Lokilia had followed as well into the temple and down the spiral stair. This seemed like such a nice place, and in such a nice, forested setting. She was very tempted to say something but felt it better to keep quiet as Normont gave his excellent report.
Normont had simply nodded when asked to vouch for the others, but felt proud as Lokilia stood up for herself.
He follows in silence as they are led into the temple and down into the crypt, Amber perched on his shoulder.
"That is a shame", he says at the news the Grand Mistress is not in town. He is a little surprised that Ascera didn't cut straight to the chase to find out who they had information on, but on reflection getting the whole story from the start was probably the best way to proceed.
And so for the second time in two days, he recounts the story. At least this time it was verbally, with someone else doing the writing. And at least it was fresh in his mind from writing the report for the Pale Guard.
He starts with the purpose of their travel, the mission of their now deceased friend and member of the Cobalt Soul, Magnus. He then skips to the relevant details of the corrupted animals and their investigation into the source of the black ichor. Of the attack by the mutated creature, and how he spotted the shred of Grey Hunter uniform on it and how they released it from its torment. Even the final words of the creature.
At this point, he not only takes the damaged rifle from his back and places it on the desk, but also retrieves the amber cameo of the young man out of his bag. He places that down with the initials M. K. facing Ascera.
"We found these things near him, and further into the cave there was a metal and stone obelisk. It turned out to be a frame of basalt holding an adamantine ring some 6' in diameter. Within the ring was a scintillating blue field that occasionally sputtered letting a small amount of black liquid spill out from the base and drip out. When that happened we could see through the ring into a vast chamber composed of raw bleeding flesh, and a great form, some three stories high, lay against a bone and sinew altar with a black metal barbed spike some 50' long transfixing it in place. The form was still and its tendrils and too many limbs were slumped against the floor of the chamber, a floor composed of teeth and cartilage....from it a black liquid slowly seeped and pooled upon the floor, trickling through the portal whenever it sputtered open for a fraction of a second".
"If I may have a blank sheet of paper?", he says, and if provided he takes out his tinker's tools and uses his magical tinkering to create a picture of the image they saw. "It won't last long, but gives you an idea. Have someone copy it if you like, I can maintain it for a few days".
He watches Ascera as he speaks and shows the picture, wondering if this is normal for Grey Hunters.
"We managed to fix the portal to stop it opening, but the corruption was already vast, and impacting nearby wildlife and tribal communities. It also ran in small amounts into the river, which could be problematic".
He then digs into his pack and withdraws the parchment on which he wrote the location of the Far Gate Portal.
"And we also brought samples", he says, retrieving those from his bag next and placing them down.
"And that concludes the report. So, do you know the Grey Hunter?".
Ascera listens as she writes, as Normonts tale goes on her grip on the quill tightens and her face becomes grave and drawn.
" By the Dawnfather.......", she gasped as she handed him the paper.
She stares at the proffered samples but makes no move to touch them and, instead, shuffles back a little.
She looked around at the rest of the Grey Hunters who all looked saddened and deeply disturbed, " Yes. we know him. Beren....beren Gotebbe. The locket is his husband Mikael Kyber."
" He didn't return from his patrol of the Sierras.....how long......how long had he been what he became? Do you think?"
" Thankyou....thankyou all for delivering a dear friend from....that....."
She looked around at the other Hunters.
" Peta. Take one of the priests from the Zenith and go and relay the news and the locket to Mikael. Don't........don't tell him what happened....just that we have confirmation that Beren is dead and his body was not recoverable."
She looked down at the rifle then at the others, " I will make a full report to The Grand Mistress....", she met Normonts eyes with a searching look. ".......she may be inclined to consider this deed your Hunt."
" If your so inclined?"
" I'm sorry for the loss of your friend, you should certainly make a report of such to the Cobalt Soul representative."
