"I don't think we're blaming her for anything Larine, but her attitude here have certainly not been helpful. While I fully agree she probably acts this way because she cares for you, this had all been much simpler if she hadn't kept interfering." Malvyn says, shooting Mae a glare. "Anyway, thank you again for what you've been able to share. I would prefer it if you say nothing about us knowing anything to your contacts, not yet at least." He finishes with a polite smile.
"INTERFERING!?"Mae whirled around. "I'M THE ONE THAT STARTED THIS STUPID CONVERSATION! AND THEN GET BLAMED FOR THINGS AND TOLD I'M THE PROBLEM!? I'M SORRY GUARDOK FOR TRYING TO OFFER SOMETHING I THOUGHT YOU MIGHT LIKE! THERE! HAPPY!? AND IF I WAS SUCH A PROBLEM INTERFERING, ALL YOU HAD TO DO WAS JUST TELL ME TO LEAVE SO YOU COULD INTERROGATE LARINE FURTHER! SO FINE! I'LL SHUT UP!" She storms back to her room and goes inside, without Larine.
"Whoa!", Guardok exclaims in response to Mae screaming at them.
He looks to Mal and Larine for a moment, before finally speaking.
"Look Larine, I meant what I said, I won't be turning anyone in. Mal is right, best not to mention us looking into this group. People died when we found that mask like yours. Things might not be as bad here right now, but they are perhaps capable of much worse. It is fairly worrying in truth. I know Mae thinks getting you to tell us all about this would make us happy. But let's not forget we were lied to and threatened, and had a door slammed in our face. I don't blame either of you for the situation, but I think you both handled it really badly. Personally, leading with an apology would have gone down better", he says with a shrug.
"But I am glad she convinced you to own up, and that you were brave enough to stick around and answer all Mal's questions. I'm sure Mal will come up with up with a plan, and it sounds like it will have to be before the Rose Stage Festival", he says on a positive note.
Larine spins around, staring at the door that Maehas slammed closed. Without her. When she looks back at Guardok and Malvynshe appears like she's about to cry and seems rather upset. "Maybe I'm not sorry," she says a bit petulantly. "I should probably just go."
She heads for the Levitation Disk, and if nobody stops her, she heads down.
A few moments later, Mae emerges from her room, most of her things hastily shoved into a large bag, instruments affixed to her. She hurries to the lift as well and heads down after Larine.
Malvyn just gives Guardok a resigned look as first Larine leaves with her petulant comment, and then Mae hurries by after her. It seemed they could simply agree to disagree about what would ahve been proer conduct here."Well, that could have gone better." He says to the genasi with a calm smile. "At least we have some new information to work with. I will look into things and get back to you once I have made any significant progress. You could perhaps too check around, clearly being the more social of the two of us." He continues with an appreciative smile to Guardok.
Unless there is more to discuss, Malvyn would spend some time talking to in particular Mina, Aurora and Drazhmir about the current administration and any shortcomings it has. Without sharing what Larine has told him he would also ask them about any groups or factions that would oppose the current administration
Everyone goes their own ways and the night passes. And in fact, the next week proceeds as the Exam looms ahead on Friday. Most activities continue, though have a bit of a lull to allow students to prepare. With a bit more free time, the following weeks promise a greater amount of activity for all the extracurriculars. (OOC - As always, if there was something you want to add to the RP that was going on, please do. And then post if there is anything your character might want to do during the week. I will also resolve any conversation between Mae and Larine separately.)
Malvyndoes have time to speak to various people he knows:
Drazhomir - His opinion is that everything is fine at Strixhaven, though he's a bit curious about the reason for your questions. "The Biblioplex is the apex in the assemblage of textual knowledge and scholarly learning. Not only in abundance of content but also in magnificence of organizational system. I dare say more information is archived and accessible here than any place in the multiverse!"
Aurora - She does say she's heard small grumblings now and then from a very small number of people. It seems to her sour grapes about knowing someone who wasn't accepted to Strixhaven. And maybe a few who feel their restrictions on 'forbidden' magic are a bit excessive. "It is said the restricted sections of the Biblioplex contain many aspects of the arcane that are not spoken of openly on campus."
Mina - She is probably the person most intrigued by your question. "There are rumors of a group that philosophically opposes Strixhaven. But sadly, there is essentially no information that I've come across here. It could just be because it is just a rumor or such an inconsequential group." She goes on a bit more. "There are those in Arcavios that grumble about the restrictive admissions to Strixhaven. But I think it's hard to get in because it is such a great place to learn." Thinking a bit more she adds, "I did read something about controversy around when Jadzi was appointed Oracle of Strixhaven by the Founder Dragons. There were a few that were disappointed in the choice. Hmm... and there's always grumblings about how much power the Founder Dragons have over Strixhaven, and really all of Arcavios. Though again, I've not heard anyone point to any real issues with what they do. Those dragons really stay out of most things."
