Xymox checks both hand crossbows with a practiced flick, then steps back from the doorway, eyes sharp on the chamber within.
“I’ll cover you from afar—just don’t let the shadows steal your thunder, Sir Chadwick. Let me know if you prefer a more effective Bardic Inspiration, my friend."
Following the others forward, Trolkarl pauses beside Starker
Well done, Starker. Once again, you've done what none of us could- found the way forward. Your pain, your honesty... they broke Illiandal's lock. He smirks and shakes his head ... and I don't think Kragen could ever....what was it? 'Risk rending the multiverse'? Far too high-strung for that sort of thing. Well... we are all to be fair. A moment of silence passes, and Trolkarl places his hand on Starker's shoulder You walk a dangerous path. But you don't walk it alone. Remember that, friend.
Then to Chadwick Consider tapping your polearm hilt as you advance. Illiandal seems to have a thing for traps. We may not have seen the end of them yet.
Chadwick has entered the room, avoiding death. Kragen peers into the room from the door with his fashion goggles, avoiding death. The rest of you are arrayed behind them, also avoiding death. The ropey flames writhing through the floor pulse in time with the skull on the wall. All is quiet.
Kragen, relieved that using the Eyes of the Eagle has prevented death, has a new appreciation for their capabilities. With renewed confidence, enters the room behind Chadwick, confident that any further danger will be diffused with these magical constructs!
Starker follows in Chadwick’s footsteps (and Kragen’s if those arent on the wall or ceiling).
He reflects on the box and the gem. Was there anything else in the box? Did the depth of the box on the inside roughly correspond to the depth on the outside? Does is seem likely/possible that the box and/or gem are part of the lich’s recovery back up system?
The box and interior and exterior appeared to be appropriately matched. Nothing else in the box. Unlikely this has anything directly to do with a lich.
The hallway turns to the left and continues a short distance. At the end of the hall is a stairwell leading upwards into darkness. A chilling breeze gently drifts down the stairs with wisps fog trailing down the stairs and pooling at the base of the steps. There is an arch over the entrance of the stairs that has several gems set into it and runes engraved into the stone.
Please put your marching order together on Owlbear. Place Yartol where you want him.
Chadwick casts light with the driftglobe, then tosses a silver piece through the arch. If nothing happens "Starker can you decipher what these runes say? You know, like death to all who pass through or other creepy stuff like that?"
He is also on watch in case the noise brings any of the residents.
Starker:”The runes suggest the presence of a ward or a shield. Passing might cause an intersting response. I suggest some of us, at least, be at some distance before any of us try to pass.”

Kragen nods to Chadwick and chuckles as he lets him enter the passage.
”same murder holes those accursed flaming skulls can from earlier, beware.”
”we should probably gather the others and get into marching formation.”
Kragen gathers the others by signaling to them to follow, in their various locations.

Starker puts the gem in his backpack.
The hall exiting the room has a left turn at its end. The floor, walls and ceiling are the same.

arcana 10
investigation 26
(( At least one of those rolls IS needed. Both is better. ))
The runes appear to be arcane glyphs pertaining to Abjuration school of magic.