Dev follows Normont and Lokilia into the old temple and listens as the gnome recounts events with envious clarity and completeness. The tiefling glows with pride! So there!, he thinks, watching the woman’s—Ascera’s — reaction, I bet you didn’t expect to hear the best report, ever, this morning!
Ascera looked up quizzically at Dev as if trying and failing to interpret his expression.....
Quinn will follow in the back of his group, making sure nothing bad happens. While Normont recants our recent adventures, Quinn will be amazed so much has happened in such a short period of time.
Lokilia had followed as well into the temple and down the spiral stair. This seemed like such a nice place, and in such a nice, forested setting. She was very tempted to say something but felt it better to keep quiet as Normont gave his excellent report.
And finally her gaze rested upon Lokilia, again with that slight crooked half-smile......

When he hears the horrified tone in Ascera's response and her glance searches his for meaning, his eyes fall. Somehow, the disastrous content of Normont's report had been too much for the teenager to think about again. He had chosen to ignore the message and focus on the means. He takes a deep breath, facing the demons of the past. When his glance lifts to Ascera's again, his expression is sympathetic. She had lost a friend. And when she gives instructions to save the dead huntsman's loved one from more anguish than is necessary, Dev's sympathy is warmed by respect.
Normont watches as the Grey Hunters take in the story and explain who it was that they found.
"I am afraid it is impossible to tell how long they were like that. The mutations were extensive and advanced, so some time. There was evidence of research though, so I expect it started slowly, and then overtook him quickly. The nature of the black goo is such that you are not aware of the compulsion, so he must have been particularly strong willed to fight through it enough to retain some sense of self at the end. My condolences to you all, and especially to the widower", he replies to Ascera.
When she offers thanks, he simply nods in understanding.
"I would certainly be open to considering this my hunt. Although with the Mistress out of town, I suppose that might take some time to hear?", he says to Ascera before turning to Lokilia to hopefully explain. "I believe Ascera here is suggesting what we did could be considered like a job interview for me".
He looks back to Ascera with raised eyebrow to make sure he interpreted that correctly.
He then moves on, "Visiting the Cobalt Soul person is on our list for today. Another thing on the list is to visit Glinnick's Second Hand Store. It seems a criminal element from out of town might have moved in. I don't suppose you have any information that might be of use? We have nothing concrete yet, but I believe you track this sort of thing".
He looks to Dev, hoping he didn't mind him asking, in case he had anything to add.
Dev is not at first sure why Normont is looking at him. But it quickly dawns on him that his friend sees the situation that unfolded this morning as belonging to him, to Dev, in some sense, and the tiefling is grateful for the space to voice his thoughts. But he is in agreement with Normont and simply nods. That seems like enough information to ask the Gray Hunt at least for now.
When Normont mentions 'job interview', Lokilia tries not to frown as she nods slowly. She is very intersted what this woman might have to say about the Second Hand Store. She would really like to get these other things taken care of us they could follow up on that.

Ascera nods, " Of course, the offer will remain open until you have concluded any other business....but will need to be reassessed if a year or more has passed without answer.", she smiled, though her eyes were still sad..
" Well, it seems you have a busy day. ""
" Yes, The Nameless Ones.....we caught one of their operatives a month or so ago.....but they've hooked up with Glinnink you say? New information. Thankyou."
" And of course, we'll not be revealing anything that was seen of our numbers, location etc. here today to anyone else? Correct?", her gaze was on Normont but it was obvious she spoke to all four.
" I just hate moving.......the packing alone makes me cranky and don't even start on the unpacking..."
" And The Grand Mistress would be.....displeased."
“Nameless Ones?,” Dev’s eerie voice fills the silence. “Can you tell me — us— more about them?” He summarizes their encounter and continues, “I… think I have to try to discourage this… person…, Glinnink, from what he’s doing…”
Lokilia too looks worried about this 'Nameless Ones' organization. She agrees with Dev, wanting to know more.
