Mei pats Hedix Serwin's back as the potion is administered to him. "Yes. You were v-very b-brave, Hedix," she says in support of Guardok's words, voice catching again. "And have quite the story to tell now."
The young diviner seems to withdraw inward for a long moment before Professor Sharpbeak's words sink in. "Nothing to... worry about?" Her plum-colored brows knit together. She had heard stories from her father about mascots running wild and the dangers of Sedgemoor's swamp, but... why had she Dreamed of it then?
She glances from Guardok to the chest. "I... I don't know, I--" Yes, you do. The Dreaming does not lie. She shifts uncomfortably, then nods, her next words forcefully pulled from her tongue. "I had a Dream. It felt... sinister. Like a... a darkness had come." Her eyes flit between the professor and Guardok, the worry that they won't believe her weighing heavily upon her features.
Watching as Chara's magic does nothing to the chest and hearing Professor Sharpbeak's reassurance that this would have been something not too uncommon in Strixhaven both relieves and troubles the purple-skinned tiefling. The mention of strange monsters finding their way onto campus would not make his sleep any easier. "Thank you Professor, I'm sure we all just did what you should expect of your students, taking care of each other."He says, finally leaving the mysterious trunk, his gaze moving over all his floor mates with something that could be a proud expression. Malvyn was in fact still astonished how quickly the Chara, Knap and Mae had put down the toothy beast. If there were more strange monsters turning up, however unlikely, he would be safe in their midst. He then turns his attention back to Mei. He had a strong feeling her sketch and fears of this not being something random was to be taken seriously, so he listens to Mei's response while offering to help her and the young student up.
As Mei mentions her dream, Malvyn looks both intrigued and worried. Sinister darkness had followed him like a close friend but it clearly troubled the purple-haired girl. He wanted to hear all about this darkness, but this was not the time or the place for the questions he would want to ask. "I don't doubt there might be some truth to what you have dreamt Mei..." Malvyn says with what is probably meant as an reassuring smile. "...but if sinister darkness is coming you can clearly see your floor mates will deal with it, without even breaking sweat." He adds with a wink, hoping his attempt at a jest wasn't too awkward.
This was all a bit overwhelming for Mellori. She'd reacted instinctively and fortunately she'd missed the fellow first-year and hit the chest - but it could have gone terribly wrong. She mused if her actions were brave and decisive, or rash and foolhardy? As was her way, she would reflect upon this before coming to a decision.
All's well that ends well was a well-worn trope, but it seemed to fit right now.
Now that the fellow student was in good care, Mellori made her way to the chest. It was in her nature to be inquisitive and seek the truth, so she took a great deal of notice of the chest, its surroundings and also recalled what she knew of such magic.
“Monster shmonster. Nothing to worry about at all with us around, ay, Professor Sharpbeak?” Knap begins shadowboxing imaginary monsters in a way that forgets he might be in the company of someone very important. “Ahem, I meant, ahh, my name is Knap Shaka’Grasspear, 1st year, 4th floor Dresar hall. Should we escort Hedix to his dorm, healing place, infirmary or whatever it’s called here?”
Knap turns to Hedix, “You doin ok, friend? Need assistance somewhere?”
Hedix nods at Guardok's comment. "I suppose... though tripping is not all that great either." He still seems a bit embarrassed by it. "And I can't be too hard on the others. The library staff and professors were all trying to clear everyone out. They just followed what they were told."
When Guardok looks around, he did not really spot any other students, first year or otherwise. A few professors seem to be coming back in to the Biblioplex though.
To Knap, Hedix says, "Yea, I think I'm good. Now." He then glances to Mei, still very close and patting his back. "Oh and your help was so beautiful. No, not beautiful! I mean... you are... it was... umm... just thanks." His whole face blushes bright red. He tries to scramble to his feet. "I really do feel better. Umm, perhaps I should try and find my group."
Professor Sharpbeak interjects. "Mister Serwin, you may certainly go if you are well. I'll follow up with you tomorrow to see how you are doing, just to be sure."
The Owlin then turns to Mei. "I understand events like this can seem overwhelming. And if you have some sort of dreaming divination ability, that can be a difficult thing to truly understand. I hardly think this little mishap indicates any sort of darkness has come. Give it a few days and you'll have better perspective."
While the others chat, Mellori gave the chest a very thorough examination. You see the trunk’s wood and leather has been rubbed with a black, oily substance. You have no idea what it might be - it certainly doesn't match any magical components you can think of.
