Relieved that the strange dress with it's bony wings was swiftly disposed of, Malvyn summons a magical assistant to help the others look around for the things they are here to retrieve, also creating some magical light to hopefully make their search easier.
Guardok inspects the doll with bright pink hair, just like described. He also remembered their research brought up that the doll voiced some rude phrases. In order to be sure it is the right one, he tries to make it speak.
He hopes it doesn't talk too loudly.
Curiosity will also get the better of him, considering the circus is all about curiosities. He wants to take a look around to see if there is anything interested even if the doll turns out to be the right one.
It takes a moment, but Guardok eventually seems to recall that squeezing the doll's hand is supposed to activate it. He squeezes and the doll speaks in a very sassy tone. "Really? In those robes?"
It seems a bit loud, at least, here in the quiet attic of the manor it does. You aren't sure how far the sound might have carried.
After you had picked up the pink-haired doll there is one wearing a suit and sporting a large white mustache. He is holding a small, doll sized purse. A handful of other dies sit roughly in a row along the shelf. None seem to particularly stand out to you.
There is also the riding toy that looks like a roc which you aren't really sure about. And as you step over towards it you see what looks like a dusty old ball that has rolled into one corner.
Guardok giggles at the sassiness even as he winces at the volume.
When he sees the doll with the purse, he picks that up to have a look. Wondering what a doll would keep in such a purse, he takes a look.
If no-one else has looked at the rocking roc or dust ball, he will eventually get to those too, until Mae and Mal call over they are done and need to get going.
"Is that the book? If so I think we should take it and leave before more things up here animate." Malvyn says as he realizes Guardok indeed has found the sassy doll.
Mae gets to the shelf if she can and begins looking through the books there for the one she's after and will take it and start heading out as soon as she can.
Guardok takes a look at the roc. It seems like a person could sit on it. Likely the spring would let them rock back and forth to pretend they were riding. There is nothing to indicate any magic, and that's the best he can guess without investigating further. The dust ball actually seems to be made of glass when he touches it. It has just been covered, over what has probably been many years. It seems rather light.
Maestarts to look through the titles of the books on the shelf: Mithrendain Laws and Politics Animals and Herbs of the Otterterre Expanse Castle of the Gods Memories of my Dreams Darlings and Strangers
The first two have sturdy covers which are rather plain beyond the titles. Castle of the Gods has a picturesque castle on the cover nestled high in the mountains. It is much more brightly colored, though has a much flimsier look to it. The next seems nicely bound and a more ornately lettered title. While no picture, the cover does have an ornate looping filigree design. The final book cover depicts several young men and women of various races in some sort of social gathering.
Having looked them over, Malvynthe points out the rather large leather-bound book sitting on a stand next to the shelf. Maedoes not see any title or decoration on the outside of this closed book. But it seems to match the description of what you are looking for. Maetakes it and finds it seems rather heavy.
"Oh for star's sake,"Mae grumbled for a moment as she picks up the tome, finding it heavier than anticipated. "I think is it though. Let's go before someone catches us, or more dresses decide to come to life."She'll head back to the door to go down the stairs to leave.
Guardok thinks twice about having a go on the roc, after the dress came to life, but does take a closer at the glass ball. Cleaning the dust off to get a better look.
Investigation: 8+2=10
(OOC: How big is the ball? Is it small enough to easily take with? What about the purse he looked in?)
"Be careful Guardok, I think we have what we came for right? Let's head back to the dorms before we need to fight any other items stored here." Malvyn says, seeming anxious to leave before they get into deeper trouble than they already are for destroying property of the manor.
The ball is roughly 3 inches in diameter, easily held in one hand. Given your cursory look there is not much you can tell. The glass looks in good condition if it were cleaned up. It does not seem to be simply a solid piece of glass as it is slightly opaque when you look at it. The purse is perhaps a couple inches per side, wider than it is tall. It is more or less proportionally sized to a large doll. Both can very easily be picked up and taken with you.
Maeand the others head down the stairs, finding the hallway below just as quiet as it was before. Evidently neither the fight with the dress or the sassy doll triggered any alert.
Guardok looks at the ball and quite quickly decides to take it. It obviously hadn't been needed for quite some judging by the amount of dust, and so wouldn't be missed. It also seemed like it might make a rather nice prop.
With the purse, he decides to keep it with Sally Sassy Jane as a little accessory for her.
"Ok, I am coming", he whispers to Mae and Mal and follows them out. "Back the way we came?", he asks, ready to lead the way back.
