sheathed his sword and swung his shield onto his back, then grabbed one of the ropes, testing it first to ensure it would support him.
"Well, here goes," he said uncomfortably as he climbed hand-over-hand down into the darkness.
Enoch climbs down. Athletics check if needed: 19
If he makes it down without incident, he'll call out to let everyone know he's at the bottom.
Essendrum will toss down his lit torch when Enoch is halfway through his climb. While he has another spare torch, he would prefer not to find himself trapped in the dark. He will also cut some fabric from the chairs or from the books if necessary, and wrap it around his used torch so he’ll have another back up. He also pockets the two books he found most interesting, the 200 year old book on Thay and the treatise on corpses. In the course of that he’ll get Spike to drag one of the chairs over to the edge of the hole and leave it there near the edge so that it is visible from below.
As Enoch repels down one of the cables, Essendrum drops a lit torch into the hole and then turns to accomplish another task. The torch falls 30 ft. and once it hits it lights up the room. Enoch makes it down with ease.
DM: I'll need an Athletics roll from everyone trying to get to the bottom using the cables. If you have any other means to get down, let me know.
Kiza feels a bit of her strength returning to her. The process is slow without a short rest but it will return in time.
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
Spike:
Nursing his brew while the others rest or research, Spike waits until he feels mostly recovered from the recent fights before getting up (long enough for a short rest).
After moving the bookcase and opening the secret door he cautions, “Let us proceed with caution,” and helps position chairs, tie ropes, lower people down, etc.
For himself, he finds something immovable to tie the rope around before climbing down himself—he is no lightweight.

Since nobody can proceed until the dwarf finishes his ale (short rest) and then moves the bookcase, Essendrum spends the time reading. After the ale is drunk, he uses Arcane Recovery to get back a 3rd level spell slot.
(I also noted above that Essendrum tasted the potion and tried on the goggles. What did he find out?)

Essendrum’s other task was before the repelling.
He is not athletic so he’ll ask Spike to tie a rope around him and lower him.
"I will need help as well. So, I will need to be lowered down as well as my strength was sapped though I am feeling a little better" says Kiza.