Thinking further on the issue, Mellori does put together first that the spell Chara cast did nothing - which suggests the chest is not a creature. Then Malvyn reasoned a shapeshifter would revert to its true form (OOC - assuming here he shared what he learned) - meaning this is not likely a shapeshifter. Thus, if it is just a chest, it must have been Transmutation magic at work.
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
The purple-skinned tiefling can't help but frown slightly as the Professor dismisses Mei's fears. He wasn't about to say anything about it, for now, anything that could possible reassure the purple-haired girl seemed good, but he was not about to let this go just because some Professor suggested as much.
Assuming Mellori would share what she discovered, Malvyn would join her by the trunk again, trying to take a closer look at the black oily substance.
Investigation: 17 Arcana: 15
After carefully examining the black oily substance he takes a small knife from his shoulder bag and tries to scrape of a tiny specimen.
When finished up with the examination Malvyn stands and turns to Guardok and the others. "I believe Lesviel said we would meet her back at Dresar Hall but I think Mellori has an application to leave at the information desk and then I suppose we could have a look around for your mysterious room mate."
Mei's eyes go owlishly wide as Hedrix blushes and scrambles away to find his group, color rising on her own cheeks apart from the puffy redness caused by her tears. She takes Malvyn's offered hand as she gets to her slippered feet and then gives it a grateful squeeze, his faith in her stronger than her own at the moment.
Perhaps Professor Sharpbeak is right.. this far from the Dryad and her village, the gift of Dreaming could be dulled. Maybe is was just... a ripple on the surface and not the portent she'd felt it as. She nods at the Owlin with a quiet, "Yes, ma'am," then is set adrift in her own thoughts as she stares down at the smeared red pool from Hedrix's wound.
Malvynis able to get a tiny sample of this oily substance Mellori found. He really can't glean any new information looking at it and can't recall anything similar.
Professor Sharpbeak comes over, glancing at the chest herself. "Quite a harrowing happening," she says. "You are all unharmed?"
As she's speaking a gnome wearing a first-year uniform comes hurrying over. The red-haired girl was the one you saw setting up earlier. "Look at this! Just look at all the damage! That is hours and hours of setup, all down the drain. What are we going to do? Yeesh! What in the world happened!"
"It was one of the chests, come to life," the Owlin says. "How did you get in here? I thought the student were all evacuated."
The Gnome shrugs. "They're here, aren't they?" She waves towards all of you residents of Dresar Hall's 4th floor. She looks over to you all. "Rosie." She then returns her attention to Professor Sharpbeak. "Anyhow, someone's got to survey the damage and start the cleanup."
Chara, finally satisfied that the chest won't try to eat anyone again.
"I... I think my hallmates and I are okay, Professor," she says, taking one lasf nervous glance at the chest. "Thank you for checking..."
She sighs and (after carefully checking to make sure it won't turn into a monster by dropping a sacred flame on it) takes a seat on one of the nearby chests and runs her fingers through her silver hair several times slowly to soothe herself. Even though she isn't injured, Chara feels drained... and she suspects she'll see that evil chest in her dreams tonight.

Unhappy that the market got rid of individual purchases for one-off subclasses, magic items, and monsters?
Guardok nods in agreement with Chara, "All good here. Didn't even get a chance to help in truth".
When Rosie comes over he is happy to see someone who matches his own stature, but is a little intrigued by her demeanour.
"It's good to meet you Rosie. I don't suppose you saw anyone suspicious hanging around, what with it being so busy with orientation?", he asks, keeping an eye on how she responds. She hadn't really answered the Professor when asked why she was still here.
Mellori ponders on what she learned from the chest and then shares with the rest of the floor-mates what she gleaned - specifically the black, oily substance (which does not appear at all magical from her memory), the deduction that the chest was not a creature, it is not a shapeshifter. Which, she finally deduced, meant it was the subject of Transmutation magic. Namely, this was a deliberate act by someone.
Mei perks up. ‘…start the cleanup.’ That’s something she can do. A way to help when she’d been none during the fight—just a deer in dancing lights. She begins to flit about, picking up what she can and prestidigitating anything that needs it. Arms full by the time she passes the chest Chara is sat atop, Mei does a double take at the Tiefling, recognizing those worried ticks as similar to her own.
She shuffles over and places a hand on Chara’s shoulder, careful of her wings. “You were amazing, you know. Like a deva sent from the Seven Heavens,” she says, admiration plain on her face. “I wish I had instincts like yours.” It’s unconsciously that she attaches magical encouragement to her words, a soothing Guidance channeled through the touch at her shoulder. She smiles warmly at her floormate then wobbles as the ruined costumes in her arms threaten to fall, snatching her hand away to catch them. With one last sheepish smile, Mei continues on her with the cleanup, driven by the desire to be of use.