As for Ascera's admonition about disclosing anything, she quickly speaks. "I am honored you trusted me in coming here. I will of course not betray that." She gives her a smile. "Plus, I quite like the location too. So I'd hate to see you have to move."
"Joining the rifles was my dream ever since I was a boy, until I knew about you hunters. I love Whitestone, but there is a wide world out there that needs protecting just as much, probably more. So there is no chance of me not accepting if the Grand Mistress offers me the chance", Normont replies seriously. "And no chance I will be giving away secrets. In fact, we have been very careful not to speak about the Grey Hunters in public".
He listens carefully to the talk of Nameless Ones, concerned that this sounded far more organised than he had suspected.
She looks towards Dev, " A relatively new group, remnants of the Clasp and Myriad that decided to go their own way......not as organized as either and somewhat less predictable because of it.....but somewhat dangerous."
" They will attempt to remove anyone they think is interfering, before- you mentioned Glinnick we thought our capture of their agent had meant they were preparing to move on....but now..."
" We will not prevent you from investigating further but we need more information on their wider connections beyond Whitestone before we move on them."
She grinned widely at Lokilia and Lokilia saw the Dwarven man roll his eyes and mutter something to the orc woman beside him.
Ascera nodded to Normont, " Understood. Before you depart for your other tasks do you need supplies? Information? Arcane assistance?"
Normont listens to the information about the Nameless Ones, having heard of the Clasp and Myriad. Whatever they did here, was far more dangerous than he had thought.
"I don't think we are in need of supplies whilst in the city, but perhaps when we leave there might be something. We need to know where we are going first I suppose, and if I am given leave to leave", he replies, looking to the others. "We have had some run ins with the Cerberus Assembly, if you have information about that organisation that might help", he says with a knowing smile. They didn't want for powerful enemies it seemed, what with the Cerbeus Assembly and maybe going after the Nameless Ones. "As for arcane assistance, I am not entirely sure what you mean?", he adds.
( Very near. There will be some 'downtime' after your various errands during which Level Up will occur. I don't foresee any combat before your Level Up.)
"I think we're good on supplies for the most part," Lokilia says, agreeing with Normont. "I'm not sure we know where we're going next though. Or even who will be going."

Ascera actively goggled at Normont, " Sorry? You what? Had some........run ins........with the Cerberus Assembly......."
" And your breathing."
" Normont, um.......how the hell are you four still alive? You described some of what you've been through and I gather from some significant shared glances that there were other things preceeding your most recent encounters."
" And now you casually drop in that you have come up against one of the most powerful organisations in the world that spawned the likes of Delilah Briarwood and others."
She looked truly flummoxed.
" Uh, right. Organisation of incredibly powerful Archmages......from Wildmount, heavily involved in the Dwendalion Empire......incredibly dangerous. Do they know who you are?"
" Oh, uh, I meant in terms of identifying magical items or perhaps some minor enchantments, potions etc."
Lokilia looked a bit shocked as Ascera describes the Cerberus Assembly. "I guess archmages makes sense the way they teleported in and out of that place." She shakes her head, "I still think those things in the tower were more dangerous than those Cerberus folks though."
Normont's eyes widen a bit as Ascera looks so shocked they survived encounters with the Cerberus Assembly. He had been aware that Delila Briarwood had once been among their ranks, but a whole organisation of arch mages, he had not considered that
"The things in the tower were terrifying, but the mages from the Assembly seemed to not have much problem with them", he replies thoughtfully.
"I was going to suggest we haven't been explicitly targeted by the Cerberus Assembly yet, we just seem to run into them on other business. "Between fog shrouded ruins with a terrible creature lurking within, a far gate portal leaking corruption, an ancient tower full of crazed abyssal creatures and a young drake trying to make a name for itself, the southern part of the Alabaster Sierra's is quite the dangerous place!".
"But no, I don't think we need anything identifying. I am quite capable in that regard given a little time to calibrate my tools".
