Mae saw the mean looking chest suddenly attack the student and hold on, her anger suddenly flared at the creature and she pulled out her drum, beating a few specific beats, golden magic swirling for a brief moment before turning into fire and whooshing toward the mimic! "You let them go right now!"
(Nat 20! 14 points of fire damage! Rolled in the log)
Knapmanages to send his enchanted stone in a direct line to the Mimic. Maealso sends the mote of fire hurtling into the creature. It is squarely hit, and immediately appears to follow the girl's command. The pseudopod quickly retracts, along with all the teeth. The foe now sits there looking just like an ordinary, and unmoving, chest.
The human student falls to the ground, clearly in a panic and unnerved by the blows he took.
Mei's eyes grow wide as the chest attacks the student, tears streaming down her cheeks as its teeth sink into his leg. Frozen in shock, the cards faintly thrum at her side in comfort, though their energy is largely depleted from her frivolous use of spells. She bites down hard on her lower lip, shaking herself from the stupor as the others all simultaneously attack and the chest is rendered inert.
Then she runs for the boy as he collapses, her first steps a stumble of slippers. "[Heal]!" she croaks in Sylvan, the restorative word more like a sobbed plea. Arcane wisteria flowers bloom around the student's wound before dissipating. "You're okay, you're okay, you're okay," she chants as she lowers to his side, her voice catching with emotion. "W-We've got you. I'm sorry. I'm so sorry."

The purple-skinned tiefling's fiery red eyes watches with amazement how his seemingly peaceful floories quickly dispatches the aberration, but as he sees the wounded student fall he hurries over to kneel by his side, calling upon his eldritch powers to heal. "Just stay like that, you are safe now."

Malvyn, seeing the purple-haired girl across from the traumatized student, even more in distress now, feels something he might one day recognize to be compassion. "I know you can see things Mei, things the rest of us can't, and I...ehm...I noticed the sketch in your sketchbook as you dropped it earlier." He says quietly, seeming quite awkward over admitting what he happaned to see, but then seeming more determined again. "If there is a connection you could still not have possibly prevented what happpened here Mei, please don't blame yourself for this in any way." He continues, something almost pleading in those fiery red eyes now.
Mei looks up from the student, his head now cradled in her lap, and surprise is written across her tear-sodden features. She opens her mouth to speak then closes it again, looking like a fish out of water. "Thank you," she finally whispers, amethyst eyes glistening, "I-I'll try. I'll try not to." Her swollen lower lip quivers as she nods her head, mustering the shadow of a small, grateful smile.
Chara eyes the now-inert chest nervously for a few moments before lightly landing on the ground next to Mei and the injured student.
"How are you feeling?" she asks the young man. "I can help as well if you're still hurt... just... hold still a moment."
Chara lays a hand on him lightly and releases divine healing energy into him.
Healing Light: 2 HP restored
(Edited because I just realized Chara actually already used up her spell slot during the fight; also, since Healing Light is a Bonus Action, she'll take the Help action to aid Malvyn on his Persuasion check to soothe the young man).
The fight is over before Guardok manages to even draw his dagger, a fact he is in equal measures disappointed and relieved about.
"Wow, you all know your stuff when it comes to defending yourselves", he says to the others who had taken care of the chest creature in short order.
Whilst the others are checking on the injured human, he wanders over to the now inert chest, and prods it with his dagger just to make sure it is no longer dangerous.
Mae sees the others quickly tend to the injured student, so she joins Guardok in looking at the erstwhile mimic and ensure it is, in fact, just a trunk now. "I wonder why someone let a mimic into the hall here. Was this supposed to be part of the scavenger hunt?" She muses out loud while taking a closer look at the trunk.
Meisuccessfully tends to the injured boy, her spell helping a little. Malvynadds his own healing spell which helps a bit more. His words, along with some help from Charaas she lands alongside, seems to have him calmed. And Charagives yet a bit more relief to his wounds. As he is tended to, you can see that he is wearing a first-year uniform. He has black wavy hair and brown eyes. And his rounded face makes him look rather young. Now a bit calmer, he speaks in a quiet voice. "Thank you, I do feel a bit better."
Guardokmeanwhile moves over to the chest. It is still not moving, something that continues even after he pokes it with his dagger. Looking at it now, it truly seems to just be an ordinary wooden chest. Perhaps a slight bit scuffed and worn, but the other chests strewn about the place look about in the same condition. Mae is able to help confirm that it is indeed a trunk.
A moment later you notice an Owlin woman dressed in the robes of a Silverquill professor, hurrying over towards you. "Students, well done!” she exclaims, ruffling her feathers with pride. “Such bravery in this incoming class! And what a bizarre occurrence. I can’t remember any of those old costume trunks ever bearing a hint of magic—let alone that manner of transmutation. I will be having a word with the equipment managers over at the Rose Stage. They’re supposed to keep this sort of thing from happening!” She pauses a moment to look at all of you, seeing the injured boy. "Are you alright?" she asks. As she does, she comes over to where Meiis tending to him. She pulls a healing potion from the bag at her side. "Here, drink this," she tells him.
Hoping he had given Mei some comfort, giving the kind purple-haired girl a smile and an encouraging nod for her caring for the young student in her lap, the purple-skinned tiefling's attention is then inevitably drawn to the mysterious trunk. He knew more than most about aberrations but he had never in his texts encountered anything quite like this. While pondering what he had seen he takes a closer look at the chest to find some explanation for it to suddenly have a toothy maw but then revert to being just a plain chest.
Guardok stands up a little straighter as the Owlin Silverquill professor praises their group, feeling a sense of shared pride at what his dorm mates had done. Of course he is still much shorter than everyone around him so they may not notice.
"I guess it wasn't a part of the scavenger hunt then", he responds to Mae as he sheathes his dagger, seeing that the creature is no longer active. "You were mighty impressive Mae, that was some firebolt. Got it right in the maw!", he mimes the firebolt with one hand smashing into his other hand, making an explosion sound. "Let's go see who the student is".
He wanders over to join the gathering throng around the human student.
"That was bad luck", he says. "What is your name? Were you on the scavenger hunt too? Where is your team?", he asks, rattling off the questions as they enter his mind.
Malvyndoesn't find anything of interest in looking at the chest. He does however recall that usually shapechangers revert to their natural form when killed. If the Mimicis dead it should be in its amorphous form. At least he thinks it would be.
Mei smiles and nods back, grateful for the offered comfort. She watches Malvyn as he walks away and does her best to take his words to heart, steeling herself against the tears that continually threaten to fall. In any case, there will be time for guilt later. And there’s a professor here now, things will be okay. It’ll all be okay.
With gentle encouragement she helps the student up to sitting so he can drink the potion. “Easy up, there you go.” Then she looks up at the Owlin. “Professor—um… Ma’am, I don’t think it was the equipment managers’ fault. Could—“ she glances at where her floormates are investigating the trunk then briefly scrunches her eyes closed. A strange darkness… “Could it have been… tampered with? Or enchanted with, um, ma—malevolent intent?”
Knap, still letting out a low growling purr, steps cautiously closer to the chest-come-mimic-come-trunk. He sees Mei significantly dishevelled butbefore he could ask What Sketch? He notices the Silverquill professor approach. Still convinced that this was some kind of test he attempts to discern whether or not the owlin is exhibiting genuine surprise at the event that just occurred.
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
Chara sighs with relief, wiping a bit of sweat off her forehead as the owlin gives the student a potion, then she glances towards the chest and Malvyn.
"Uhhh... are you sure that it's safe to get that close to it?" Chara asks nervously. "Here... I have a safer way to test if it's really dead or not..."
Chara uses sacred flame on the chest. If the horrific monster is really dead, then the spell will do nothing whatsoever to the now-inert chest... if it is playing dead, it's going to have to make a DC 14 Dex save or take 6 radiant damage.