Having secured the tiny sample of black oily substance, the purple-skinned tiefling turns to the perceptive read-haired girl beside him. "You have sharp eyes Mellori, I completely missed what you found. I think you are quite right too, this was a deliberate act of someone. Maybe we can work together trying to figure out what this black oily substance is, and if we can find out more about it we can maybe also find out who made it and perhaps also used it on the trunk to turn it into that...mawed thing." He says quietly, not wanting to draw the attention of the Professor.
Mellori smiles at Malvyn. "I'm good at researching through books," she waves a hand over her shoulder, "and I think we're in the right place to find out. Not that this black stuff seems magical. But I could be wrong of course. Maybe it is a clue. You know, whoever did this left the black stuff inadvertently and it will lead us to a person or a place. I mean, who uses grease as a rule? One out of the earshot of anyone else - as we don't know who we can trust, we should talk as a group on how we might go about solving this mystery."
Malvyn smiles back at Mellori and nods. "Yes, maybe when we're back in our lounge at Dresar Hall we can discuss this with the others. And personally I'm planning to spend much time in the Biblioplex anyway, and finding out if the black oily substance you found had anything to do with the trunk getting a maw like that is an investigative work I could really invest myself in."
Professor Sharpbeak focuses a moment on Rosie. "But I'm not sure you were supposed to be in here."
Rosie just shrugs in response. "Hey, I told them at the door someone had to check on the clean up. And I'm responsible for all this." As she sees Mei carrying a bunch of costumes she shifts attention from the professor to the girl. "Whoa now! You're not tearing any of that stuff are you? You know how long it took to put those together?" She nimbly steps over the scattered debris to inspect what Mei is doing. When she looks, she seems satisfied. "Never mind. You got it. Thanks for jumping in! You interested in the Live-Action Roleplaying Guild? Be great to have you."
Guardok had been watching the gnome. It seemed she was just genuinely concerned about getting everything back in order. While it had seemed like she perhsps didn't hear his question, after talking to Mei, she turns to the genasi. "No, didn't see a thing! Had my head inside one of them backgrounds I was putting together. Sudden like, all the students were pushing their way out and I got swept out with them!" She gives Guardok a wink. "Only for a moment though."
As Mellori and Malvyn converse, it doesn't seem anyone overhears them. However, Professor Sharpbeak does again addresses all of you. "Now, I want you to have this as a token of appreciation for what you've done." She reaches into her bag and pulls out some platinum pieces, giving one to each of you. "You have my heartfelt thanks. And I hope you all have a successful year here at Strixhaven."
The Biblioplex is filling a bit more, though with professors, staff, and perhaps a few older students. The Owlin says, "I do need to see about getting our Orientation going again. Please excuse me. I how to see you again under happier circumstances. And do come find me if you need to chat about all this." And with that she hurries off.
"A-Am I?" Mei squeaks as Rosie approaches, suddenly worried she is tearing them. "It's beautiful craftsmanship. It's for... live role-action... playing?" she asks after the gnome, a bit too late. She adds the torn costumes to a pile of things that need mending, with another pile designated for things that seem unsalvageable.
As Professor Sharpbeak addresses the group and then offers a very generous reward, Mei hesitates to accept it. Not wanting to seem rude, she does eventually take it with a gracious bow. She stares at the platinum piece, the coin heavy in her palm--though it has nothing to do with the weight.
It's your fault.
As they're left to their own devices once more, Mei curls her fingers around the coin and looks at the group. "Is everyone okay?" She knows none of them were injured, but is also aware that some wounds are unseen. "We could... go back to the fourth floor? Or maybe go somewhere to.. decompress?"
Mae took the platinum piece with only a very soft thank you, but a genuine one, putting into her bag somewhere before her hand brushed against the plush item she found earlier, giving it a small squeeze as she watched the rest of her floormates investigate and, admittedly bumble about a bit. She found it endearing though, knowing she was perfectly capable of making a buffoon of herself as she had done earlier. Still, she was glad the spat was over against the trunk and ready to go take her mind off of things somewhere else.
Knap flips the coin through his fingers and into the pouch where he keeps his pond stones. Proud as punch, at this rate I won't need to get a job,he tells himself.
Responding to Mei he says "Yeah, I'm doin fine. I hope our absent floor-mate hasn't found themselves in similar trouble though."
