Chadwick would be more comfortable with the horses either in the the tower (tight and smelly I know) or right behind the tower to help obscure them from the road. At 50gp each they represent a fair bit of coin.
Erbert, are these books we found with the Spider a collection of his spells to study, or do they contain anything else?
We were told that the Spider has been raiding this area and causing problems for the last two years. What was he trying to research here? Was he trying to locate this Furnace weapon with divination rituals?

Erbert examines the books. "That is very difficult to say, Trolkarl. Could be books of anything. Opening could be a problem; protections and wards and such," he scratches his head. "Let's have Hoid open it and see what happens." He lets out a Tee Hee with this....
The horses are retrieved and brought to the promontory. They are secured with their leads on the tip of the promontory, "behind" the tower. The door is closed and you all settle down for a long rest. Sunrise comes and you are all greeted by a bright sunny day after much desired sleep following the all-nighter you just pulled. You are all refreshed ((apply long rest)) and ready to proceed.
We previously used detect magic on the books and found nothing, correct? If so, Hoid will go a safe distance away outside the tower and open them. If we haven’t, Hoid will request magic detection first with a force “tee-hee” at Erbert.
The first book appears to be a spell book. In addition, there are notes and entries of more mundane writing. All of this is written in the style of the note you found to Craddock in the sewers. You assume the book belonged to the Black Spider.
The second book appears much older.
This large tome is constructed of 150 sheets of vellum bound with silk thread. The cover is constructed of two plates of ironwood bound in purple dyed griffon hide. The hide is heavily tooled with intricate designs inspired by nature and oak leaves.
The book is filled with text and diagrams written in elvish script. It appears to be gibberish that is written on all of the pages save for the last page written upon. This is about 3/4 of the way through the tome. On this page is written:
“It could be a code,” Erbert replies. “Many wizards do that.” He then puts the books side by side. "Look at the writing, though. It is different," Erbert points out. "These are written in different languages, but, you can see that the writing is....'different'. The same person did not write these books." He looks around. "This one that is nonsense is much older than this one that has spells written in it. This newer book is the Black Spider's spell book and note book. This other one," he pauses to think, "is something else altogether."
Pouch – 4 Bloodstone 50g, 2 Red Garnets 100g
Are these values per gem or value for the groups?

Gems/Jewelry/Art always listed as a per piece price
Someone please cast detect magic on the items collected from the Spider, including money and pouches.
Nothing radiates magic
What was the haul when Kragen got moldy?
2 Zircon 100g
2 Spinel 100g

Chadwick volunteers to hold on to the gems listed above unless someone else already is.
Look in the ooc thread.
I had them on my person however now have distributed them per Hoid's instructions.

Alas my sweet blooded friend.
The key at your feet,
True North most discreet.
Keep sealed and fast Old Oak’s sword.
The remainder of the book is blank.
(( Added to Hoid’s inventory as - Diary ))
Is the second book a book of the Treefather??
Seems very reasonable to me.
Religion :19 if needed
If so, we should ask Olar and Ullar if this means anything to them.
Erbert examined the book. “The alphabet is Elvish. But, it is written so no words are formed. Random letters.”
Code/cypher?