"Yes, same way, another diversion for the clockwork butler perhaps, and then, just to be safe, don't go near that mysterious stola on the way out." The purple-skinned tiefling whispers back, seeming relieved that the worst part was probably over now.
(If needed, Malvyn would use Thaumaturgy to create more whispers from the dining room to keep the autmaton donwstairs occupied while they sneak out the back again.)
Yes, Mae will follow Mal out the way they came, either in between Mal and Guardok or at the back of them. Her heart is pounding already from the experience, so she rubs her fingers on the book as she carries it out, trying to stay as calm as possible.
Guardok heads off with the glass ball, the doll, and the doll purse. As you pick up the purse you feel that it seems to have coins in it.
Malvynheads over into the Drawing Room to get close enough to project his Prestidigitation into the dining room to distract the mechanical butler. It seems to work, and the group proceeds along the hallway, again pressing close to the wall to stay clear of the long fur stole hanging from the statues there. Soon they head out the same door that they came in and out onto the patio.
With no sign of alarm, you head around to the front of the manor, following the path back out towards where you had left Larine. She spots you coming, seeming pleased to see you all. Once you are close, she whispers to Mae. "Well? How did it go?"
Larine is more than ready to go and accompanies you along the path back to the main campus, and ultimately back towards Dresar Hall.
(OOC - Feel free to add to the RP, but you are essentially clear of the manor at this point!)
(Also, you all advance to Level 3!!! At long last!)
Malvyn would follow along back to Dresar hall, asking Mae politely if he could possibly borrow the book they retreived until morning. If so, he would spend a considerable part of the night eagerly pouring through it's pages to see what he could glean. During his sleep he would be visited by weird and unpleasant dreams, finding himself clutching his old dark tome as he awakens in the early hours. Although he is fairly certain he is indeed awake he can still hear the ominous whispers, seeming to emanate from the dark tome. Something had changed, but the purple-skinned tiefling wasn't sure this change was for the better.
Mae hurried out and breathed a deep sigh of relief as they met up with Larine, instinctively giving her a hug before stepping back and nodding. "We did it, we found the book. Let's go though now, before anyone spots us out here, and I will tell you about it when we're back."When they get back to the dorms she thinks a moment, then shakes her head a little. "It-it's not that I don't trust you Mal, but I want to get this to the professor as soon as I can. But maybe I can see if he'd be willing to let you come read it sometime, okay?" She smiled apologetically and then thanked Mal and Guardok again for their help, turning back to her room, inviting Larine if she wanted to stay up and hear how the night went. By the next morning though, Mae pushed herself to get up early and beeline for the professor's office to return the book.
Guardok is buzzing when they leave the manor, having loved the thrill of breaking in. He does feel a little guilty, but decides that no-one got hurt beyond some plants and what they took would not be missed.
"Does anyone else feel a bit of a buzz?", he asks as they head back to the halls. "A bit of swordplay, some sneaking about. Who knew it would be so much fun!", he adds.
When Mae thanks him and Mal, he gives her a smile. "No worries at all. Happy to be involved the next time you are asked to do something similar", he says, not quite getting how stressed it had made Mae feel in the moment.
Once everyone has dispersed, he will go to his room. If he is alone, he will take out the glass ball and clean it up. He will also check the purse, which is the bit he is most guilty about. Especially if it is coins.
Malvyn frowns at Mae's response, not quite seeing the logic in not letting him read the book now since she apparently wasn't about turn it over to her professor until next morning anyway. Deprived of the one thing he would personally get out of this particular evening of helping Mae out with her predicament he simply turns in for the night without another word.
Larine smiles at Maeafter she had hugged her. "Great job!" While not directly involved in the heist, Larine seems to share a bit of the excitement that Guardok has. Back at Dresar Hall, she is definitely interested in hearing about what happened, so joins Mae in her room. They quickly realize though that Chara is there asleep, so that is probably not a great place to talk. The green-haired girl pulls Mae over to the lounge. "Nobody's likely to be about at this hour. Just give me a quick version for now and then we'll get to bed."
A bit disappointed that Maehadn't allowed him to read the book she'd taken from the manor, Malvynheads off to his room for a short, and somewhat restless, sleep.
Guardok slips off to his room as the others disperse. Pierois not there, so he quickly cleans off the glass ball with his magic. It looks in very good condition, made of thick glass. Inside there seems like there might be some sort of nebulous substance, shifting ever so slowly within. It seems that it may be magical. Giving the purse a look, you see that there are 3 platinum coins inside.
After the genasi has noted the coins, he hears the door to his room. Pieroslips inside. "Ah, you're still awake?" he says, acting a little bit surprised.
