As they arrive at the gate, Normont examines the forced lock. "If the gate was forced, Jasper and the others will have gone in to investigate for sure, rather than wait for the signal", he says, looking across into the apartment complex to see if he can see any sign of them. It is then that he spots the figures on the roof and the one that pitches off.
"Yes, I see. Be careful", he says to Dev, Lokilia and Nerak as he draws his pistol.
Initiative: 9+2=11
(OOC: I assumed a 14 perception was ok to read the spoiler text. If not I can amend the above)
Dev is focused on the open gate. He remembers the time Elia Woodbyre invited him to join her at the playground swings. He had opened the playground gate, entered, waited for her. She never came. Instead her brother and three older boys showed up to “teach him a lesson.”
He is lost in these thoughts when Lokilia warns of people on the roof dropping to the courtyard. Eyes widening in fear, the teen tiefling pulls himself into the present.
Magnus Initiative: Nat 20 (Now you roll this, Dice Gods, I hate you).
Magnus looks shocked as Theron tightens his grip on his shovel and utters his warning. Then hearing the loud banging of a door being closed and the scream, he whirls around in confusion trying to see where these "attackers" might be coming from.
Nerak jumps at the scream and scans the building, not noticing the figures on the roof until Lokilia points out the figure dropping to the courtyard "Seen". A series of small blue and purple arcane runes twirl around his hands as he prepares to possibly have a fight.
Jasper and Quinn turn around to see three battered corpses lying on the cobblestones, another thuds down beside them even as the first three begin to rise to their feet. ( 10' away from enemy)
Within the apartment Theron stares out the window in horror seeing the dead rise ( 30'), Magnus enters the room but is unable to see through the window just yet. ( 40' from enemy)
Across the courtyard at the gate some of those there can see two of their companions at a closed door facing three....now four...grasping dead things. ( 60' from enemy)
The runes around Nerak's hands spin faster and change color into an icy blue and fade away. A thin sheet of ice forms around the left most grasping form. After the cast Nerak is going to move 20ft forward putting himself 40ft away from the creatures. DC 13 Con save On fail: 2 cold damage on disadvantage on next attack roll.
Quinn does not miss a bit, he charges into the dead with his blade and the amulet his parents gave and swings for their head. But once he gets closer his nerves get the better of him, not being use to dealing with the undead he misses completely and quivers a little.
"Fascinating, but what in tarnation are those things?", Normont exclaims as he sees more and more of what appear to be dead folk drop from the roof only to rise up as if it hadn't happened. "Are these things a normal sight in Drynna?", he adds as he rushes forward, drawing his pistol and hastily loading it as he moves.
His little legs can't quite get him within optimum range, but he takes a speculative shot at the closest of the creatures, a satisfying boom echoing off the apartment walls.
Movement: 25ft towards the dead things Action: Attack closest adversary (with disadvantage due to range): (16, 18)+4=20, Damage: 7+2=9 [piercing]
(OOC: Ignore the third to hit roll in the campaign log, meant to roll for damage...d'oh!)
“There are stories about undead infesting Whitestone, but it all happened before my time there”, Normont replies to Nerak with a shrug as he blows the smoke from the barrel of his pistol.
Dev does not rush into action. Terrified, his feet freeze in place as firmly as if struck by Nerak’s ice magic, which suits him fine. He intends, in fact, to hide behind the gate. But when he sees the others charge forward, his adrenaline surges and his heartbeat thumps loudly in his ears. Then something unexpected happens.
The teenager, responding to some unseen source, like a mannequin, begins to move. ‘My magic pipes!,’ he thinks, as his pan pipes rise to his mouth, and he plays a single falling note like a distant keening at the moon. Now, his heartbeat drums loudly in everyone’s ears, transforming into a low - hi beat. And to this beat, his feet begin to move. ‘Oh no! My magic boots!,’ he thinks, as he spins in time to the rhythm, then steps forward purposefully toward the melee. His voice, that tantalizing, brightly edged instrument, now adds to the rhythm, and you hear the first of these words, which lend 1d6 of bardic inspiration to Normont.
It's close to midnight / And something evil's lurking in the dark / Under the moonlight / You see a sight that almost stops your heart / You try to scream / But terror takes the sound before you make it / You start to freeze / As horror looks you right between the eyes / You're paralyzed / 'Cause this is thriller, thriller night
Action: cast minor illusion: loud sound of amplified heartbeat/MJ beat
Magnus hurries to the window to join Theron and looks out to see what is attacking his friends. As he looks upon the creatures he racks his brain to see if he recognizes them from his studies, unfortunately the scene in front of him leaves him dumbfounded. At the same time a ball of green energy forms in his hand and streaks out to blast a hole in the ground near one of the creatures.
“That ain’t gonna scare them, if that’s what you were going for Magnus. They’re undead. Unnatural creatures, and somewhere there is a master that raised them. My path here is clear now.” Theron’s voice almost sounds disappointed, like he’d rather deal with an uppity merchant than his sacred duty.