(OOC - I'm assuming these are Malvyn's friends, so they chat with you openly. If you feel like there's something you want an Insight check on what they've said you're welcome to make one. Tell me who and what specific information you are hoping to glean for the roll. You can also ask follow-up questions if you wish. They've answered most of what they know but a probing question might give you more.)
The day after he speaks to Drazhomir, Malvynnotices a small folded up note amongst his things when he is leaving the Biblioplex after working. Unfolding it, he sees the following written in a neatly flowing handwritting: 'Thank you so for your excellent work getting all the books shelved this afternoon. Your hard work is greatly appreciated. - Professor Flintwind'
It seems strange, as you mainly worked the reference desk the last couple days, and had not done anything for Professor Flintwind. You're thinking perhaps she had meant the message for someone else when the script shifts. The writing is much in much more precise, blocky lettering: 'Malvyn: Please come see me in my office on the Lorehold campus tomorrow after your last class. Bring friends. - Professor Arvol Flintwind'
You recognize this must be an Illusory Script spell, with the first text what everyone else sees and the later text intended only for you.
Guardok watches Larine disappear down the levitation disk followed by Mae not too far behind.
"You got that right, but I wasn't comfortable being treated like that", he replies a little despondently. "But yes, we have more information, but this is far worse than student pranks. The group behind this has at least one Professor and it managed to get our evidence to disappear which means someone in the labs as well. And now Professor Hopandskip has us in his sights. Be careful who you speak to Mal. After Larine, you just never know", he advises.
"I will be involved with the Rose Stage Festival as part of the Drama Club, so will keep an eye on things there in case someone tries something".
Other than prepare for exams, Guardok looks to be involved with the Rose Stage Festival, both to keep an eye out for sabotage and pranks and also because he is part of the Drama club and fancies doing something anyway. Ideally roping in Rubina and Quentillius, who he tries to recruit as lookouts as well. He doesn't mention big group opposition to Strixhaven, he just comes from the angle that this is a big event and if someone were planning another prank, it would be during it.
Rubina is more than willing to help Guardok with looking out for mischief. Quentillius is more dismissive at first, but as he sees that you two are somewhat serious about it, he helps out as well. You spend a good deal of time at the Rose Stage getting things prepared. There are various backdrops, costumes, and props that have to be assembled and organized. Not all have been completed thus far, but those that have you have looked at and have yet to see anything suspicious.
Map:
R1 - Seating Area R2 - Orchestra Pit R3 - Main Stage R4 - Backstage Doors R5 - Rose Room - normally areas for dressing and preparing to come on stage; it is currently empty except for items you've just brought in for the festival R6 - Storage Hallway - empty passage to the storage areas R7 - Stage Storage Areas - many random supplies for the stage with most marked “Property of the Playactors Drama Guild” though some things are unmarked
(OOC - You have not gone through the 'backstage' area. At least not yet.)
Mae returns to her room eventually, with her things, but shuts herself in except for going to class and tutoring, even bringing food back to her room to eat for now.
(OOC: there is nothing Mae wants to do before exams)
The next opportunity Guardok gets to speak to Mal, he will update him on the news from the Rose Stage. He won't be secretive, likely speaking in the lounge area.
"Nothing suspicious so far. I haven't looked backstage yet, but the main area is pretty empty. Just the stuff the Drame Guild brought in. There are some storage rooms though. If you fancy joining me, I will be taking a look next time I am there", he offers.
"Thanks but I'm sure you have that covered Guardok."The purple-skinned tiefling says with a reassuring smile to his genasi friend. "Also, since we should expect a similar prank as before it will be difficult to prepare against I'm afraid as it would likely only take the prankster a moment to apply that oily substance to something that will later animate and attack. I think we should be present and prepared at the festival though as that would be the likely time for the next prank. Until then we can do some more research. I've asked around a bit but have not yet made any real progress I'm afraid."
"I've been asked to meet with a professor Arvol Flintwind tomorrow after my last class. I would like you to come as well." Guardok can then hear in his head.
"Fair enough, Mal", Guardok replies regarding the search of the stage storage. He nods at Mal's suggestions for staying on guard as well, and that finding anything ahead of time was not the most useful. "I guess so, but if I know what and who is meant to be there, then it will be easier to spot something, or even someone, out of place", he says with a smile.
"Sure, we are in Magical Physiologies together anyway. Do you know what it is about?", he thinks, unaware that it doesn't reach Mal. Once he figures that out, he will whisper it.
He will endeavour to search backstage himself, unless Rubina and Quentillius are around.
Later that evening, Guardok is with Rubina and Quentillius in the Rose Room of the backstage area. There's still plenty of time before the Rose Festival, so beyond a few tools and building materials, this space is empty. But plans are in place and once exams are over work will pick up in earnest.
You all feel confident the rest of the place has been looked at, which just leaves the 2 storage areas. The group of you head first to the west and then to the east.
(Guardok - need a Perception check for each room. I'll say with Advantage given the help. Plus I'll give them a roll as well.)
