The man looks to have been traveling east when he got attacked by the wolves. The cause of death would probably be that his throat was ripped out by claws or jaws, you aren't sure which, as well as the numerous bite and claw marks around his back. He was definitely running to the east when he was attacked.
Reggie looks around the area and doesn't find anything out of the ordinary except the dead man.
The letter has a large B set into the wax seal, holding the letter closed.
After looking over the body and the tracks surrounding it, Tilo says, "Definitely the wolves that got him. He was heading east. Whether to deliver that leader or just flee from the wolves, I don't know. What does it say?"
Andrei takes a crossbow bolt from his pack and slides it under the seal with a practiced motion, then carefully opens the envelope, pointing it away from his face.
Assuming nothing happens, Andrei takes out the letter and begins to read it.
Hail thee of might and valor. I, the Burgomaster of Barovia, send you honor – with despair. My adopted daughter, the fair Ireena Kolyana, has been these past nights bitten by a vampyr. For over four hundred years, this creature has drained the life blood of my people. Now, my dear Ireena languishes and dies from an unholy wound caused by this vile beast. He has become too powerful to conquer. So I say to you, give us up for dead and encircle this land with the symbols of good. Let holy men call upon their power that the devil may be contained within the walls of weeping Barovia. Leave our sorrows to our graves, and save the world from this evil fate of ours. There is much wealth entrapped in this community. Return for your reward after we are all departed for a better life.
Andrei takes a few minutes to read the letter, but all of a sudden he hands it back to Reggie, muttering a long string of Abyssal which Tilo recognizes as various swearwords.
"He's, uh, 'Burgomaster of Barovia,' Kolyan Indirovich, or, more likely, carrying it for him,"says Andrei.
"Kolyan's daughter got bitten by a powerful vampire that is in Barovia."
Tilo shrugged, "Never heard of it. Think he was running for help? If so, that mean there's a town with a vampire somewhere in that direction," he says pointing down the path to the west, "wolves behind us and maybe someplace safe to the east. What's the call?" Tilo unsheathes his second, mundane, shortsword as he speaks, looking back and forth between the east and west paths, trusting one of the others to watch the rear.
Reggie receives the proffered letter from Andrei, takes a perfunctory look at it, then stuffs it unceremoniously into his pack. "This sounds right up your alley," the fighter says, raising his eyebrows at Andrei. "Shouldn't we check it out?" He glances at Artus making plans of protection with the minotaur through eye contact: Get ready for an attack. Reggie adjusts his grip on his swords again, bouncing slightly on his heels.
"The vampire is "too powerful to conquer" for all the people here. Vampires are much worse than most necromancers. But we do need to get moving. We may as well try that way."
The fog spills out of the forest to swallow up the road behind you. Ahead, jutting from the impenetrable woods on both sides of the road, are high stone buttresses looming gray in the fog. Huge iron gates hang on the stonework. Dew clings with cold tenacity to the rusted bars. Two headless statues of armed guardians flank the gate, their heads now lying among the weeds at their feet. They greet you only with silence.
In the distance, another wolf howl joins the single wolf's howl. It seems to be getting closer to you and it's coming from the forest to the North of you.
"Better the threat you know than the unknown, in my opinion," says Reggie. "But if we can find shelter behind that gate ... Maybe that is better than facing wolves."

As you stand in the roadway trying to decide what to do you hear the howl of a lone wolf not too far away coming from the North West somewhere.

Artus shutters at the sound of the wolf.

Tilo ranges ahead again, heading down the eastern path.

Artus starts to wander closer to Andrei as he stares in amazement of the statues.
"That is quite a sight. And it's eerily quiet and.. and.. whats the word... serene!" Artus exclaims, a little too excited over remembering the word.
The second howl snaps him back to reality and he huffs again.

"Inside or out with the wolves?" Andrei mutters, looking around for any signs of life as he starts to walk closer to the gate.

You don't notice any signs of life around you at this moment except your party members of course.

(After the note was read aloud)
Lando holds his open hand out, "Reggie, might I hold on to that letter? I would like to study it later, and add some details to my notes"

"I for one would rather not end up like that poor old chum back there. I say we enter!"