The purple-skinned tiefling frowns after finding no explanation to what had just occured, but he makes a mental note to delve deeper into this tonight in the study room where he could consult his own tomes on the subject of aberrations, his hand briefly going to his shoulder bag to make sure they were still with him. As Chara uses her magic to blast the trunk with a radiant flame he gives the winged tiefling girl a smile and a nod before taking a step back to watch for any reaction to the magic.
Guardokcomes over and speaks with the injured student. "My name is Hedix. Uh, Serwin. Hedix Serwin." He seems a little bit out of sorts still. "I... my group... well, I mean... we ran. Or we all tried to run. I kinda tripped." He stops, looking embarrassed.
Knapconsiders the Owlin's reaction and decides that he really has no idea what she's thinking. Perhaps it's her bird-like nature that's throwing him off. Chara'sspell does nothing at all to the chest.
As Meihelps the student sit up and then fumbles a bit in her words, the Owlin professor introduces herself. "I am Professor Sharpbeak, Silverquill Professor of Radiance." She administers the potion to the boy and he suddenly looks vastly better. "I think this was just an unfortunate incident—but sadly, not an unheard-of one, since strange monsters often find their way onto campus. I doubt it was any sort of malevolent act. I'm sure it’s nothing to worry about. We were fortunate that you all reacted so quickly though."
"No shame in tripping, Hedix. Not sure I would say the same about leaving you to be mauled though", Guardok says looking around for any other first year students that are watching on, wondering who left him like that.
"Anyway, I'm Guardok", he says pretty much looking at Hedix at eye level now they have sat up.
Realising Mei had suggested it was possibly a malevolent act that caused the chest to come alive, and hearing Professor Sharpbeak suggest strange monsters regularly find their way onto campus, he frowns. "I had thought I wouldn't need weapons here, but perhaps I should wear my rapier in future. Do you really think someone did this on purpose Mei?", he asks Mei as he points back to the chest that the others are experimenting with.