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
"Better look for any of that oily substance. I realize I have no idea what sets the transformation off though, I can cancel with Aurora and come with you. In the off chance something already is in place and will set off while you are there I would feel deeply ashamed if I wasn't there to help you." Malvyn says and is ready to come along after all.
"But no, I have no idea what the meeting is about, but I'd venture to guess that it is somehow linked to some incidents in the past and these current pranks." Malvyn messages in response.
(If okay Malvyn would come along, whispering advice to assist Guardok, Guidance West: 4 East: 3 )
A late addition to the group, Malvyn jobs the others to check out the store rooms. First in the west room, Guardok notes and unmarked box containing 3 vials. There is a moment of excitement until the group confirms that these are potions of healing.
"Ah yes," Quentillius pipes up. "I do recall someone saying these were out here in case someone got hurt on stage."
Nothing else intetesting or suspicious is found, so the group proceeds to the eastern room. Again, Guardok thinks he sees something beneath an unmarked box. Quentillius and Rubina move the box and you see a bag. Guardok and Malvyn check it out and see it is larger inside. It's a bag of holding.
There is only a book inside the bag. It seems like a textbook and says 'Silverquill Primer' on the front.
Nothing else of note seems to be here. As you wrap up, Rubina says, "There's nothing here now. But it would be so easy for someone to get in here and leave a box. Or just slip something in one of these other boxes already in hereSure, they'd have to get past the lock. But I'm guessing that wouldn't be hard for some."
(OOC - Not to halt the investigation above and any RP. But I wanted to start in on the next while I'm at home tonight just because it's easier to access my notes. We can continue along with both I hope!)
The next day after Magical Physiologies class, Malvynand Guardokmake their way to the Lorehold campus. As you pass the building of the main campus, you enter a wide flat plain. The tree-lined avenue continues across this barren space approaching a large building in the distance. Rugged mesas and steep hills rise from the plain and a short distance from the main campus there is a bridge over a wide crevasse. You note several small star arches dotted all over the landscape. Once past the crevasse, there is a scattering of buildings, random columns, and a bit further on a stone arch straddling the path. After you pass under it there is another bridge over a much broader and deeper chasm. The bridge is lined with several monuments depicting historic figures, past professors and students, as well as war heroes and ancient heads of state. Within the chasm are a series of buildings excavated out from the cliffs. Precarious looking bridges cross from place to place, and there even seems to be some new constructions amongst the older ones.
After you cross the bridge, it is just a short distance to a large circular courtyard with an immensely tall tower in the center. The path continues a bit past to Kollema Hall, your destination. You step through the double doors into a huge room. Oval in shape it is about 240 ft. wide and 180 ft. across to the other side. In the middle is a statue of what seems to be a monk holding an open book in one hand and a staff in the other. There is a slightly raised walkway running from the door about 50 ft. to a spot in front of the large statue. A couple shallow steps allow you to step down to either side of this walkway.
Behind the statue, roughly a quarter of the room is elevated like a stage. On the far side from the entryway is a broad stair leading up to the balcony you can see surrounding the room. Beneath that balcony are rows upon rows of bookcases, with cogwork archivist, like in the Biblioplex, constantly flitting about retrieving and returning books. Small round table fill the floor space of the level you are on. The balcony seems to have several larger tables. Quite a few of them are filled with students who are reading, talking, studying.
Your destination is on the third floor. Once you go up the stairs to the balcony you see another broad stair leads up to the third floor. Looking about, you see signs pointing you towards the offices. A directory indicates the room number and it doesn't take too long for you to find the door of a small office space. You catch a glimpse of a slightly built human man with short cut black hair wearing a long red coat over an off-white shirt, the colors of Lorehold. He seems to be sitting at a desk reading something.
Malvyn would be relieved to find none of the oily substance, nor anything else suspicious backstage, but he would stay vigilant, anything could still happen, and most likely would at the festival.
It is with a certain degree of reverence that the purple-skinned tiefling for the first time visits the prestigious Lorehold campus, the college he planned to seek acceptance to for the rest of his time at Strixhaven.
"Excuse us, we are looking for Professor Flintwind, Professor Arvol Flintwind that is, we have an appointment." He asks the man sitting by the desk after giving the open door a gentle knock.
Guardok nods to Rubina, agreeing that it wouldn't take a lot to get in here at some point later.
"True, but I feel better that we checked. What do you think about this bag? It was just left under one of these boxes", he asks, checking to see if there was any sign of a label denoting who owned it. Emptying it out, he finds the book and passes it to Mal. "And this as well, likely forgotten".
Guardok follows Mal, looking around and feeling very out of place in the Lorehold campus. He can imagine Mal totally geeking out about it all though.
"This looks like your sort of place, Mal", he says idly as he looks at all the bookcases.
He can't help but wonder what the Professor wants with him, so out of place does he feel.
"INTERFERING!?" Mae whirled around.
